Bit more meddling in the shape of one of these...

Using one of these as a jig

and a bit more meddling with a file before work today too....  to the point (  :)  ) that my 'clever' (?) phone no longer recognises my finger print and demands I prove who I am with a PIN before it lets me use it!

Someone’s a fly fisherman? I never thought of using those instead of lumps of blu-tac!

Saw them on the eBay when I was looking for something else (?) and thought to myself, I know exactly what they're for... I'm havin' them!

Forget yer girly hair clip thingies, you need some of these to assist in burning your fingers. They are proper hurty pinchies!

They're called Hackle Pliers and as sp1 says are for holding yer flies up... making fishing flies. Any decent tackle shop should sell them.

and no, I don't fish for flies, that's just silly...

Filing Switch Blades Is Like Making Love To A Beautiful Woman...

Bit more fiddly diddling today, now they've let me out for the weekend.

post-1328-0-41078100-1508523494_thumb.jpg

Some frantic rubbing to start the afternoon (I had physio this morning, so cried until after the lunchtime news).

post-1328-0-63595200-1508522963_thumb.jpg

Shoved a curved one in too... just for a laugh, obviously.

post-1328-0-35474900-1508523245_thumb.jpg

I made two blades one of which was upside down , not what I had in mind, so the other will be recycled into something else.  Anyway the goodun' was jemmied into place...

post-1328-0-09540200-1508523371_thumb.jpg

and stuck in place with electric glue.

post-1328-0-92807300-1508523386_thumb.jpg

I'm still not used to leaving all my toys out since my beautiful pussycat, Peggy, ran out of purrs a month ago.

(it's not just physio that brings a tear to my eye).

Yeah absolutely Tim.

She was a little orphan when Nola (not Mrs Dubya) took her in, after her owner next door sadly died. Funnily Nola had spent ages trying to keep Peggy out of the garden beforehand (water pistols to the ready).

Pegster had a very good life and was well loved throughout (unless you were a mouse). She was poorly for two weeks before we had to let her go and was a respectable 15, almost to the day.

Nola has a habit of taking in orphans, our other dearly departed furry friend, Kitty was born in the garden shed to a ferral mum, who got scared off and abandoned her.

We know given time another furry friend, cat or dog, will find us.

Thanks guys, better out than in...

(and distracted you from that short rail fail up there).

Good to see some progress, took me a while to fathom out the correct way of using the switch blade jigs ( until told differently I filed the head first) but now they certainly are easier to make

I even had instructions on how to use the damn thing in the EMGS manual but failed to engage brian... or even the old grey matter.

Tim, if it helps when it comes to filing point blades using those useful jigs, once I've filed the top of the inside of the head off and turned the rail over to file the back of the blade, I then take the blade out of the jig, hold it as best I can using fingers at right angles to me/the modelling desk, and take some more metal off the top of the blade, as I sometimes find that just using the jig doesn't quite take enough off. That way you can thin the very tip of the blade down nicely until you are happy with it.

Captain

The instructions I received from the society stand was to file the backs flat first, then file the heads off, then finish off with a Swiss file (rail in a solid (thick metal) piece. Agree to chamfer the head from the tip at 45 degrees to upright at the end of the plaining, then round the tip, finish off with very fine emery paper.

Each to the method that works for them

Top tip, thanks Captain & Hayfield

I did a bit more meddling once out of the jig and compared my attempt to a pair of C&L blades (B's not A's) I have in stock.

But completely ignored the 45° along the top, which I shall 'retro file' later.

C&L managed to have two different blades first go in their pack.
