A busy couple of days.  Yesterday I had two diesel turns on the Ratty, which was enjoyable as usual.  The rhododendrons on Muncaster Fell are now quite spectacular, so I took a picture from near Miteside loop.  

 

Today, I had an appointment with Sister Drac, with the net result that I have a significant bruise from her hamfistedness.  Next time, I will specifically ask for another person to take my blood samples.  Then it was off to Keswick for Mrs G to go walking boot shopping, which was done successfully.  We parked a mile down Borrowdale from Keswick then had a walk to Ashness Bridge, a well known Lakeland viewpoint.  The sign from the car park said it was 1 mile, 45 minutes to Ashness, then five minutes later another sign said 1 mile, 1 hour!  In reality it took us 35 minutes.  Just to show the view, I took another picture, showing a little of Derwentwater, with Skiddaw in the background, and Ashness Bridge in the foreground.

Game..umpired. Yorkshire Ridings beat Durham and Northumberland. Tea, 3xcellent (her indoors ate "my" piece of cream cake then ate "her" piece of carrot cake. 

Black sheep brewery were brewing today...beautiful aromas!

As the cricketers get older the pace of the game slows down..but having played for years they know all the tricks and flick shots.

 

They managed to bowl 45 overs in about 2 hours 40 minutes. Just wish the younger players could do the same!

Another University game tomorrow  at the "Field of Dreams" aka Kirkstall Educational CC.

 

Good news about Sandy. Hopefully Debs'operation will be a successful one.

A lovely set of photos Simon. My late aunt lived in Keswick and ran a cub pack there for years. She was also the warden of the Scout hut that's just behind your right shoulder when you took the second picture. I took a scout troop there one weekend in the hot summer of 76. We had a fabulous time and probably the best view from ta hut doorway in the UK.

Good evening everyone 

 

Well, just like yesterday, today didn’t quite go to plan, not that there was a ever a proper plan anyway. Once I’d returned home with the shopping, during which I bought the ingredients for some soup, I made myself a muggertea. After which I then made a large batch of leek and potato soup. This nicely brought dinner time and after dinner, as originally planned I made a dozen red velvet cupcakes, which I’ll decorate tomorrow. 

 

However, whilst out shopping I did manage to top up my beer supplies and I’m happy to say that they are now at a more respectable level.

 

No actual work was done on re planning the model railway plan, but a couple of ideas have come to mind and all I need to do is to work out if I can get all of them into the space available. I suspect that a fair bit of compromising, as is always the case, will have to take place, but I am hopeful.

The same flight had three different flight numbers - I think with Delta, Virgin Atlantic and KLM.

Busy few days at work since I last  checked in properly.

 

I showed Mrs NB the destruction at Stamford Ex and she was truly shocked. She knows what the hobby means to me and how it would have affected me, never mind others. A donation to the just giving fund was duly donated.

 

Last Friday evening was a fun golf competition - Foxes and Rabbits - the fox golfer plays to the green and then the non-golfer rabbit putts out. 

Various prizes are awarded. The overall lowest combined score (using the normal golf handicapping system) went to another couple we were playing with, but the top prize is for the "rabbit" that takes the lowest number of putts. My guest picked that one up with 15 putts over 9 holes. (That's equivalent to 3 under par for the 9).

 

Two tonnes of topsoil arrived yesterday. Instead of leaving it at the side of the drive on either next door neighbour's gardens (as arranged), they dropped it on the driveway so we have no off-road parking until I barrow it to the back garden. Threes short sessions as time has allowed and I'm over halfway there. A suitable nightcap is being consumed after shifting a few barrowloads upon returning from the MRC tonight.

 

League golf again Thursday at the start of a 3-day break. Away game at Turton near Bolton. A course I've only played twice before but has a few holes that suit my game. Hoping for a good result after going close for two years. Then they leave our league next  year as they have entered into another league with many more fixtures.

 

Just over 6 months ago, Junior NB moved out to share the rent on a house with her friend. The "experiment" is now over and I will be borrowing the works van to move her back home. In the next few days, I have to make space in our garage for some of the stuff that she acquired for her abode............. So that's day 2 sorted.

 

Day 3  of the break is nephew's wedding at wife's workplace. Mrs and Junior NB will be taking the day off. I will be advising my work colleagues that I may be in late Sunday morning...............

 

A word of warning for BRM readers - have your sunglasses ready for the issue that comes out on Thursday...................

Good morning one and all.  Let us all rejoice at the good news from John and Sandy.

 

I’m up early because there was no point in lying in bed any longer trying to grab a few minutes’ sleep.  The probable explanation for my not sleeping is that I am in the doghouse with Harry because he discovered that I have been looking at his Facebook profile after he had asked me not to.  Where could be the harm?  Anyone would think that he had something to hide - like the day he got out of bed at 9.39 pm after a night out!  Whatever the answer, we will never know because he has now deleted everything except the photo of him standing on a salt lake in Bolivia.  In doing so he has destroyed what was by any measure a fascinating social history.  The lesson must be, surely, that if you do not want people to know what you have been doing, don’t put it on Facebook for all the world to see!

 

It must be summer, because yesterday I bought the makings of a salad on the fodder run.  Sadly the deli counter is no longer there but this did not stop me finding a slice of gala pie and a pot of potato salad to complement the staples of lettuce, cucumber, beetroot and tomato.  I have yet to try quinoa, which I see that ‘Spoons include in some of their salads.  I had never heard of it when a friend first told me about it and thought it was a Pacific island rather than a type of grain.  Later I had about half an hour in the garden and pretty well despatched the nettles.  There was no sign of the supervisory robin but there was a black and white moggy that I had not seen before.  I fear the worst.

 

Today I will brave the X5 bus to Cambridge for the beer festival with two friends.  The festival chucks us out at 3 pm, so we will go into the city for some record shopping.  It is on days like this that I have trouble recalling what is already in my collection but the shop can be full of surprises, even for someone with off the wall taste like mine.  The discovery that Russ Conway was top of the charts 50 years ago with “Side Saddle” set off a train of thought.  No, surely not?!  Let’s see what happens.   Perhaps I will sleep on the bus home.

It is a rather grey morning in this part of the world.  It was raining earlier, but seems to have stopped.  The forecast is for brighter weather as the week goes on.

A cockwomble in a BMW this morning Arrive at NDR roundabout to turn right ... no indicators..

Cuts corner onto roundabout entry causing transit van to take avoiding action.

Half way round round about turn on right indicator... and turns left.

Turns into right hand lane lane with nothing in the left,

Accelerates slowly so I can keep up with him in an old Kia.

Occasionally makes jerky course direction changes

Stays in middle lane but slowly approaching roundabout , as I overtake on gentle braking to turn left.

Where he went after that I have no idea, but as long as it's not near me I'll be happy..

 

Time to go measure some shunts..

Been up all night head scratching and pouring over maps.....

 

Was due to sail to Santander Sunday with three retired Blackrats for a trip through the Pyrenees and France on the bikes.......apparently Brittany Ferries have cancelled the crossing but not bothered to tell anyone.

 

Hotels booked, deposits paid and other ferries already full ( half term plus D Day 75?).

 

More head scratching this morning and I think and quite a few calls to be made.

Good morning all,

John, great news about Sandy and long may it continue.

The sun is trying to make an appearance and it should be a mainly fine day although there is the chance of one or two light showers later.

Window fitting proceeds and two more were done yesterday.  Today will see the turn of the back bedroom and the hall. The latter may be fun as that is where the telephone line comes in.  If I lose contact you will know what has happened. Window fitter Graham has told me not to worry and so far he and his  oppo Tom have been doing a great job.  Graham's been working for the firm for over 30 years and they put our original windows in so there is a chance that he fitted them but, like me,  can't remember. They are a very popular local firm and do many of the houses in this area.

I keep wandering down to the shed looking for inspiration but so far it is eluding me. I should at least be lifting the old track but can't keep away from the house for too long. It's not helped by Mr. Left Knee giving considerable grief at the  moment. This is a bit worrying as I will at some time need to clamber ladders and paint around the new pebbledashing where the  windows have gone in. There is very minimal damage but it does show. The Boss has kindly pointed out that there  is no rush, it's not as though we're working to a deadline.

Talking of Herself, time to offer tea.

Our "Phileas Fogg" correspondent currently in the adjacent state to my right may be building snowmen but there's not a lot of suitable material for that sort of thing around here. It peaked out at 22C here today.

 

After a considerable amount of faffing around I finally managed to successfully port a little assembler program I wrote a while ago for a ATtiny44a to a Arduino Mega2560 board. Those familiar with the occult arts might ask why in this day and age I'm using assembly language. That's because the application is real-time I/0 intensive and I'd still have to embed a lot of assembler code even if I used a higher level language.

Morning, weather bright and yesterday went according to plan - first time for a long time! After that significant erection, I do not expect to get another for many moons . Post the normal gentlemanly morning routines I shall be departing northwestwards to do another round of the G word and return in time to clean the vehicle booked for its MoT tomorrow. Whilst some would question the sanity of cleaning a car before it goes to the spanner-wielders (or the electronic equivalent today) it is something I have always done as it suggests that I care for my wheels.

Fish man had some lovely black bream yesterday, quickly fried to give a crisp skin, it went down a treat on a bed of sesame coated noodles with stir-fried sliced capsicums, ginger, garlic, shallot and asparagus stalks. SWMBO limited herself to a fillet of sole, Jersey potatoes and peas :-). I have a kipper for lunch tomorrow too and a whole crab to prepare for a salad tomorrow evening. Normally Thursday evenings would be interrupted by The Boss and her requirements for the village Table Tennis activities but tomorrow the village hall is booked for some dubious electoral purpose.

Nice to hear a positive story from John of Coombe Barton, good wishes to you all and others facing tribulations, wonky parts or just the results of previous self imposed abuses.

Good morning everyone 

 

It’s a bit of a dull day, with evidence that it’s rained overnight. Breakfast has now been consumed and I’ll set off shortly to the big orange DIY shed for a small bag of mortar and a few bits of wood for the cellar. On my way home I’ll call at the butchers and collect the steak and ale pies I ordered last week for tonight’s tea. 

 

After dinner I’ll decorate the cakes I made yesterday and then potter about for the rest of the day. We have Ava, Evie and Max coming round for tea tonight, I hope we don’t get the same performance from Max as we did last week.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. First of all best wishes to Debs and Sandy and any other ailing ER's. Inspected the bottom of the garden, the brambles are back. Not a surprise as they come through from an adjacent property that is rented and frequently changes tenants. I shall have to finish emptying the old shed and remove it to get better access. I mentioned that my (not so) old house in Romford is being demolished to make way for blocks of flats. The Romford signal box was quite literally at the bottom of the garden, perched on the embankment. I can't help wondering if the Japanese knotweed that used to come through from the embankment has been dealt with. One of the last things I did before I moved was too cut the stuff down to about six inches and fill the hollow stalks with rock salt. This was effective within my own garden but there were still some on the embankment.

Greetings all from the boring borough. Far less stiff and dead than expected after yesterday's marathon walking session @ Chelsea. I can actually walk without too much difficulty. 

 

Little of note happening here. Just a question that I hope someone can answer. I've found 2 train based model shops in Brussels online and one further out. I'll have time to visit one. Suggestions and recommendations. 

 

Great news about Sandy. 

Hopefully we'll soon get equally good news about the Mistress of the Awl.
