I use plastic kits. For the wheels or sides/ends? Personally never really needed them. For wheels this is available. https://www.brassmasters.co.uk/axle_gauges.htm There was a similar Bill Bedford version that I don't think is currently available. No idea about side/end jigs. Small engineers squares would probably work best IMO. There are these. Never used them so can't comment. https://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/p/48111/PR-SS-02-Proses-Snap-and-Glue-Set-Square-(2-Magnetic-Clamps-w-8-Ma And if you can, check them for squareness on a very flat surface such as a pane of glass/mirror. smokebox
Lego bricks can be used for getting things square, they are very precisely made.
Barclay
After 40 years building wagons without any help I recently obtained one of these Brassmasters jigs and I must say it was a pleasure to use.
