David Todd
Question one What were Time Team doing standing on the concrete section was it the start of trench one? Question two Yes what are those kinks in the conductor rail ? Thanks for the update and what is that cleared area behind the line as it bends towards Priory/ 1. The management team, obviously had finished their morning office meeting. Started their tour of the various job sites. So,they were not just standing on the concrete section,a whole site tour was conducted. 2. Been there a couple of weeks now, those kinks. Presume, tracked vehicle. 3. Presume, you mean, the very top of the photo, with the mounds of spoil/stone. The whole area was the Hoverport, where the Hovercraft landed ,loaded and discharged. It is all due for redevelopment very soon. The Prince of Wales pier, closed to the public, ion the 4th January 16. The long concrete fencing panels at the top of the picture,is the windbreak for the PoW pier. Edited February 5, 2016 by David Todd
Fat Controller
Question one What were Time Team doing standing on the concrete section was it the start of trench one? Question two Yes what are those kinks in the conductor rail ? Thanks for the update and what is that cleared area behind the line as it bends towards Priory/ If you mean the area to the right of the line as it curves towards Dover Priory, then from right to left you had: Dover Town Yard. The line from Folkestone to Dover Western Docks The Military Platform (originally intended for disembarking troops and horses for the garrison on the Western Heights, latterly used for unloading trains of cars) An area which has been a lorry park for as long as I can recall. Then, after the line towards Dover Priory, was Bulwark St yard, most recently used for an oil terminal, and a loading point for water tank wagons during droughts.
David Todd
To finish of today's photo's, as I ran out of time, before the school run earlier. This is the last update, for today. David Todd
In the following photos I shew the concrete sections in the slope of the cliff above the down line, Adjacent to the tunnel mouths. Done, many years ago.
David Todd
Sometime today, I will take the bus,and get off a few stops early. At the stop,on the A20. roadoverbridge ,close to the old Harbour Station,(now privately owned,Grade ll listed). The current owner,is rebuilding to original plans, the northern part of the station. I then cross to "the viaduct", that takes the road to the Western Docks. Once on this bridge, that the up and down lines,on the curve, pass under, I will have a clear view, Of those newly installed buffer stops. Here,is where I will take the photo from. Turning,180.degrees, this shews Harbour Station, and the roadoverbridge of The A20,where the bus stop is. The up and down lines, carry on into the Harbour Tunnel, under the Western Heights and exit into Dover Priory Station. Harbour tunnel portal, south, beneath the Western Heights.
David Todd
Those to "towers",in this photo, are the Dover Ready mixed concrete Center . Am sure the project team, may require, a couple of Lorry loads, sometime soon. Just ask for best price of the day or take a look at the Futures Markets. Delivery free,a short trip across the tracks.
David Todd
I took this photo, awhile back, from behind the Seawall on the beach. Obviously , you are not allowed on the beach at present, while this major project is ongoing. Exiting the 10 chain curve, on the the straight leading up to Shakey Tunnel, you can see,a non-descript,half build red brick wall . Most would not give it a second glance. But,it is the remains of an old single track engine shed, built along with Town Station, in 18,blonkety,blonk.

David Todd
Further up from the brick wall, on the entry to the 10 chain curve, cut into the Archcliffe is this. You may think,a tunnel ? No,it is at the wrong angle, for a rail tunnel. Bricked support for the cliff ? No.
David Todd
In the above photo, where the old rail and bags are, now stands, ThE Network Rail site offices, for the present project.
David Todd
This, is a public postcard, taken in the 1980s,I think. It shews, the area,of the WesternDocks and the eastern part of the Dover Town Yard, close to the beach. You can clearly see, where I will be,on the viaduct,at the start of my visit today.
bigherb
Further up from the brick wall, on the entry to the 10 chain curve, cut into the Archcliffe is this. You may think,a tunnel ? No,it is at the wrong angle, for a rail tunnel. Bricked support for the cliff ? No. Would that not have been part of Aycliffe fort? Similar construction to this.
David Todd
A very nice try, bigherb, But, if you take a look at this map of the area of Dover Town Station published in 1862. In the bottom right corner, you can locate the single track engine shed and A turntable ,where it once stood,in that brick arch, shewn in my previous photo. Now,I do have permission of the publisher, Middleton Press, to reproduce this. Taken from, Ashford to Dover book, by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith. One of three books, written of the area. 1. Ashford to Dover. 2. Faversham to Dover. 3. Dover to Ramsgate . It may well be to the advantage of the Project Team, to get hold of these books, In case they encounter, another unforeseen project in the area. Ok, enough writing am out for the day, now.

David Todd
Hmm, The signage has been printed the wrong way around, it is also,on the wrong side of the fence, don't you think ?
