RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 4, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 4, 2016 You have been standing on the platform watching a constant stream of big green stuff for some time now, but it is about to be interrupted, for a short time at least by things more mundane and black. A J6 takes the opportunity of the fact that the Up main is signalled for bi directional working to slip through with a transfer goods from South yard. While at Platform 6, a B12, which should not be described as "mundane", is at the head of the 1234 to Cambridge.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted July 4, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2016 That J6 is exquisite! I love it, and I hope there will be lots of photos to come of it. You cannot have enough of an engine like a J6. It really is such a good model of the class - LMR? With warmest regards, Rob.

They were top of the wish lists a while back, and I hoped we might see a RTR one, but alas it is looking increasingly unlikely now we have the J11 and J15. The only problem with the LMR ones is that the body is a sound box, and they are rather noisy, particularly when running forwards, which is why you often see mine running tender first. We've tried several ways to cure this, but with little success.
ROY@34F
Thanks Roy. Would that have been the early morning duty where the Nottingham and Newark coaches were added to a few more at Grantham, and then as you say off to KX? I'm not sure about that Gilbert. I can't even remember how early in a morning it was , but I do remember it being a bit droughty going to Newark ! Roy.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 4, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 4, 2016 Golf in Leeds today, and we just got in the clubhouse afterwards before the heavens opened. I sat smugly watching this downpour, and then realised I had to drive home in it. And what a journey! See the drivers of 42 ton Artics still overtaking each other in blinding spray and standing water. Marvel at the brain dead idiots still charging along the outside lane at 90+. We were relieved to get home in one piece, and I am rather tired. Before I crawl off to bed though, here is another picture of that J6. and then a close up of a Thompson semi corridor lavatory composite. I love that name. and another angle on the B12. Not very succesful, that one. And I shall now stagger off to bed, hoping I shall not be overtaken by an Audi on the way.

I'd need so many locos, so much rolling stock, and there would be other difficulties. All the signals would be wrong, for a start. I keep thinking about having one pre war train, but really that would just be incongruous, and there are still things to do in 1958 on which money can be more wisely spent. It will remain a dream, but at least there is Grantham which gives us access to that period when we need it.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 5, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 5, 2016 More trains to be run, and photos taken, shortly, but in the meantime we have a few more of the J6 and B12. The photographer apologises for letting the loco run just a little too far before pressing the shutter. The B12 is now approaching the chord down to East station, and thence to Cambridge.
RMweb Premium great northern Posted July 5, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2016 How about 1908? Oh, hang on, you couldn't keep much of your rolling stock - J3? Even the J3 would need backdating somewhat I think. It would be a very interesting period to model, but would need scratch building skills I don't possess. It is going to happen on Sandy though.

No worries though, the breakdown train is only at the other end of the platforms.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 5, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 5, 2016 Something different later, I said. Well, you can't get much greater difference than this. From an elderly lady and three non corridor coaches to........ a world record holder with a premium luxury express, taken by our man on Platform 3, who will feature prominently for a while now. Nice way to end an evening, don't you think?
JZ
Apart from quantity a cwm would create no more thermal shock than heavy rain or snow. The air-smoothed were reputedly built that way to enable them to be machine cleaned although I don't know if they ever were but at least one US 'road reportedly ran its modern steam engines through washing machines. Not that either would have made any difference at Gateshead I would imagine because it turned filthy engines into an art form. That could account for the state the casing was in in their later days. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 6, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 6, 2016 What a world it was back then. Our photographer doesn't even have to move more than a few feet,or wait more than a few minutes, for a beautifully presented March B17 to replace Mallard in his viewfinder. This is the 0907 from Doncaster, and I think that if I could choose to go back in time and pick one train to travel on, this would be a contender. From Doncaster it ran via the GN&GE to Gainsborough Lea Road, and thence to Lincoln. From there along the bank of the River Witham to Boston, and finally along the original GN through Spalding to Peterborough. Not glamorous places, but for a snapshot of the everyday railway in still much the same condition as it had been for many decades, what more could you ask? And travel behind a B17 too. Our photographer felt it worth more precious colour film too, as he then moved back a few yards, being careful not to inconvenience passengers, of course, and got another image for us to enjoy.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 6, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 6, 2016 Staying where we were, the next visitor perhaps doesn't quite match up to its predecessors so far as looks are concerned. South Lynn allocated Ivatt 4 with an arrival from Yarmouth Beach. Not much has been happening at the other end, but the sound of an approaching train sends the cameraman scurrying southwards. Approaching the excursion platform is the 1040 KX - Grantham, sometimes headed by a top link A4. Today though it is a V2, in rather shabby condition for a 34A engine.
RMweb Premium great northern Posted July 7, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 7, 2016 Another couple of shots of the V2 this morning. I had resolved to do only one of any locomotive or train, but somehow I always finish up doing more. Just looking at these again, I'm wondering if a completely neutral sky is the best way to do things. As usual, your views will be appreciated.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted July 7, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2016 That sky is works very nicely indeed. I would not alter it. It helps to focus attention on the layout. And skys are not always so dramatic anyway. Best regards, Rob.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted July 7, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 7, 2016 A visit to the Chiropractor yesterday revealed that I had somehow got myself into a sort of Z shape, so I was manipulated. Today I went for a golf lesson, to find out if I was doing it all wrong. I was. Let's have another train. The cameraman had to answer a call of nature, and so nearly missed the next prestige train, this time the Yorkshire Pullman. Rushing down to the end of the platform, he managed to get this view. Yesterday I decided to put the camera on its tripod and wander aroud looking for views which might give you something different for a change. I'm not sure what the cameraman climbed to get this view, but there are some interesting rooflines, and it is unadulterated.
