Hi,

Yes I bought a few kits and I’m really impressed so far.

i have painted the gates and added the strapping and hinges. Bit of weathering to do before planting.

IMG_4696.jpeg.8e0261c2cd83fc34247aa2765e4d758f.jpeg

I mentioned the kit for the utility building and here is the rough shell approximately placed. I need to paint the ledges, add guttering and alarm, etc.

A back view only the operator will see in case anyone needs to see the back.

I have also bought some concrete posted single and double bar metal fencing for around the yard. Decided on the double version. The posts are painted with Tamiya deck tan. Not finished but you get the idea. Undergrowth will take over as the fencing reaches the grass.

Really nice modeling - I really like your ground cover, something that I never get quite right around the yard..

Hi,

To be honest I always take a few attempts to get it right..ish. I use Atwood aggregates fine road stone, then paint it, then apply sieved wood burner ash over glue or paint.

I think the best result, for the yard, is ash on wet humbrol gloss 40. Then add glue and sprinkle more later. The roads are neat Atwood aggregates road stone.

It always requires going back and adding more and mucking about with. I was very pleasantly surprised with the match I got on the new bit behind the gate on the second board versus what I did a few years ago around the signal box.

I will add more powders and clumps of static grass and weeds.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

James

Hi all,

Bit more progress to report.

I have installed the gate and made some progress around it. I have decided to have a wall coming off the gate and angling away to the track. The wire fencing can then start behind the corner and go along the road.

First I cut a foundation in the existing terrain. I like the fact there will be grass and earth at the base of the scenic side of the wall.

IMG_4701.jpeg.707d59400f353d19adf012f56dea2ce0.jpeg

The wall is a 2mm card sandwich and will be covered by Scalescenes block wall sheets.

I have also drilled the holes for the posts. I plan to use a piece of wooden kebab stick as the first post behind the wall. It will enable me to drill a deep hole for it and tension against it when I pull the wire through. I know in the real world it would have a 45 degree bracing post, but this is a better solution for the model world and will be mostly hidden by the wall.

See the left hand post below, a nice tight fit in the baseboard so I can remove and replace it later. It is double this length to get a decent resistance to leaning later.

Posts in and drying…

This is all looking very good, I've been avoiding installing fencing for a while since a couple of initial disasters. (Not really disasters, just time consuming ways of finding out how not to do it!) I'm feeling inspired to have another go now.

Hi all,

Bit more progress on the wire fence.

I ran a black sharpee pen over the plastic thread a couple of times to tone the white/clear clean nature of it. I cut two lengths so I could loop it through the end ‘stick’. The top two wires being one piece and the bottom two another. I glued them to the stick so I could lightly pull the wire through and tension it later.

IMG_4730.jpeg.312e67d1a59054c843c9e4f4ca4274b7.jpeg

The stick tapped into its hole, I took the time with drilling to get a nice tight fit so it sits firm but is removable.

IMG_4731.jpeg.fbcd5c638c7cdf56906cb3ad2e579511.jpeg

Then it is careful threading work with the tweezers! The bottom line is the worst as it is partly buried and amongst the grass. I have drilled and put a stick at the other end by the wing wall too….this will be covered/obscured by undergrowth.

IMG_4736.jpeg.eb605cd3957905e0c082ed116add0f9a.jpeg

All threaded with the stick tapped down further. I need to re-apply some paint.

IMG_4737.jpeg.2232e383eddef20e2aad0ce4bc031e6e.jpeg

I have covered the walls with block paper. The larger wall is not fixed yet as I need to weather it.

IMG_4739.jpeg.1dfb5b64d29aa2e7ae4300833ae554b7.jpeg

I will put another concrete post in at the end of the wall to finish the join.

IMG_4740.jpeg.535dffdb6b1e7967571f1ddcb0a872b7.jpeg

Overall view, really pleased with it….ignore the bush that has fallen on the track!

You can see the bulldog clips weighing down the wire ends. I will apply glue to secure and tie off the ends against the final stick.

A decent weekends progress.

Cheers,

James

Hi all,

Bit of an update.

I have dulled down the wall a bit with powders and sealed it with Matt varnish.

I have also added some bushes/brambles using pulled out fine brown postiche covered in gaugemaster dark green leaves. I also plan to add tufts and some other detail. Really pleased with it so far.

I still need some grass at the base of the wall near the gate post…

I had to Google postiche... That's looking really good!

Ha, yes I had to look up the spelling!

I nearly put horse hair but then thought no, it’s not that. It’s very useful and a little goes a long way. I always pull it out really fine….then when it shows a little it adds to the effect.

Hi all,

Bit more progress to report.

I have started on the fencing around the raised foreground on the scenic exit. I am using some security fencing (wills I think) that I have used before on Bratton Lane. It is a bit fiddly, and it is difficult to get, and keep, the posts vertical.

The shape of the hardstanding has been squared off with a bit more grass so I can have a right angle in the fence and give it a bit more rigidity.

The one criticism of the kit I would have is that there is real lack of wire for the three holes at the top of the posts….no where near enough for the posts spaced at 40mm as instructed. I have bought some 0.5mm jewellery wire on a reel but the lengths supplied in the kit are better in that they are straight….and don’t require you to try and straighten them!

Here is where I am for now….all using the supplied wire except for the longer top wire parallel with the track. The posts on this section are still being pulled about a bit and still need adjustment. When I have it right I dab a bit of superglue where the wire passes through the posts. Only do this when you have all three wires in place as it is easy to glue something you don’t want to….or block a hole with no wire in it yet!

Hi all,

Bit more progress to report.

I have finished the fencing. This is very difficult to get really straight so it is prototypically wavy and untidy!

The chain link/mesh part is very difficult to cut. I struggled to cut it with a ruler and sharp knife - it just caught and ripped. So I marked a 20mm wide band and tried to use some scissors…..better but not perfect. I reckon it looks ok and not perfect is not too bad.

I used uhu glue to fix it to the posts and that went very well. It gave enough time to move the mesh about, but held quick enough to enable me to pull the mesh nice and taut. As I say, not perfect but when the various buildings and sheds are in place it will be better hidden. It is also not possible to look down the line parallel to the track!

IMG_4817.jpeg.023d5e3d7ca827990b729c164ec1c08d.jpeg

You might have also noticed I have added a wall on the rear right bridge edge and added some capping to the walls and walls. The caps are squares out of plasticard, and the wall tops are scribed plastic strip. This needs to be painted. I plan to add greenery behind the new wall against the backscene .

IMG_4818.jpeg.03606d061eed0841e7b63712cccabbd9.jpeg

I have also added some basic hedge foundation to the board edge….this is horsehair sprayed camo brown and covered in scatter.

IMG_4819.jpeg.98669493e8ed87af90c3984430f04b0f.jpeg

The overall scene coming together…..much happier with this against the old bridge combo I did have in this section.

I still need to address the ‘meadow’ between the hedge and the mesh fence. A diagonal fence will run from the hedge near the track to the corner of the mesh fence. Animals close to the front and undergrowth on the verge down to the track similar to the other side of the track.

Hi all,

I have been playing with the station building over the last few weeks. I bought a stand alone canopy but it didn’t blend that well with the current building and canopy. I decided to purchase a second canopy kit and adapt it to fit the building….making a continuous structure along the platform.

Here is how it was…

90A4C057-8DE8-4BC0-BC3F-F67902A78D80IMG_20230127_160057.jpeg.ec3c183e32d3d3db0d13183d14306392.jpeg

And here are the beginnings of the transformation. I decided to continue the existing  canopy slope and cut it into the slate roof of the station building. This was difficult to judge until I built up the canopy but I am pleased with the result. I had to scratch build something for the left hand building end….hardly a massive job but I was pleased with it. I could have left the canopy as a pitched roof against the building but it seemed to join a but low on the wall beneath the tile edge to me.

Here are some pics of the progress….

It might be a bit long for a station of this size….but I think it sits on the platform well.

I think it gives the station the air of a seasonally important West Country holiday terminus, such as Minehead or Ilfracombe!

I’m no photographer but the back scene blend and sky look really good to me.

Sorry, self praise is no praise as my mum would have said!

There is nothing wrong with being proud of what you have achieved. If you can stand back, look at your modelling and think "that looks really good" then you've succeeded!
And yes the scenic/background "join" is marvellously done, works perfectly 👌

Hi

I'd better clarify that I'm agreeing that the picture looks really good.......

If taken from a lower angle it could be a contender for the real thing.

The back scene join is just about invisible.......

Excellent modelling ....Keep up the good work...

Cheers Bill

Definitely not, especially as we are all our own worst critics, if we're proud of what we've done, it must be good.

Besides, we build these models to please ourselves and create a scene we enjoy looking at.

So I'd say you've hit the bullseye.
