Dapol 08

Kickstart

Recommended Posts

08202 certainly was blue with red rods in 1979: https://flic.kr/p/9sNi3y Roof colour is uncertain, though.

Fast-forward a few years and it has yellow rods, blue roof and also the bonnet-end buffers have been replaced with Oleos

1985  https://flic.kr/p/HQKr85

1988  https://flic.kr/p/9LQJK1

I'm looking forward to my 08202 thudding onto the doormat and am sorely tempted to add a green/wasps to my order with Tower which can then be green/TOPS'd.

Anyone know if the later bonnet doors/cab doors style will follow at some future date, because a 13 master/slave pair is mightily tempting!

Just catching up on this thread and spotted the thing about the black rad. grill surround. This link had been posted but I think that some people may have missed it or chose to ignore it as it would not suite there cause.

Black rad. grill surround on D3274. Also black cab roof and at the front a blue buffer beam.

Interesting find. Trick of the light I think but the chevrons almost look blue (albeit very dirty) as well!

A lot of York based 08 Black shunters appear to be "Getting Lost" in the W.R. - :)

Well I am going to run the early black BR version (I beleive from York) on my future GWR branch and be damned!

It must have got lost  :derisive:

Today, I received from Digitrains my Zimo MX644D sound decoder c/w ZS08A Class 08 Activedrive sound file. I installed a speaker wire with a two pin plug and am currently using a Digitrains ABS-229-RC speaker. These are currently installed in 13240 and I have to say the combination, IMHO, is exceedingly good.

I have ordered from Paul Chetter a second Zimo MX644D sound decoder c/w his Class 08 Protodrive sound file and hope to have this shortly. I will be using a Digitrains supplied ZIMO LS40x22x09 twin speaker with this as recommended by Paul. The speaker is a perfect fit behind the Clas 08's radiator grill.

All of which now means I shall be purchasing another Dapol 08. The combination of this excellent model and terrific sound makes the purchase of another 08 a no brainer. The problem is whether to get a green one or a blue pre-TOPS one.

The usual disclaimer applies.

Paul's Chetter's version fitted to my mine highly recommended as it has more sounds and some extra sounds you can swap about!!!

For info had a look at Dapol sound listing and I decieded to go down independent sound supplier route as it was much cheaper (circa £70 cheaper than Dapol sound fitted version) and Dapol list did appear to be lacking some important sounds compared to other independent supplier offerings. Still be good though whatever sound version chosen.

Martyn,

it's just a loose set of instanter coupling that have been thrown on the coupling hook to help shunting. long for unfitted and short for fitted, the shunter would still have to between to couple up the vac. pipe though.

Paul,

I somehow don't think the " short for fitted " would of beeen used a lot, not with their top speed : )

Getting back on track, after a bit of research I settled on turning mine into 08141 (before it got the Tinsley painters embellishments in the form of the Manvers name) as I have a few photos of her and I was wondering if any of you know what could have caused such heavy black oil staining? Also on the two doors (one with the name and on at the side of it) what could have caused such a strange circular mark? (I'm pondering how to recreate the mark)

Looks like the shadow from below a transfer (say blue circle) and the body side colour has faded.

OzzyO.

PS. to do the same just paint the body in the colour that you want, then mask off the circle and then weather the body down and then remove the circle.

I would like to know which of these TOPS-era/long bonnet hinge 08s were actually allocated to the Western Region; Gloucester, Bristol, Newport areas? I have done a google search of RMweb but not found anything really - must be me?!? thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction!!

Well I'm not sure what I've ordered as after reading this thread part number 7D-008-002 was produced as D3045 and 08529 was never produced.

Has anyone else ordered one of these from Modellers Mecca?

Yes, I ordered one, as I understand it it was supposed to be 08529 but Dapol changed it to D3045 between announcement and delivery. Modellers Mecca web site had the original details but the actual model is D3045. Mine is in the post and it was confirmed as D3045 so I think that is what you should be getting.

I've been doing a similar exercise. My pre-TOPs one will be Bath road based ca 1970, favourite candidate is D3002, eventually sold to Foster Yeoman

This is a cracker of a website for all BR allocation history

Yes and excellent starting point. But as we discussed earlier the allocations are incomplete for example for 13240. In that case it is condemned from a depot that there is no mention it was allocated to.

I contacted Modellers Mecca and they confirmed what you have just said, so I cancelled the order as it hadn't been posted.

I have now ordered 08202 from Peters Spares and a Parkside Dundas Grampus wagon kit, that should keep me busy :locomotive:

Thanks Paul, I know the BRdatabase site has errors, for example from memory I recall 08 005 spent some time at Chester, but as you say a good starting point. Thanks for the link to the Shed by Shed books, I've just ordered numbers 7 and 8 covering the 1970s.

Just a quick question - as a 2mm modeller, a Dapol 7mm 08 is now obviously at the top of my Xmas list (!!), but I was wondering if it's possible to easily remove the ladders but leave the mounting points intact?

The release closest to the prototype I'd like to model (08102 (ex-D3167) - an old Lincoln stalwart) appears to be 7D-008-002 D3045 (or the unnumbered version), but for the period I have in mind, the ladders have to go...

Cheers,
Kevin
