Nice work.  I was wondering, are you an owl, bat, or something similar?!

Sometimes it feels like it. A hangover from having to get up early to get round the M25 each morning before it becomes a car park.

This morning I have just got back into the house after spending two hours in the shed ballasting the track in front of the engine shed.

This morning,  as usual in the early hours, the now dried ballast around the engine shed tracks has been weathered to represent the ash that used to ballast the whole line when it was built. Some of the sidings in the foreground will also have the same treatment but the main running line was replaced with bullhead in chairs during ww2. So this will remain cleaner looking.

I have sldo temporarily fitted the tree backscene to see if I am happy with it.

I normally cut off the sky area so that the painted board can be touched up over time  but I quite like the effect yhat the printed sky is producing.  A bit more thought on that.

I have now scratch built the two water columns from Airfix kit sprue. The outer corner sections of sprue aee very handy for the curved part of each water column. Both at different as the one by the running line was added at a later date so that locos didn't have keep going on shed where the original water column was situated.

I also forgot to add the ash pit partly due to no clear photos of it. Anyway the Dremel made quick work cutting through the ad keepers and board. It's now painted concrete colour on reddiness for weather's and adding ash.

The back scene on the shed board has now been glued on. I did cut off  the printed sky section so that the painted sky can be touched up as needed.

The water columns are now fixed in place and the ash pit now has ash in it.

The next stage is to get the back scene on the other two boards.

Yesterday I cut out the back scene for another board. This one was  little trickier as I can no longer remove the ply back due to ballasting where the track passes through.

It was fairly straight forward as the ground is flat across the back apart from a small section.

The final sections of back scene have now been fitted and the three scenic boards set up in the shed. They will now stay up for a few weeks whilst detailing is added.

Looking very good!  Could you put a space between the photos next time please, I think it makes them easier to look at.

All posted via my mobile but I have amended and will try to remember to do so as it does look better.

Back home after visiting Making Tracks in Chester over the weekend. Well worth the visit.

Early yesterday morning I started the small out buildings. Photos of these structures are not clear so some guess work constructing them. Two are just low relief but help break up the tree line.

The C class is back on the layout. I now have a Golden Arrow kit for a O1 tender loco. It requires a Hornby jinty chassis amongst other things

More details around the engine shed area including more piles of ash etc. Also the old lifting gantry steels laid on the ground a per the prototype.

I have also built the safety rail to the signal ladder. It was a very basic arrangement on many of the lines signals.

I have some photos around nationalisation where the yard is fairly empty if rolling stock due to a purge in scrapping it but there is a lot more rail stacked up, so I have made a start in using up long stored lengths of old track. The photos appear to show both flat bottom and bullhead rail. It's amazing how much rail is needed to represent this but luckily I have quite a lot if old track that is really not suitable to run trains on anymore.

The photo only shows the first batch of rail cut and painted ready for fixing in place.

It's amazing just how much rail was used to create the scene below. At least ist used up all the old track that had been lying around for many years, some of the track being well over 30 years old. All stuck in place and partly weathered but still more to do.

Foliage will be the next task after paying  a visit to Squires in Bognor today.

It's planting season.

So far I have used quite a few bags of 6mm and 2mm static grass but a good job that I still have quite a few more that should be enough to complete the layout. Still a lot more vegetation to add to the embankment.

I have added just one figure to the layout at present to remove the deserted feeling. Very few people appear in the photos taken around the station and yard, so I may not add many more.

Just found this  - delighted with it. I'll be following it from now. What make are the trees backscene, please, as they look to me ideal for a future project I have in mind.

Thanks Ben

It's produced by ID Backscenes. It's the plain paper verslion. I used the De Luxe Backscenes adhesive for the first time and quite pleased with the outcome.

Hi @roundhouse. The picture below the quote above has a superb representation of ash ballast. I've looked back, but can only find the first quote on how you've achieved such a realistic representation. Please can you provide some more detail on what you have done ?

I started off laying  Gaugemaster GM 115 granite Ballast N scale and waited till he diluted PVA glue had set,  then a wash of MIG productions black wash (for aircraft panel lining and weathering) but diluted it more in white spirit

While the wash is still wet I sprinkled it with dry polyfiller where crew walk in the four foot. The final layer applied randomly is Peco coal dust PS-362 and where ash has been dumped Peco Ash dust PS-364, both set in diluted PVA after dampening with a spray of water with a touch of washing up liquid to break he surface tension.

The greenery is continuing apace with more bushes planted on the embankment. Still plenty more to add though.

At the it her end of the layout of the he static grass is underway. There will get more added around the shed by adding different shades and lengths of static material. I may also add some to the platform as it would only be used by work men's trains, so I guess it would be in quite a run down state.

Early this morning I added the Westinghouse pump to the side of the O1. Still quite a few details to add but it is getting closer to being ready. For now it will just get the number 2  on the cabside but maybe later it will get the EKR on the tender.

The trees by the station are now fixed in place.
