Has a Class 58 ever graced the rails of Sussex?

Morning John…yep they certainly have. They used to work the in and out of Crawley New Yard and down to Newhaven on aggregate trains. 56s, 58s and 60s did these workings in the 90s.

It was a 58 that hauled away the 4CIG units that were involved in the Lewes train crash in 18th October 1999…

I filmed it a couple of days after the crash running up Hamsey Bank north of Lewes. Got the film in the loft somewhere.

Nice one Phil. Great photos as always.

Not my favourite 66 livery but this is the first time I’ve seen 783 trundling past. Sadly as I’m still in isolation for a couple more days so I didn’t get to see it better than out of a window. As my iPad isn’t up to much at distance the photo was pretty dreadful…..really must get a decent camera.

I’m looking forward to the summer months when I can get out to see the Down Newhaven workings in daylight.

No photo unfortunately but just before midnight at that far flung post of the Sussex Coast, Warblington, I was passed by a very modellable formation consisting of old Freightliner livery Class 66's topping and tailing a delightful rake of very tatty old OCA wagons brimmed with old signals and gantrys, probably from the Victoria Area Resignalling Scheme.

A very quick grab shot from the top of a 12A bus - saw the wagons being loaded and watched out for the loco between the buildings and stacks of pallets!

73213 and 73109 head the 12:35 3Y09 Tonbridge - Tonbridge across the flood plains south of Pulborough - 18 January 2023. This train has been running all week, 73109 being the common locomotive so far. This is due to run again tomorrow...interesting to know if the same engines will be involved.

I defer to your experience though, as nine years a '4CIG'-wallah.
