There is an 'International Rules' competition taking in rules of both Australian and Gaelic codes, but there is a lot of criticism, due to 'excessive violence'. That is by the players, not the fans!

Too violent? Bunch of do-gooding softies.

Can't beat a game played with thinly disguised bludgeon weapons and a ball like a spherical brick.

Literally just found out that the Melbourne Cup is on today. They sure kept THAT quiet this year!

Same day every year!  (First Tuesday in November.)

I suspect that with the recent Victorian quarantine they didn't want to jinx it. The races of the triple crown in the US were held out of order this year. The Kentucky Derby is usually the first Saturday in May, and this year it was held on the first Saturday in September.

With the ubiquity of casinos / pokeys etc in most Australian states I think horse racing is losing relevance.  It's no longer the only (legal) outlet for the gambling addict.

Isn't it "pokies"?  I thought the other spelling meant another pastime entirely :rofl_mini:

Poker machines are a bane of Australian life.  They are a significant tax-raiser for the government and a significant source of poverty through addiction for the population.  Even some recent legislation regarding numbers of machines hasn't appeared to ease the scourge.  I knew of people who routinely played for many hours a day losing fortunes (and in one case the family home) in the process.

People complain about paying car rego/ council rates etc but then happily donate to the government by spending hours at the club paying pokies.

So...

I did have this idea that I was going to bring in if I got elected NSW premier, which was to have pokie machines installed at government offices such as the Road and Transport Authority.  You'd get your car rego renewal in the post, then go to the RTA office and pay your bill  by putting the money through a pokie machine. That would cut gambling since you'd had your pokie time  for the day, plus I could raise the cost of rego etc whenever I liked and people would be happy rather than p!ssed off cos it meant they could put MORE money through the pokies. Win win all around.

Similarly here, The State Of Origin (Rugby League) usually 3 games spread out over a couple of months mid-season, this year is 3 games played on successive weeks post grand final (first game tonight, played in Adelaide for some reason).

This time  last year this view I took yesterday down the road from where I live was so very different.

After 5 years of drought there was barely a blade of grass and what was there was brown, and you couldn't see that farmhouse because of the smoke from the Green Wattle  Creek fire which was burning out of control about 20km away.

Don't think it would be a Sydney Funnel web, they can't climb anything, probably a huntsman, those guys love playing tricks like that - favourite is to hide behind your sun visor so you drive along, sun gets in your eyes, flip down visor and theres a bloody big huntsman there right in front of your face..

I love this topic. I want the fear!

We had hoped to get out to Oz this autumn as part of a trip to the Solomon Isles, we haven't seen our daughter since New Year 2020. Now it looks like we will remain persona non grata for the year! Missing seeing the trees full of cockatoos and lorikeets so much!

I had to remove a horrible bushy tree recently. Why because a King Parrot was nesting or hunting for food in it and became trapped and died, I'm sad to say. It was a male.

Yes, I don't see much incoming tourists for a while yet. Even Australians are having major problems coming home.

Much fruit picking is done by either Pacific Islanders or backpackers. Due to travel restrictions, a lot of fruit is rotting on the trees.

Some PI's & Kiwis are likely to be allowed soon.

King Parrots are very attractive.

We should have thought more about moving to Oz a few years ago but it is too difficult for us old people with the health insurance expenses. I'm sure our daughter would like us to move and our sons partner is from near the Sunshine Coast but they say the Oz Pharma industry is too small for their specialisms.

I don't think they are the smartest of the parrots though. I put food out on the railing if galahs, rosellas  lorikeets, doves etc  or King Parrots arrive in the gum tree that hangs over our deck.

All the other species land on the railing no problem and pick up the nuts to eat, the King Parrots invariably land either right on top of them and knock them off,  land near them and knock them off as they walk over them to get the furthest one from them, or land near them facing the wrong way and brush them off with their tails as they turn around. Then they sit looking forlornly in at us.
