Thanks Baz.

Today one of operating crew bought along seven of his mineral wagons for a check up and a test run on the layout. They all worked fine.

We then had a good discussion on the proportions of the engine shed mock up. A few small modifications required then will see how it looks.

After that we worked pit how the ground frame sat and linkage to the point rodding.

The ground frame is now under construction.

Early this morning I completed the point rodding. One lever on the ground frame does two turnouts whilst the other is for the only signal on the layout.

The MG now has number plates. This will be it's only visit on this layout (its an Exeter plate, hence suitable for North Devon).

Good morning.

Up early again and more progress on the layout.

The track on the direct line to the mainline has been laid. This line up on an Embankment was built when the yard was constructed but never connected to the mainline. In the end part of it was used to store rolling stock and prior to nationalisation to break up various coaches and wagons. I don't know when the track was lifted but I will have this heavily overgrown and maybe the odd item of rolling stock in a very poor state.

The platform has had its first coat of paint in this photo but has since had a wash of brown to tone it down. The signal still requires it's ladder.

And finally a Rake of mineral wagons behind the C class. Most locos now have crew. The Queen Mary brake van is unlikely to be used on the layout but is just there at the moment whilst it gets further weathering.

Thanks Paul. Was a good weekend at the Freemo meet hence why not a lot done on the layout in the last couple of weeks.

However I have been adjusting the cardboard mock up of the engine shed. It has been shortened and raised a little. The windows, timber framing and lower brick area marked out.

I am now reasonably happy with the proportions of the mock up compared to the photos of the real thing, so styrene cutting will start soon.

After getting back from our two week rail trip around the UK I am now back working on the layout. It's just over five months since work started on the boards but it's now under three months to go beftits first show.

The shed walls are taking shape with work concentrating on the interior framing. A lot of this won't be seen but if I am going to add the bit by the doors thrn I might aswell do the whole interior.

There is a section of full height brickwork that I identified from a photo taken whilst the new shed was under construction. It's the wall of the workshop behind the shed. I sm adding doors but these are just guess work as so far I haven't found any photos of them.

Wall have been laminated with various sheets of styrene so that should reduce chances of warping. I have builds built in this manner that are 30 or so years old that have very little movement in them.

Once the internal timber framing is done I can thrn move onto the exterior cladding.

Looks good, hope the aches and pains continued to ease, I guess you took plenty of relaxation medication on the trip? 🍻

Thanks Paul

Yes plenty of medication in many drinking establishments. Did miss one that we wanted to do, a microbrewery and bar right in the centre of the town in Barmouth. We got to the hotel off the train at 6 pm and ordered food at 6.0pm only to find out that the place closes at 7pm each day even in the height of the summer, so didn't get chance to visit it. We console on numerous pints of Purple Moose brewery beers in the hotel and another place in town.

Back is much better now whilst sitting here working on the engine shed.

This evening I completed the interior to a state that it could be primed.

The outside cladding has also been added after cutting individual corrugated sheets and applying as per the few photos that there are of the shed. The walls are quite a bit thicker than thry ought to be but that won't be noticeable once the shed doors are fitted.

The shed exterior is now in primer.

Another test to make sure the building fits on the layout and clearances for the locos.

Storage in the shed is a little tight at present till I put more perspex up 👆 N the rafters for the recent aircraft builds.

Easy to get the sheds confused! 😆 One of the best aviation stories I’ve heard was a bored Shackleton navigator steering them round a baked bean he’d dropped on the map 😂

Facing point lock if you are running passenger stock?

Not necessarily on light railways,

from bécasse’s post below,

there were two other circumstances in which passenger traffic could be worked over points which didn't have FPLs (and which weren't clipped and padlocked):

1) on a line worked under Light Railway regulations where the MoT had approved the lack of FPLs (although most Light Railway lines carrying passenger traffic did in fact use FPLs),”

We have studied the photos and there wasnt one. Just two levers on the ground frame, one for the turnouts and one for the signal.

The signal itself was strange in that there was no ladder in earlier years, just rungs on the post and a pulley system to lower the lamp. In later years there was a ladder. I have yet to add the ladder.

Early this morning more weatheriing carried out on the engine shed.

Hopefully the windows will be added tomorrow.

A new loco arrived today.  Whilst Weston Clevedon and Portishead Railway terrier never ran on the EKR, it's boiler was owned by them.

So a twist in history will see it running on the layout.

Luckily I had a spare Next 18 decoder to fit in the loco

This evening the windows were fitted then weathered. Just lighting inside and the main shed doors. Then the base needs doing but that will involve unscrewing the backscene to be able to use the router to cut the inspection pits.

There is a visiting sentinel shunter  that has been on the High Line to give it a good run in for a friend as it's a bit jittery out of the box.

Edit.not sure what's going on with uploading the photos at present

Good morning.

As of last night he shed doors were fitted and painted plus the strip along the bottom of the walls (in white styrene) is in place and will form the locating piece into the slot on the future base once I router out for he pits.

The shed was put onto the layout for a quick clearance check of the doors. All OK.

I.D. Backscenes ordered early this morning. These are just of trees to match as close as possible what is in the black and white photos post nationalisation.

Once the base is done I then have two months to do the ground cover and trees.

Another good early morning working on the layout. I was in the shed by 3 am, so plenty of time to complete cladding to the workshop section of the engine shed before painting it.

I also assembled the inspection pits steps and once fitted, primed the entire base. It's now painted concrete colour but will require weathering.
