Class 07 Diesel

Having fixed the air tank to the correct location and ensure it was no longer fouling the oil pump crank and then 3 hours of running in, it is now fine.

Taking the body apart on the extra pipes and bits version, was ok but you had to pay attention. Putting it back was a hell of a challenge. One of the white pipes popped off as did the handrail next to it. I can see why some shops say "no thanks" to fitting DCC! All of these details are metal though. Having got it all back together, the model is fine.

Those going for plain DCC, you need a very small 6 pin chip. Sound, the only way is hard wiring I'm afraid (or cutting a hole for the chip wires to go into the cab with the chip - which should look great).

Here is a pick with those other former Southampton dock shunters:

Very nice; the setting is too. I have to admit that the thought of three generations of Southampton dock shunters appealed to me greatly.

One of the more complex productions, I am proud to present my review of the Dapol B4 0-4-0 and Heljan 07 0-6-0 diesel shunter, however I have attempted to build in a short history of Southampton docks and some of the other locomotives based there.

Have to say this was a delightful film to work on and I really hope the result is popular.

Thanks for watching.

I fitted a CT Elektronik DCX74zD decoder, set it all up the way I wanted it on the programming track, then, using Decoder Pro (JMRI), it was a simple task to tick two checkboxes to enable the lights at both ends regardless of direction. It now works as desired.

Thank you for this all done now works fine

Only thing is decoder pro did not recognise it was a gaugemaster dcc23 but as a dcc25 instead

I'm sure the CVs involved would be the same for both decoder types. The main thing is, it worked.

Keep an eye open for Decoder Pro updates; the newer decoders may appear in that. I had the same thing with the CT Elektronik decoder where Decoder Pro recognised it as a function-only version. However, the correct type was available in the list of decoders, so I was able to manually change it to the DCX74z.

Obviously it's horses for courses when expecting dealers to provide more specialist services such as fitting sound chips especially where a little thought and experience are required.

I now have my green Heljan 07 fully sound fitted and working a treat as seen here :

courtesy of Wickness Models. Thank you Douglas. Excellent Service - All usual disclaimers just a satisfied customer.

Well sorry to disappoint you but sound fitted it may be... Its not an 07 !! I work with an 07 at Eastleigh Works every day and well this is some Hydraulic sounding thing !!

Just of interest, how long has this 07 been at Eastleigh now and has she ever left the site at any time.

I bet they wish she was dual braked but the dual braked ones don't have much space left in them to do any work

One small point I have noticed when getting my HNRC one is that it wasn't in a Hattons/Heljan limited box like the 14's (small point)

Didn’t always look so good..

Looking through my old train spotting books, all the way back to 1979 it was listed as a mobile generator under departmental stock at Eastleigh works, with number 2991.

Here’s a picture of it away from Eastleigh, but only just... (in Southampton yard) in 2002

And a bit further.. Swanage Railway gala.

Hi Lineside, nice first hand feedback, is there any sound files out there you have heard that you consider the most accurate? Would be good to know for future reference.

Class 07 blue tops and non tops exhaust pipes looking at photos of the real thing it appears that

All baring 07007 that’s at Eastleigh works had light grey exhaust pipes not blue as the model though if your modelling 07007 it’s is blue. Nothing a drop of light grey paint won’t put right. Mike

That flickr picture is in Eastleigh works at the back of the diesel test house . Once withdrawn she hasn't been far at all and was never a Tops registered loco although that is down to its owner. It only carried 2991 in BR ownership.

Decoder in and the cab would not resit right down on my HNRC one; resolved by loosening the rear bonnet (two screws at the opposite end to those you undo to remove the front bonnet) which gave enough play for the cab to position itself right. I take it there is nothing in the supplied detail pack for this version.

Some advice to those wishing to install DCC decoders, the Hattons 6-pin decoder is a couple of milimetres too long. I have had to fit a Guagemaster DCC23 decoder. There is enough room in the tray for the larger decoder but there is a pair of lighting wires that crosses the decoder bay and these are too short to reconnect once the Hattons decoder is in place.

Sorry to correct you but I have just fitted a Hattons 6 pin decoder and it went in without any problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

My Peakstone beast was waiting for me when I got in from work this afternoon.

runs beautifully through Peco live and dead frogs.

Lovely little thing! All it needs now is a liberal coat of limestone gunk and a ragged tarpaulin over the radiator as it had when I last saw it!

Oh, and a driver of course.

Has anyone converted one of these to EM (or P4) yet?

Please tell me it was so easy that even a cack handed oaf like me can have it done in the blink of an eye..

I think the driving wheels are more or less the same as those used on the 03 shunter, so you might be able to get away with using the appropriate AGW wheels.

I haven't, but Pete Johnson over at http://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/model_omwb145.html has, simply by putting the existing wheels on longer axles. It may be possible (as it was with the class 14) simply to ease the wheels out on the axles - the flanges are happy enough with EM track.

Got my peakstone yellow 07001 today, had to glue some handrails and a horn back on but it's a superb model. But the running is really poor, lumpy and wonky wheels causing the whole thing to do a bit of a dance, also the little connecting rod keeps falling off. Anyone else have running issues? Local shop only got me the one, so I'm guessing I'll have to get in touch with Heljan..

Check the lubricator is not hitting the air tanks. Mine was, once I removed and correctly refitted it, it ran very smoothly.

I bought one of these on Friday, a BR green one.  Is it my faulty perception, or is it the wrong shade of green?  The model appears to me to be BR standard loco green.  As built, the colour used on the 07 was didtinctly lighter and more like the old SR malachite green.
What is the opinion of the hive mind on this?
At the moment I'm seriously considering returning it.
