Accurascale Goes Bananas! SR D1478 and D1479 Diagram Banana Vans in OO/4mm

Recommended Posts

I reading above was about to ask if as the wagons became insulated, where they pre-heated at the depots thus remaining hot in transit . If the trend of ripening at home was not started at that time ? Otherwise why actually  insulate them unless to stop the ripening in extreme hot weather.

Thank. Peter

Wasn’t it because the banana boats were all refrigerated by this time and the bananas arrived green and were ripened in warehouses here? Hence transport temperature less critical

Fyffes used refrigerated ships from 1901, effectively the start of the West Indies trade to the UK, for which cooling was essential because of the duration of the voyage - imports from the Canaries had started earlier without it. The temperature was about 12-13 degrees C, intended to suspend ripening without damaging the fruit, so once off the ship ripening would be started by heating the railway vans in transit [or possibly only before loading, for short journeys], except in summer when the ambient temperature would be enough. Ripening continued in the warehouse ripening rooms after arrival. Heavier insulation in the railway vans, with no heating, meant that more of the ripening process was concentrated in the ripening room environment; later still the importers switched to ethylene gas ripening in the ripening rooms as it was quicker and more controllable than heating. I don't think that the latter change was related to the change in insulation, but I'm open to correction.

Apart from the very early days railway banana vans were all insulated; the mid-1950s change removed heating and substituted thicker insulation. Most had also been equipped with ventilators, but ventilation seems to have stopped before WW2 as no vans built after the war were so equipped. It was possible to heat the vans before loading as well as in transit [or for part of the transit only], it depended on what the importer wanted, which in turn depended on the time expected to be taken travelling from the docks and the ambient temperature; there was limited need for it in summer.

Ripening green bananas at home was a concept introduced after railway involvement ceased, so far as I know; shops normally sold bananas for more or less immediate consumption in that era.

There are reports today that a US registered cargo ship has been struck by a missile.

Though maybe the Cape is going to be the way to go now…..we seem to be approaching a reprise of the Vietnam predicament. It being, amongst other tricky situations, election year USA….with The Donald still a major player. Who’s blinking first ? Testosterone ready to fire. Good luck all.

'next week' seems to have been and gone - are the Banana Vans on the same boat as the Mk2b coaches ?

Hi @Wickham Green too,

Apologies, any time I give out logistics info it comes back round and punches me in the back of the head.

Correct, in the same container as the Mark 2b coaches, so docks this week, lands in the warehouse next week.

Cheers!
