That looks very nice, Ron. I will need two more boxes in due course and this "Cookham" box will add a bit of variety, being gable ended rather than hipped roof. I was going to cut and shut a couple of the small Ratio boxes but I might well get one of these instead. Thanks.
RMweb Premium Popular Post St Enodoc Posted March 20, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 20, 2021 Despite the weather, which has seen all-time record river levels in the north of the state and the Warragamba Dam spilling for the first time in about thirty years, seven of the team including myself took duty this afternoon. That was enough for two yardmasters, four drivers and a combined signalman/Fat Controller (me). We were all very rusty at first but gradually got back into the swing. I must say that it was hard work at Porthmellyn Road signal box with the new Line Clear system and all the signals to work now. However, we did get through 26 trains in two hours, which is actually the same as at our very first session just four years ago. Afternoon tea was enhanced by one of Veronica's chocolate marble cakes, after which the chaps went their separate ways looking forward (I think) to moving into uncharted waters in May when Friday midnight passes and we move on to Saturday's trains. Oh, and the Power Pro system behaved perfectly all day. 17

Quote Rob McKenna is an ordinary lorry driver who can never get away from rain, and he has a log-book showing that it has rained on him every day, anywhere that he has ever been, to prove it. He is because of this rather grouchy and resigned to never seeing the sun; he notes it even rained when he went abroad. He was described by the scientific community as a "Quasi Supernormal Incremental Precipitation Inducer". https://hitchhikers.fandom.com/wiki/Rob_McKenna

RMweb Premium Popular Post St Enodoc Posted March 26, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 26, 2021 One thing I didn't mention about Saturday's running session was that towards the end of the afternoon the Next Train display froze a couple of times. The rather ancient laptop that drives it seemed a bit warm to the touch, so I decided that it was probably Donalded and it was time to replace it. To cut a long story short, Veronica suggested I buy a factory-refurbished machine, so I ordered one, for just over $200, which arrived today. Surprisingly for me, I got it going without too much difficulty, so I took it out to the railway room. Bother! The display monitor needs a VGA input and there is no VGA port on the new laptop! That means a trip to Jaycar (other electronics/computer shops are available) to buy an adaptor. Aside from that, I've tidied up the layout after the running session and got everything in its place ready for train 135, the 1920 (Friday) Penzance to Plymouth ordinary passenger. It's a mixed formation of six coaches with 5985 "Mostyn Hall" of Truro shed up front. Over the weekend I might dismantle the two St Enodoc station baseboards to start rewiring them and fitting new point motors with the boards propped up on their sides. 23
RMweb Premium Popular Post St Enodoc Posted March 27, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2021 (edited) I picked up a VGA/HDMI adaptor this morning and installed it after lunch. After some to-ing and fro-ing trying to get the laptop to recognise the presence of the external monitor, Veronica came out and gave it a good talking to, following which it behaved itself perfectly (just like me...). Here it is, showing train 135. I then removed the first of the St Enodoc station boards (the old board 4) and clamped it to the workbench. I blacked out all the old identification information, except for a couple of places where it's still relevant, and then marked which of the remaining droppers were of which polarity. When I built the old layout I didn't isolate every point individually but kept the "middle" rails connected right through all the points in a ladder, two in this case - I don't know why I did that but I'm not going to try to isolate more rails now. I just need to make sure the right green wires are connected to the right point motors. This will be the only place this happens as all the other points are in different places from before, so I can isolate them as I lay them. Finally I fitted two Cobalt iP Analogue motors. The one on the left has a 90 degree adaptor, as there isn't quite enough room for a normal installation between the point and the baseboard bracing on one side or between the point and where a signal has to go on the other. The point on the right has plenty of room though. Tomorrow I might start on some feeders and/or fitting choc blocks for the point and uncoupler connections. Dinner time now, then I'll watch the NSW Waratahs get stuffed (probably) by the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby AU. Things are moving in the direction of ever-smaller connectors. My latest laptop only has USB-C connectors, even for the monitor connectors - they work perfectly, but it took a set of new cables & adaptors when I first got the machine. The Raspberry Pi400 has a pair of HDMI connectors, but even there, the USB-C connector has made an appearance. Yours, Mike. 1
