gobbler
On to a rake of five 20T hoppers. Had the hoppers bodies made a couple of months ago while I thought about how I was going to go about the rest of the build. 14

gobbler
What I would like is a drawing or dimensions of a 13t hopper. If anyone could pop a picture on here of name the book so I could buy it. That would be fab. Cheers
gobbler
Lots happened since the last update. All angle irons are complete, all W irons are cut out and glued on. The frames are now glued and in position. 16
Jon4470
Good to see you back producing your lovely models. Do you have a sequence that you follow to get the sides and ends properly aligned at the bottom of the hoppers (the part where the sides angle inwards as well as the ends). I found that very difficult to get joined up properly. I’d be grateful for any advice - you seem to get things accurately aligned. Thanks Jon

Thanks Jon Thanks Jon, I draw it all out on paper first to make sure everything fits. When cutting out the plastic bits, you got to remember to make allowances for the different thicknesses. To be honest, the long slope bits came out 2mm too long, which I just trimmed down. The bottom chute is a little too wide and is tight to the inside of a OO wheel sets. 2

Was hoping if anyone could point me in the direction of a book like Peter Tatlow's with drawings of a similar detail So hopefully I'll be able to make a couple off wagons like these. cheers Edited May 3, 2022 by gobbler
gobbler
But until I finish these 20t'ers the 13's will be on hold. Have added the outside brakes on all 5 wagons and just starting to add the spring details Thanks for looking TTFN

You can book into the reading room and ask for the drawings to be made available (in advance) and then photograph the drawings for your own personal use...drawing numbers here...(use 'control and F' to locate the '13t hopper' drawings)... https://www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/sites/default/files/2019-01/London %26 North Eastern Carriage and Wagon.pdf Cheers Duncan Edited May 6, 2022 by Axlebox control F tip added

Still a bit miffed that loads of my pictures have been lost...... Anyhow, been busy with a rake of 1st/3rd, full 3rd and 4 x 3rd and guard Thompson suburban coaches. gobbler
A bit more of the bogies have been done. Before these are assembled, the pinpoint bearing cups will be glued in.
gobbler
The next bits are done. I've fitted one set of wheels, no wobble and free running. Next will be adding the axle boxes, a layer over the frame sides to hide the joints on the end and give a bit of relief around the axle boxes. Then to add a lip over the the top edge. The gaps in the bogie frames were used to reinforce the bogie sides and help keep the square. Any Q's don't hesitate to ask Cheers Scott Edited November 7, 2022 by gobbler
gobbler
Even more done tonight, quite literally 'on a roll'. The bogies are coming along quite nicely. Started work on the axle box details, done in my usual way. The coaches now have sole bars and headstocks. Any Q's or ideas from my fellow scratch builders are always welcome. 13

RMweb Gold Bucoops Posted November 13, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2022 great work as always :) What's the difference between Gresley and Thompson bogies?
Tom D
I have only recently found your thread, and am enjoying following your build. May I ask how you complete your axle boxes? It appears as though you had glued a piece of plasticard to the axle, and then you mention 'axle boxes filled'. Best regards, Tom D

In reality they were quite different and the Thompson design was discarded in favour of a reversion to the better riding Gresley in fairly short order. In Bachmann's world they're the same thing, but called Thompsons because they make them for their Thompson coaches. 1

Best regards, Tom D Hi Tom Thanks for asking. Basically..... 1. once the bearings are pushed through the holes a quick clean up to take any nipples left by the machining process 2. I then secure with super glue, I cut small rectangular pieces the dimension of the axle box and glue again with super glue 3. Once all that is dry, fill in around the bearing with some squadron green filler. 4. Square off any excess filler, then add some basic details (I'll be posting some more pictures soon of my bogies) Any Q's, don't hesitate to ask. Hopefully this will inspire you to make some of your own stock. Post pictures on here or start your own thread. 7
gobbler
Bogies are coming along. The top edge is looking good. Have done a little bit of detailing to the exle boxes. Contemplating how to tackle the underside details, will post some more pictures soon. I'm thinking of skipping the rivet detail on the bogies..... 15
