Brian's 7mm Diesel Workbench, Belated up-date!

Recommended Posts

Done a bit more this afternoon.

I glued the body sides to the roof and inserted the white end supports. To help keep it all square I inserted one of the partitions near the end whilst the glue dried but made sure no glue touched the inserted partition. Once dry I superglued the etched ends on.

Once this was dry I glued the roof detail on.

On to the floor next. After gluing the bogie pivots in the floor I did what was suggested in the instructions and drilled and taped two 12BA bolts to hold the bogie pivots as well as the glue.

The bogie have been borrowed from a JLTRT BG I was building so instant mobility!

Attached the bufferbeam to the chassis.

Attached the chassis to the body with self tappers into the white end supports.

Added the supports for the truss rods. One annoying thing to do is you have to cut 2.5mm off the legs of these 5 supports to make them the correct length.

And lastly I added a plasticard strip for the roof overhang. This will be filled on the top joint and the top of the etched end joint to the plasticard strip.

Brian, how do you know where to put the roof detail, for example?

I have a Model Express MkI BCK to build, with a few extra parts, but there are no instructions, so I've no idea where to start.

Just varnished the 37 today John so might get it back together by the weekend but I am busy doing other stuff at the moment.

Had a nice day at the seaside yesterday looking at boats. That track on Hythe Pier looks a bit wonky!

Now which one of those containers has the Heljan Westerns in then...? :mosking:

I like your idea for securing the body to chassis, I had been thinking about a different method from the instructions on my EB DMU, yours seems an easy and logical solution.......although I must admit since retiring at Christmas I have been too busy to actually do any serious modelling and the EB kit remains 20% built in the model room.

Yes I too thought once retired I'd have more time for modelling, life doesn't always follow the plan!

The Heljan 37 re-build is getting there.

I have attached some Peter Harvey etches for the front window frames now. I will see how the glazing looks by reversing the Heljan ones so they sit a bit closer to these etches.

Top picture shows the Heljan glazing with the outer "rubber" picked out in black.

Done a bit more to this as well but can't do too much more at the moment as my electric drill has given up the ghost at last after about 30 years!

I have finish the truss rods underneath and added most of the castings. One thing that was missing from the kit was a long bolt and nut to go in middle of the coach to hold the floor up tight in the solebars. I phoned Easy-build and mentioned this but they said it should not have one but I think it does need one with all this cast weight under there now. So I have requested one.

Hi Brian,

Cracking progress with both models.

I seem to remember that several of the Western Thunder members have bolted on UF detail to EZ Build DMU's - I am pretty sure that the late Cynric Williams did.

Kind regards,

CME

You use an electric drill??????

A mini-drill? Or a big'un?

I can't say as I've used either much in modelling, I tend to use a small pillar drill/mill for accurate holes and that's it.

post-6766-0-65508600-1380111060.jpg

That's about normal, doesn't look much different from how I remember it ~30 years ago. It was always a rickety old ride, used to love it as a kid. Mind you I don't remember gaps in the planks that big!  :O
