And still more, Stewartby, 1984, from the back of a DMU. How many of those chimneys are left standing nowadays?

Apologies for the very late reply with this one! There are only four chimneys left standing at Stewartby now, off to the right of the photo on the Up side, all those on the left are now gone, as are most of the other structures on that side of the line.

Just been recapping the entire thread and am amazed at how many fantastic contributions I've missed up to now!

Thousand at Padd - which (if any) of these do you prefer?

Top one, despite the graininess. Bottom one looks over-smoothed to my eyes, almost like a watercolour effect, especially on the background. Some people might prefer that, but I think the grainy one matches the workaday, gritty, industrial look better.

Thinking about it, there's almost an expectation of graininess that comes from knowing it's an old B&W film shot. If you didn't know a thing about trains, and had no date for the picture, you might "naturally" prefer the second one.

Better of the two, Mike! Minus five points!

But you don't say: "put your better foot forward"!

And by definition, if it's the better of two, it's also the best available.

But you don't say: "put your better foot forward"!

Why not? the phrase may well have originated with Shakespeare:

" ... make haste: the better foote before."

(King John; Act 4 Scene 2 (175))

Alas, how our standards have fallen over the last four hundred years!
