Footboards deserve to be double thickness etch.

I take your point Miss Prism. This coach is to be added to a rake previously built, so will have to match up.

right oh, I've got the LNWR coach ask ready for cleaning and priming. The will be done tomorrow along with the 44xx tank (I hope, weather permitting).

Interior partitions made from scrap brass and also added some strengtheners to the side and ends. The roof is detachable and fits like a snuff box lid.

Here's the 44xx all ready for the off.  Happy that's now finished.  The next on the bench is the DJH A2/3 pacific. That will be interesting to build I think.

Weird how the first image has a blue tinge.

Spent yesterday going through the DJH A2/3 and sorting out the parts for the tender. Before I did that though all the brass etches required a lot of cleaning up as they were heavily tarnished and too many to and large to go into my sonic cleaner anyway.

So today made a start on the construction. All went well until I came to the coal shute. That took quite a while to get it good enough for me.  The chassis just fell together.

That's the tender almost competed, buffers & couplings to add.  So tomorrow I'll have to spend some time marking up, removing from the frets and prepping the many, many castings.

The tender went together fairly easily, as mentioned the coal Shute required some adjustments and the cover across the front of the tender had to be fettled for a good fit.

Ken.

A word of warning. There are a few problems that I encountered  with the DjH A1. I don't know if they have produced new masters for the valve guides but I can only describe  those in my kit as the product of the master maker's memory which wasn't very good. I ended up dumping them and carving new ones from the solid.  This is the result.

Arthur I agree with Jazz 60147 looks great expecially the three piece expansion link ..... was that scratch built or purchased. If the latter where from

Ive completed a DJH A1, A2 and A3 and in each case converted the supplied lostwax expansion casting into a three piece thereby allowing the valvegrear to be manually set  mid , forward or reverse.

It was a real pain in the B converting those castings. I still have another DJH pacific to build but not looking forward to converting another expansion link casting

Just in case anyone is wondering about the dome position , on its last overhaul 60116s A1 boiler was replaced with an ex A2 boiler variant and in this case the banjo dome is positioned further forward

Regards

Bob

Hi Bob,

The Three piece expansion link and the radius rod were both scratch built. I was particularly keen that the centre of the expansion link should pass through the radius rod. The brass casing over the big-end of the eccentric rod was also my addition.

I had a few other problems with this kit, The boiler and smokebox were separate units and differed in diameter by a full millimetre. a complaint to  DJH produced replacements which were no better than the first. I resorted to sawing along the bottom centre of the smokebox and prising it apart until the two were (more or less) the same.

If the valve guides on your model were those from the kit then I can only say that they are a vast improvement on those that I got.

Hello Arthur

I had a feeling you had scratch built the valvegear bits, they look excellent.  I particuarly like the bigend brass casing I just wish they were available on the market.

I choose the masochist option and used the existing expansion link lost wax castings that came with the kits

My method was to file back the inner sides of the expansion link castings  enough to provide enough room to fit a scratch built central support made from a scrap bit of etch.

With the radius rod then fitted onto the new SB central support and able slide up an down within it they were then slid into the reworked expansion link casting and carefully soldered into place

Its a realy pity that no one has produced an etch for the the expansion link. The ones that Martin Finney included in his LNER Pacific valve gear etches now Finney7 were superb

Regarding the Smokebox casting my DJH A2 and A1 had the same problem and both were rectified using the same method as you described.  They all look the part when complete

Regards

Bob

Interesting reading and nice photos guys. I'm hoping this kit will not have the issues you mention. The firebox/boiler/smokebox is all one casting, so that's OK. The valve gear will be wait & see.

Not exactly falling together like the tender did, but getting there slowly. Just some slight tweaking at the from end to get it exactly level with the upper running plates.  I drilled and tapped 8BA the rear end by the firebox to secure it the the footplate. (Not sure just how that was meant to be secured as no mention was made in the instructions.). But it works just fine and that's OK by me.

Got the chassis fitting to the body all squared off.  There are six screws to attach the body.  Tomorrow the correct size bogie wheels will arrive, (the ones in the photo are 2" too large).

Then I will probably get the inspiration to tackle the chassis detailing and valve gear etc.

Chassis is coming along now. That's as far as I can go until it's primed and painted as usual.  All was a good fit even down to the etched holes for the nuts & bolts etc.
