DavidMcKenzie
A different day at the same location. Interestingly on this day the fast lines were closed for some reason and all traffic was using the slow lines though Tring and the fast traffic was then switching over again at the junction in Tring cutting just north of the station.

wombatofludham
That photo of 86224 barrelling through Stafford, brakes full on no doubt to take Queensville Curve without landing in the allotments, really sums up 1970s Stafford Station to me and why it was such an exciting place to visit with my primary school back in 1972 as part of BR's school safety programmes. That combination of ultra modern 60s architecture and high speed electrics is just spot on, even though unfortunately some of the more die-hard kettleistas can't see it.

Not local to Wigan, but my Grandparents lived off Barnsley St, so there was a great view of the WCML form the Back Bedroom. Later visits, when the photos were taken, the line was invisible behind rampant green stuff, so a walk up to the Spencer Rd Bridge/ Whitley Crossing, was a must. All dead & gone now, just like most of the locos that I took photos of! Regards Ian

Stafford was one of the coldest stations I remember, That brutalist 60s architecture was not warm and traveling via Coventry recently [seeing the City of Coventry nameplate] it's not changed much. I used to change traveling from Macc to university at Bristol. I recall the last sight of one of the 84's on a freight there in 1981. Dava

FPH 603
Why does the 83 have a large warning flash sign on the cab door? To give enthusiasts who only think tea-urns are proper locos nightmares. Or to make it more obvious to those who are dumb enough to try climbing onto the train roof and get killed by touching the overhead wires that IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! DY444
Why does the 83 have a large warning flash sign on the cab door? Iirc it was being used as a static converter to provide a 1500V DC supply for testing Class 506s. Edited February 3, 2018 by DY444
RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted February 3, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 3, 2018 Iirc it was being used as a static converter to provide a 1500V DC supply for testing Class 506s. Certainly not going far as it appears to be devoid of buffers and drawgear. Dave

It was returned to service as a 40 mph ECS machine, for use between Euston & Willesden CS, in September 1985. Here's a shot taken in Feb 1984 at LG, by my dad. https://flic.kr/p/o41bzd
