As a kid in the 1960s I spent many hours travelling around the rail network in the West Country,

after brief memories of steam most of our family holiday trips and days out were in Laira allocated DMUs.

It was not until the late 1970s that I started to take photos.

Just how I remember them - a Laira class 118 set P461 at Exeter Central on its way to Exmouth, 24/7/80

cheers

I bought this on Ebay recently, as I don't have too many photos of all blue dmus at Paddington.

It is not the best quality but does show what was an everyday scene 40 years ago, and as such was often ignored by photographers in pursuit of larger traction.

Tut, tut.

Is that an office bod I see

out on the tracks with no hi-vis

Which tempts me to ask the question, is there an easy way to tell a 118 unit from a 117 at a distance when numbers are unreadable?

Earlier in the thread, Tyseley's single-car units were mentioned. Here's one still with an SC prefix substituting as part of a 3-car unit at Leicester, 1982/83:

And a few livery variations from the collection...

Tyseley black cab windows, 1982/83 at Leicester:

Bedford-St Pancras hydraulic 127 repainted into green and on its way back south from overhaul and repainting (at Derby?). Also 1982/83 at Leicester:

GW-style chocolate and cream on the Greenford shuttle, 1985:

More green nostalgia on a Carlisle 108 at Seascale/Sellafield in 1987:

Hi. I have a few photo's of which many have already appeared in my East Yorkshire Railways thread. Anyway, here is one of a 3 car class 101 at Beverley station, late June, 1976. It has just arrived from Hull, and will work back to Hull in about half an hour.

Regards,

Rob.

This livery was not unique, in the literal sense of the word; but I think this was the only single unit painted chocolate and cream.

W55020 with W55027 at Reading on a standard summers day in June 1985.

Judging by the platform they are in, I presume they are waiting to work a service to Basingstoke.

or maybe a stopper to Newbury/Bedwyn? Southern 3H units were still working Basingstoke-Reading into 1986-87 at least, when I lived down that way.

Here's a 3-car in chocolate and cream, Hereford 1985:

and that SYPTE 114 in "coffee and cream", Rotherham 1984:

which is also visible in that Manchester Vic shot a couple of posts further back.
