Did the covers for expansion link. This was in the kit. I also made the long splasher type thing. Not quite sure what it is for as the wheels seem to be clear of the footplate, but it is there now.

I was checking through the parts as I need to make as I wanted to see how much material to cut out. I Know I did not have the Maunsell smokebox door. But this is a bit small for this loco. Might fit a M7.

Next parts to make, The cab sides these will replace ones that are wrong. The reversing levers, not supplied. The cab roof as I am sure the one in the kit will not fit now the cab specticle is the right shape.

I am sure there will be more.

A little more done, this time to the cab. The new sides were made they look a lot different to the originals.

Spectacles were added to the front, I still need to fill in holes at the bottom. The cab cut out beading was added, along with rivets near the bottom. I was hoping toget it assembled but the engineer turned up with the calculations to keep the workshop upstiers.

I want to get the body basics done as I think this will get the mojo going to get back to the fiddly bits

Well, more progress, I am sure I saw a snail pass me today.

More work on the cab, the floor and seats are in, not as designed but in. No pictures as I forgot.

The cab roof was next, this took sometime as it was scratch built, as the one supplied is to short as soon as you make itthe right shape. I jused L and T sections on the roof these were very carefully put the the rollers to curve. It looks an ood shape in the photo, but It is OK in real life.

post-13601-0-54436300-1462404601_thumb.jpg

I have tacked everything in place to check their fit and the fit of other parts as we progress. Castings are just place to give me help in keeping the mojo happy.

post-13601-0-49119600-1462404622_thumb.jpg

I then turned to the tender top. I think it is meant to put a radiused corner each end of the sides, an area is half etch to aid making the curve, and then the front and rear fit between. So we do the first side to see how it all goes. This is where the mojo climbed onto the top of the cupboard, just out of reach.

This is where you find the front and rear are full width. The front actually sits behind the curve quite nicely, the platform will need to altered slightly but is far easier to do than make the front the right width. Next you find the side is the right length without putting a curve on the end.

post-13601-0-76570200-1462404659_thumb.jpg

Now the mojo has fallen down the back of the cupboard completely out of reach. I carefully straighten the rear curve. I tack the four parts to the footplate to see the fits and to see what I can do.

I found some suitable tube, cut it to height and solder inside the tender, Thenit was easy to shape the outside to the right profile. I will need to sort out the curve to the top but thats for another day. It's not good having to many exciting things happen in one.

Here you can both sides one done the other still co be completed.

Things that will need sorting in the future found today. Coal dividing plate remade and moved forward. Slot for fixing is behind the coal plates. Tender top needs adjusting so the self trimming is the right shape, probably new sides to the coal space. The smoke deflectors are too long and too tall, to fit the loco I have built.

Despite all the problems Peter you are making a right fist of that. Keep going!

Thanks. I am actually enjoying the challenge must need my lumps reading.

All the best

Sandy

This isn't an Agenoria kit by any chance is it Pete? ;-p

All the best

I wish it was. I think William designed this to cover every southern loco. You pick your prototype select the parts that may fit. Then make the rest.

Sounds like the old SEF Maunsell Mogul kit in 4mm. Designed to produce every variety...badly!

Can anyone recommend a 7mm kit for a N Class?

Hi 2ManySpams

DA does an N class, but to order only.  I was chatting with him last week and he doesn't hold stock any more (and hasn't for some time!)

I wonder which is the better kit....?

ACE: http://www.a4ace.supanet.com/kits_Maunsell.html

DA: http://www.locomotivekits.com/html/d816.html

Jesting aside, is it worth ordering a DA kit to protect against later non-availability?

I have the ACE version. (My first 7mm loco kit; oh dear!) I didn't mention it because ...........!!!!! (With much effort it will make a reasonable representation and I will go back to it someday)

DA's version any time! (Last week I collected a Stanier 2 Cyl 2-6-4t kit of his, hence the opportunity to have a long chat)

Regards, Deano

I have had some more success with the tender.

I started off by forming the radiused corners for the flares. I made three three as the first two did not match. They took a bit of fiddling butfar better than makingthemfrom brass fingers and solder. I also cut a fairly large hole in the footplate hopefully this will stop the tinny noise when running if not it gives access to fill it with foam.

I then fitted the tender top and the side raives. The top fitted quite well. but the side were poor. I decided it would be quicker to fill the gap than make new ones. Also they were both etched the same instead of a left and right. I still need to do a bit of serious cleaning up to be done. I feel another email to William is on the way.

Most of theetched parts for the front have been fitted. There are a few details I want to add that are not in the kit. I am not quite sure what William's idea was. there were two etched sand boxes as I have used. He also supplies cast ones that could be soldered to the footplate, which would be fine but the footlate is etched to take the full height etched ones.

I quick cheack to find out how things line up. It seems to me to be looking something like it should.

I would like to get the last of the main parts on the loco and tender finished just to leaving the detail work to be done after I have finished the getting the chassis running.

Back to the frames. I did add the coal plate and shovelling plate to the tender no photos as yet.

I sorted out the mounting for the expansion link.. I made two new ones from scrap. This is what I had to start with the etched beading will be replaced as there is no way it will fit.

post-13601-0-35415500-1463012168_thumb.jpg

When I had made the extra two I soldered them to two strips the wider one is for fixing to the frames the thin one will be removed after they are soldered to the motion bracket.

post-13601-0-05668100-1463012188_thumb.jpg

It took quite a bit of frame modification to make it fit at the right level. Hopefullynext sesion I will be able to fix the assembly to the frames. I think I will need to rienforce the join to the motion bracket. It is quite a long assembly.

It looks the part. I can now start the assembly of valve gear. The expansion link will be suspended on a screw between the frame which will make removal easier.

A little closer tothe end. Progress seems very slow at the moment, I think I spend too much time sorting the builders problems.

I finished the expansion link supports by adding the fixings and solder it all to the motion bracket.

Next up I connected the connecting rods to the cross headssorted out the reverse crankpins for both the centre and front drivers. At least with SR locos there is less of a clearence issue as the front pin only has to miss the connecting rod not the cross head.

I also made a start with the valve gear assembly. I am doing it one peice at a time, and in pairs. It is not unknown for me to make to lefts or rights rather than one of each. The valve gear will disconnect from the cross head and unscrew from the return crank. Hopefully it will completed tomorrow and tested with the motor etc.
