rogerzilla
It's interesting to see *any* new passenger locomotive in these days of multiple unit sets. I think they're quite striking, sort of jolie-laide. Wikipedia says one nickname for them is "Warskips" which presumably comes from the old Class 50 (and Class 42) names and the fact that they are only marginally less utiliarian in appearance than a Class 66 corrugated pig. RMweb Premium HillsideDepot Posted May 5, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) I think this is a first - 68011 (Chiltern livery) has gone to Bridgwater with the flask this morning double heading with 57003 which was on the front, so who knows which will lead on the return working. There is nothing showing on Real Time Trains yet for the return working, but I assume that is normal procedure for these trains. SWT442
A few Class 68 shots form the begining of the month. 68004 "Rapid" heads through Cheddington with 0Z?? Willesden Brent to Wolverton Works. 02.06.2016 68001 "Evolution" thunders down the Trent Valley with 6U76 Crewe Basford Hall to Mountsorrel. It's seen at Coton Lane, near Tamworth. 03.06.2016 With loaded return working, 68001 is seen at Catholme with 6U77 Mountsorrel to Crewe Basford Hall. 03.06.2016 Andy.
hmrspaul
I've finally managed to get a set of photos of 68004 laid up at York. Seems strange that they are limited to a pathetic 100mph. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/class68 Paul
RMweb Gold russ p Posted June 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 26, 2016 They are 100 mph because they are proper mixed traffic loco's. They could be regeared for 125mph but they would lose the ability to start heavy freight trains. With the current gearing the acceleration is phenomenal,so much infact that when starting light engine any unsecured drinks on the desk will soon become part of your clothes! Fat Controller
Any idea what the gross train weight for those loaded Mountsorrel workings is? It looks to be a lot for a single Bo-Bo.
RMweb Gold russ p Posted June 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 26, 2016 I can't remember exactly what it is, maybe about 2000t , they do manage alright with them though. They can't pull as much as a 66 but a 66 can't work a class 1 at 100mph
