Your quite right Sarah,

It is at the Brighton Museum, the Toy and Model museum have it listed in their index, but upon actually reading the entry it says that it is only listed due to it's historical importance to Brighton, and not the fact that it is actually there.

As a point of interest I note from the article that the model was actually started in the 1880's!! and took 13 years to complete!

Gary,

13 years!  There is hope for us all then.

Oak Hill's Refurbishment - Day 6

Loco Yard planning

Day 5 was once again a total write off with nothing happening.

Today I have placed the buildings back in the loco yard, and I am making some plans as to what to do next.

I have decided that with the coal stage being a large brick based structure I should re-do the platform in the same way as the station platform using black gloss and chinchilla dust, however I don't have anything to wash the brush with so I'll have to get some white spirit before I do that.

I have also decided that now is the time to get on with making the changes to the shed that have always been planned. The idea is to try and make it look more like Bognor shed as this is the closest LBSCR prototype to the Wills kit, the first thing to do will be to change the ventilators on the top.

Other than that the soldering needs cleaning up, and some ballast needs replacing. Although the layout is definitely better already!

Hi Gary.

The vents on Bognor shed do look a lot like the Tri-ang/ Hornby R.146 Modern Engine Shed vents!

So nothing else has happened in the refurb yet. However I still have some inconsistent running issues, I think these may be because of the suitcase connectors I have used under the layout, so I will get under and start soldering the connections later on today.

There are 2 things I have been doing recently instead of working on the layout, the first of these is over the last few days I have re-read this topic start to finish. I have been inspired by some things people have said in the past and have a few projects lined up as a result, and I was also reminded by how good the layout used to run when I came across the first videos I did of the layout, my aim is to get back to that! These videos can be seen waaaaay back on page 3 in post 53

The other thing I have done is a visit to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway on Saturday as they had a gala with all 3 Island locos running! This trip included my first trip in a Stroudley carriage, and it was pulled by a terrier!!!  The trip was with Alex (AVS1998) and Linny (SkinnyLinny) and while there we briefly met up with Matt (BluebellModelRailway) All in all a good day was had. I will leave you with a few pictures I took, and Matt's video, because it was much better than mine!! (I appear in the video twice, and at least 3 other RMWeb pre-groupers appear once!)

Lovely atmospheric video, I think the folks on that line who do the carriage restoration are doing an excellent job, last time I was there I was getting on to a different carriage at every stop. Great contrast from steam in sun baked meadows, I got in a trip today, off to the Spa Valley, diesels in the rain! (Diesels because of fire risk, ho ho)

Yes it is, I wish I could take videos like that!!! I didn't even get that much video never mind that good! I was filming both times I appear in that one though!!

As for the layout I forgot just how many droppers Oak Hill has, this is about 2/3rds of the loco yard

.............................................................This might take a while

Well after 3 evenings work the dropper to bus wire connections have all been redone, no more suitcase clips everything is soldered, at each stage running has improved. I will test the layout in full tomorrow. Until then for those wondering just how many droppers Oak Hill has I present the removed clips.......................

I am glad that job is over, next on the list, new control panel and make all the point motors and signals work!

Well I have managed yet another lap around the sun!! So it seems like a good time to have a look at the state of play for Oak Hill's refurbishment!

The good news is the wiring under the layout has made a huge difference and the layout is now running better than it ever has!! I have also finished wiring the points to the newly built control panel, the signals still need doing, but some repair work is needed first!!

So I suppose you all want to see some actual progress?? Lets have a look then!

First lets have a look at the new control area of the layout:

and a close up of the control panel with the studs in for both point and signal operation:

post-22762-0-55553300-1534447575_thumb.jpg

When I was re-reading this thread I was reminded that some time ago I found some better trees for the station entrance road at the back of the layout, the thought being that the Railway Company planted these trees to line the road, So I went ahead and finally ordered them:

post-22762-0-50875200-1534447680_thumb.jpg

and in place on the layout, looking much better than what was there before!!

post-22762-0-84647800-1534447705_thumb.jpg

I have also taken delivery of my new kit that I commissioned Linny to design, the one shown in photos n their thread was the test build, and having it here just made me want it even more. It will be much better than the tattered card building that it is replacing!

post-22762-0-03698100-1534447819_thumb.jpg

and I suppose since we are working on the running of the layout I should really show some running!! The Oak Hill Preservation Society borrowed P Class number 323 "Bluebell" from the Bluebell Railway for it track testing, and was very happy with the performance!!

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed,

Thanks guys!!

The "bump" at 18 seconds was a blob of solder on top of the rail, followed immediately by the loco going into the frog of the point!! Being that the layout was made with set-track points there is a noticeable drop there, the solder has been cleaned up since the video was shot though!!

Good evening everyone!!

I've done some modelling again!!! I have been watching the time ticking down and thought I had best get on with the L Class!

So first things first I got the firebox cut shaped and added to the loco:

post-22762-0-45051300-1535570608_thumb.jpg

After that was done I wanted to get the boiler fittings looking better. So after finding appropriate parts, including a new bottom for the boiler, I removed the chimney and dome from the boiler:

post-22762-0-57911500-1535570788_thumb.jpg

and added the new ones! (from a "Great British Locomotives" model, can anyone tell which one?)

post-22762-0-47943400-1535570839_thumb.jpg

We now had something looking much more like the drawing:

post-22762-0-62456900-1535570916_thumb.jpg

post-22762-0-20153700-1535571012_thumb.jpg

With that done I also thought it was time to modify the smokebox door to look more like the L Class one, this involved moving the handrail down, shortening the hinges and replacing the dart with one I made:

post-22762-0-82824200-1535571138_thumb.jpg

I then started work on the smokebox saddle, this was done by making a few formers from brass, soldering them in place and then using filler to create the actual saddle:

post-22762-0-23648800-1535571382_thumb.jpg

and while the filler was out the boiler got a some where needed:

post-22762-0-35403300-1535571437_thumb.jpg

I then started adding more details such as the fronts of the frames, and the hatches on the tank sides:

post-22762-0-86746300-1535571580_thumb.jpg

This brings us up to date on the project, I have a boiler backhead ready to add, and am going to make the roof for the cab next, this will be removable. Then I need to modify the chassis as the loco currently sits to high, once that is done I think the end of the build will be in sight!!

10 weeks and 4 days to go!!!

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed,

Hi Gavin...

Looking rather good!

Boiler dome and Chimney...GBL....I was thinking Midland Compound...but the dome is green!

Remind me....was there a Schools class in the GBL Collection???

I know, I should know this, but memory is failing again! :)
