Mk 2 Aircons

My question was a bit tongue in cheek, I sort of knew the answer but what is annoying is that the sales chap was so sure it would be out by Christmas and was a bit taken a back by my scepticism. If they don't know I wish they would be honest and say so instead of just making things up to please people, if it's going to take four or five years at least come out and say so. It's not good business and just makes them look foolish. The models are excellent but come on manage expectations with a bit more care please.

The most I have seen is a 3D print of one end of a coach at a show earlier this year. I would hope to see painted samples at Warley. Would be pleastantly surprised if they were in the shops this year.

Well there in the tool room, and according to the Bachmann times, they are the only item currently being tooled up.... so perhaps they will progress to the artwork stage a lot quicker than we were expecting.... personally, I think Christmas is a stretch, but early next year looks promising....

  • 3 months later...

Announced 8 March 2013. I wonder how Bachmann will resolve the need for a tumblehome and ease of assembly? It's a difficult problem to crack, as we have seen from the Hornby mk2e and the earlier Gresley coaches.

They managed it Ok on the 2's and 2a's that they 've done, so there really shouldn't be an issue with the F's - so long as they use the same tried and trusted construction techniques.

cheers

I must say the Hornby ones are looking more and more attractive, like you say how much will they cost £50?

I reckon so.

Personally I'd rather spend £50-£60 on an accurate model (if one is available) compared to £25 on a model that needs serious work doing to it but that is my choice and I wouldn't expect others to feel the same.

Pricewise I'm an optimist....

i'm hoping for a price of about £40 after the usual discounts for the standard coach and maybe £55 for the DBSO's....add a bit more for the DCC lighted versions.... also depends which year they decide to actually deliver them!

Any more than this then I'll need to rethink/reduce my preorder!

I've said that quite a few times to be honest Graham. Life can really to be too short sometimes, so I would pay in the region of that amount for something that could be quickly re-numbered, weathered and on the layout. Problem is, as things stand, there's very few items of rolling stock that don't need quite a bit of fettling, in order to get them looking somewhere near right - it never ceases to amaze me, just how long it can take to work on just one coach. Far longer than stripping, detailing and weathering a Loco - add that up for even a relatively small 5 coach raft, and there's an awful lot of time goes into just one rake.

cheers

From the financial point of view I do wonder how well the forthcoming MK2 F coaches will pay back Bachmann's investment.

Airfix produced some air cons way back when, these then went to Dapol, then Hornby. Lima

I believe had some in their range.

Hornby made the less than perfect MK2 E variant , which can be had for £15 to £20.

This could all add up to a partially saturated market already, and any of the above mentioned

can be picked up very cheaply at shows etc.and will serve the less discerning.

I am sure the Bachmann MK2 F range will be fine, accurate models, but at today's prices.

How many modellers will forsake their earlier air cons. for the new products.

Particularly as the differences between MK 2 D, E &,F are pretty minimal in 4mm.

The specialist variants like the DBSO etc, will hopefully do well.
