Do I Need to exchange any currency before I head for the border?

Pourcee

Fear not, you will be travelling with Border Reivers and we respect neither the English nor the Scottish borders...however in respect of HM representatives in both countries  the car is taxed and tested...

Subject to the printers delivering on their promises, Glasgow will also be the launch of my father's new book.

attachicon.gifCover_Dingwall Skye compress copy.jpg

The Dingwall & Skye Railway - a pictorial record of the line to Kyle of Lochalsh, by Peter Tatlow ISBN 978 1906 537463 @ £27.95  by Crecy Publishing Ltd.

This does not seek to be a particularly heavy historical tour (Rails to Kyle of Lochalsh does this) but does investigate a few of the operational issues with the line and how it shaped this part of the western highlands.  It is also a pictorial review of the line and is packed with photographs but, best of all for me, it includes a lot of drawings of the features along the line, structural, architectural and lineside.

To confirm this book has been published in time to be launched at this weekend's Glasgow show.

So gather your pennies.........

Daft question coming up here.......

Anyone know when the O gauge Kyle layout first appeared at the McLellan Galleries?

I'm trying to work out how close to the first show my mum first took me, lol!

I got my first train set in 65 and mum took me a couple of years later, and thereafter every year until I started going on my own. After seeing the Kyle layout, I was enthralled to see a finescale model of somewhere I knew! I went home and lifted and relaid my triang super4 6x4 layout into a very very vague representation of a Kyle!

I've been most years since and I'm looking forward to this years show as always.

Angus

Angus,

I think the attached scan of a page from the Railway Modeller in 1971 will answer your question. Sorry the image is slightly cropped.

Richard Chown brought Kyle to the 1971 show in the McLellan Galleries and is at the show again this year with his 1974 layout Castle Rackrent.

I hope you enjoy the show.

Home at nine tonight and the show is looking good.

All layouts built and waiting on the crowds tomorrow.

Had a wee look at Blackbill on the way out..what a beautiful layout ..but no we are not envious and even although I had the place to myself I resisted the temptation to sabotage yer electrics!

The Irish Tram set up also caught my aye and looks superb..plus many others too.

Should be a great show.

Dave.

Hi everyone,

Made it to the Glasgow show for the first time in three years (work sometimes gets in the way at this time of the year).

Overall impressions:

Some mixed thoughts on a few of the layouts: some looked great in terms of scenics, track, and design but ran straight out-of-the-box older models.

Personal Highlights:

Great entertainment from the Hornby Dublo, and Tri-ang displays - surprising how relaxing it is to watch a 3-rail A4 and three Pullmans run round a small oval at a scale 180mph.  Great folk on these stands, and more than happy to share their joy and nostalgia.

Ian Futers was good to see with his latest take on one of his older ideas.  Great conversation about inspiration, and why three points on a layout.  I'm now tempted to try out one or two of his ideas.

Whispering Hollow: small, simple, yet very effective.  In the dark to show off lighting (and not just on the trains).  Made sound-fitted h0 US outline very attractive.

Irish Trams (O'Connel Street):  if you go along watch out for the buses and the cyclist!  Even better in the flesh than in print.

Overall, its worth going along if you have the time.

Regards,

Alex.

All layouts built and waiting on the crowds tomorrow.

That was the quietest Friday I have ever seen

I bought the Advance ticket this year, after visiting a few years ago and waiting nearly one hour to get in

I arrived at 10:00 and walked past about 50 people, then straight in

Walked anti-clockwise around the permiter and managed to get almost two thirds before meeting people coming the other way; never had that before

Even when general opening occured there was still loads of room to walk around

Sadly had to leave at 12:45

Most layouts were running

However, gremlins had afflicated a few

My local club (Cumbernauld) seemed to be the worst, with derailments and dodgy wiring

Moray also had derailment issues, but some of that appeared to be due to the operators being unfamiliar with the layout!

A credit to the organisers for producing an excellent show, in my opinion the best for years.

Plenty of variety in the layouts, with something for everyone. O'Connell Street was wonderful, with not a train in sight, but so much to admire upon it. And "World's End" is a layout I admire for the wonderful scenic modelling. Law Junction will always be N gauge at its' best, with the realism of the scale of the area, plus the Revolution Trains "Pendolino" on display on Saturday. And there were plenty of others to keep me entertained for the several hours I was there.

I also felt the balance of traders was better, with a greater variety of what was available than in previous years.

Also good to see displays/samples of many models that have yet to be released. The Dapol ScotRail 68 is in the display cabinet immediately inside the entrance, Oxford Rail have samples on of their newly announced items on their stand (B51), plus the usual Bachmann and Hornby displays.

A day well spent. Thank you.

Yes great show. Will be heading back tomorrow because there is so much to see. Of the layouts there I thought Elgin Model Railway club stole it. A nice big roundy roundy with something always on the move. It's the type of layout I like with stock you don't normally see North of the border. I particularly enjoyed the Beyer Garrett, first timeI'd seen one in the flesh and the prototype Deltic. A bit of humour too with the Sir Fred Goodwin private owner wagon, financial advisor and pensions specialist!

Cumbernauld did seem to have problems both times I passed along with Aberdeen. Fine big layout , but not much running. Controlled by iPads I'm sure it's all very gee whiz . Can't see the point of the big telly when Mk1 eyeball is good enough to see what's in fiddle yard. Seemed to be having trouble getting anything round inner circuit . Some good steam sounds though and loved the clickety clack of a large train on the move.

Inverboyndie was excellent. Some fine shunting of coaches going on. Worlds end , of course ,had stunning scenery.

Triang railways and Hornby Dublo very nostalgic and as mentioned above , the guys were very pleasant.

Some bargains to be had if you fancied it. Hornby teaks @£25 , a Railroad Hunt @£30 on the Locomotion stand. Seemed a lot more second hand than previous years, although noted Pastimes were surprisingly absent. Some prices being charged for second hand were pretty steep. Not much new to see on Bachmann stand and didn't see any new models on Hornby stand. Maybe it's me , but it seems symptomatic of Hornby marketing that the inside cover of the guide in headlines says Claim your free Hornby wagon, Model Rail Givaway. There's even a voucher to exchange. However in quite small print in the middle it says it's for the first 10 people only! Just seemed shoddy to me and totally irrelevant if you are visiting on day 2 or 3 .

Well organised, no queuing but seemed just a busy as previous years .Looking forward to the return visit, although I'll be taking the train to avoid £8 parking. Yes I know it's the SECC........

Forgot to mention Oxford Railways did have a mock up of Deans Goods on their stand.

As always really enjoyed my trip to Glasgow today.

Enjoyed seeing some layouts which were new to me and good to see some others I never tire of seeing.

Spoke to Bachmann and was told the large logo 47s are probably on the boat!

I can see one of those becoming '593 circa 1986-7.
