In between power failures last night, put up a wall on backside of upper level and stuck down some road into the tunnel.

The bridge has turned out very nicely, as has the rest.

As i am "temporailly" unemployed there has been some good modeling time. The tunnel has been completed, bedded in and finished off. Around the building at the right of the tunnel grass has grown up and two owners of the shop are out front. They are wondering where the fencing is and what there shop is goinh to be called.

 

Kerbing, road and walkers have shown up around the tunnel .

 

And here is the shot from the helicopter showing the kerbing heading into both sides of the tunnel.

 

Thats where we were last night, today we attacked the workmans yard. It has now been named Angus Builders, grass has grown up, the fencing has arrived to keep folks out of the yard.

Really need to get stuck into buliding the houses/shops and the rest of the retaining wall.

Looks like Angus needs to invest in a fork lift truck!

 

even though the bus clears the tunnel height wise, it's likely that the driver would be a little more towards the centre of the road so that he doesn't catch the back end as he starts to turn the corner. Most likely his driver side wheels be over the line, then he'll steer left slightly before going right in order to not cut the corner too much.

Over the weekend Angus did indeed take delivery of a forklift as well as some other building material, wood stacks, some corrugated sheets and other bits and pieces. So they are ready for business.

 

As it was the weekend whilst out train spotting at the station EWS was seen to be doing some track work. 37419 was in charge of the ballast train 66072 was in charge of the spoils and scrap train.

 

 

Now for a question. I would like to have a station entrance on the lower level for the upper station. This area is going to be covered by brick from the scalescenes retaining wall and then I was going to build a station entrance in the area between the buildings. Is there some prototype for this out there? If so pictures please.

Have a look at the area around Deansgate Station in Manchester, or maybe Ashford International (domestic side) - there must be plenty of others but I can't think of them at present!

In an effort to avoid all the election coverage here in America I've locked my self in the "train room" with biscuits, Pink Floyd and rmweb.

 

Simon I had a look at Deansgate via google since its a long drive from here and thought about the space that the station would fill. There was going to be a lot of open space with a very flat station entrance. So seeing the pictures of the station buiilding infront and lower than the tracks I followed that train of thought of and looked at Scalescenes large station (r005). If I was going this route we would also need to have a car park.

 

So using the Scalescenes car park (tx 22) I've roughed this in, none of it is permanent yet so we will see how it goes.

 

The white borders are most likely going to be grass and then the asphalt blended in heading towards the track.

 

So with the car park roughed in a paper template of the station was placed,

 

 

This is going to done in a brown brick so it is a different colour than all of the other brick that is going to be in this area. Some work was done on the retaining wall and will need to be completed before moving on. So plan going forward is to finish of the wall, finish car park and then attack the station. Up on the platform there is also going to be platform subway (r006), so lots of cutting and glueing to come (really need to finish off those shops too)

I can go with the station building you're using, however you'll need to make the building continue up onto the platform as though the platform level and the concourse joining booking hall to upper level were all built as one, requiring a slightly grander platform level building to match with the lower level.

That's what has been on my mind, it really is a grand building in a slightly worn side of the town. Might be able to get away with the argument that the area used to be a richer side of town that has fallen into harder times and now is a bit more industrial. In this story the station would be an historical building and thus cant be torn down or changed

Wasnt thinking about using the over roof however i do agree that a simple set of hidden stairs to track level seems a bit of a cop out. So if i take the booking hall that is on the side of the large station and place it on the platform maybe that would tie it together.

There are quite a few stations with old grand main buildings but the platforms rather basic after the platform canopies or overall roof have been removed. Middlesborough is one example

Worked on the car park today, pretty happy with it.

 

 

 

In light of the previous post I think im going to stick with the station were it is and put a bigger platform structure up above and say thats how you get from the platforms to the station. Maybe have some stairs toward the ends so you can exit/enter the platform from the road tunnel/ street level too. my minds eye sees this looking good.

 

 

 

Back to working on the retaining wall.

Have a look at Maidenhead station, it's a GWR building on the Reading - London line and uses a subway under the railway which is on retaining walls, with stairs coming up onto platform, the building isn't quite as grand, but it's only a small town station,

 

also, have a look at Kirkgate station in wakefield, it used to be the main LMS station and was the larger station in Wakefield, now it sits half derelict tucked behind a block of flats and council estate and I'd argue that in it's heyday it was as grand as what you're building.

 

It did used to have an over-roof but it was taken down many years ago, the building on the centre platform was removed due to platform width at some point also. So if you didn't want the grand buildings on platform, it's possible to make it look as though things have been changed over the years but the station front has remained.

Thanks for all of the station suggestions. Plowing ahead with idea of the split station level station and think its going to work well. This picture is starting to show what is in my mind.

 

 

Today finished up the retaining wall with a faux wall on the far side of the upper level.

 

 

 

I feel this area is starting to come together. Tomorrow my plan is to attack the upper level station building.

As promised, worked on the Scalescenes large station module B today.

 

At the start and then at the end, front and then back. This being furloughed really lets me have time to put these kits together;I cant say enough about how clever and enjoyable these are.

Took a break from scalescenes today and decided to tackle the backscene. Ive wanted something that is sort of dark and foreboding not simply bright sunny sky. Im not entirely pleased with the one behind the country station as it has no dimension. So messed around with some others ive found.

 

This one works well and will probably go with it, temporary at the moment before printing it off properly. It has a nice mix of dark and light clouds, some sky and ground.

 

Here it is behind the platform building

 

 

 

 

For the eagle eyed youll notice that it is sloping, this is going to happen as the roof of the house slopes down behind the layout. Up close i think this will work as it sort of forces perspective.

With my temporary unemployment continuing we had a much unneeded expense yesterday; our water pump failed, it sits at the bottom of the well 210 ft underground. So after a considerable sum of money/work we once again have water.

 

To make myself feel better i did some work on the backscene. This is still temporary and the stiching needs to be worked on, the final product will also be printed off in one sheet to avoid all the breaks. However i am pleased with it and really starting to pull things things together.

 

Behind the TMD, in my final version I see this area having some low relief flats, low relief cinema/department store, low relief office blocks all at roughly the same height as the track but sitting behind a low wall

 

These photos show that the all over grey sky has been replaced by this different scene, i think that this makes quiet a difference

The station building on the platform looks very good,why not just have an awning and foot entrance on the ground level instead of the large building you propose? This would be more in keeping with the area around your station ,cycle racks and possibly a kiosk would compliment this feature and not overwhelm the scene.Your progress is great by the way the platform building looks a bit like the ones south of Birmingham on the Chiltern route,Dorridge for instance.
