Morning, 15c and sipping down.  Pah.

Plans for a toddle around the bright lights of Ramsey foiled, the lights are soggy.  Then phoned bike parts company as their website is on the fritz when trying to order last night and this morning - phone message plays that they are closed weekends. Pah again.  Mrs NHN off to be Pilated, having left instructions to do phone stuff for insurance quotes - without leaving me any details.  Guess what - pah!  One task left to do but having a calm down on here first.

I get generic ink cartridges for our Canon Pixma something or other (a recent one) from a firm on Jersey, used them with no issues, the same in previous machines too for years.  They obviously know how to 'fix' the included chips in them.

Cynic mode:  I wonder how the 'test' of the annoying video is going - the 'test' presumably being to see how many new Gold memberships it drums up? /cynic mode.

Edit:  I should add I don't mind paying to get rid of it, but not the full amount for other services I cannot access or do not want.

Usual Friday numpties on the M40 today, crossing two lanes without looking, pulling out without indicating and including the inevitable "I own the road" pratt in a Merc. furiously flashing the car in front in the outside lane  to let him through

A long time ago when I used to drive a lot between Birmingham, MK and London these tricks were common on Friday afternoon in the 60mph traffic jam. It was before speed limiters were made compulsory for lorries. The area around the NEC on the M42 was particularly bad. One day I got the last laugh on a big posh car when I was driving the office Escort. I had watched said numpty weaving lanes for several miles getting nowhere fast and recognised who it was. He wanted to get off for the posh houses round Knowle but as if by magic he got completely boxed into the fast lane at that junction and ended up coming off at the next to go back on the other side which was moving at about 20 mph. I had a sly chuckle aa I watched him join the slip road queue.

Good morning everyone

Nice to see GDB popping in again. He seems to have done much better with bathroom fitters that Mike and Sarah have done. It's all done now and they are very happy with it, but it took a lot longer than the predicted 1 week, but I'll say no more on that subject.

Up a little earlier than usual, as I'm about to go and pick up Ava for our weekly baking and model making session.

By the end of the day we will have made yet another tray of rocky road and hopefully a bit more of the engine shed.

Back later.

Brian

Tea break!  Job going very slowly.  Ancient doors which TBH have seen better days but I shall persevere.  Doesn't help that these were panelled doors that have been filled in by the old boy who lived here many years ago.   My new locks are slightly larger so whilst excavating with a brand new chisel to make the hole for the lock slightly bigger I managed to discover one of the screws that he's used to do the job .  :banghead: Frabjoy as Baz would say.  They are also quite heavy and my back has taken a severe dislike to them.

Our guy Steve quoted " 2 weeks or thereabouts" and actually took 2 weeks 4 days as the removal of the tiles and the old sand and cement render and then re-plastering took a lot longer than expected.  He also took away the doors of the new vanity unit to get them replaced as he spotted a slight fault which we hadn't noticed (and probably wouldn't have!)  Top guys and a very positive review will be posted on their website and on Checkatrade later.

Better get back to it as there is a sporting event involving funny shaped balls I want to watch this afternoon.

I posed this little quiz in TNM but I'm posting it here as well.

16 minutes ago, PhilJ W said:

Seeing as we're into flags a couple of quiz questions for the Brits about Old Glory/US states.

1) How many red stripes are there on Old Glory and how many stars and what do those numbers represent.

2) Which US state has the Union Flag (Jack) incorporated in its state flag.

3) Which US state held a plebiscite as to whether they joined the US or Canada.

4) Which American state was recognized briefly as an independent state by Britain before it joined the US.

I ask our American or American based members to refrain a bit as they probably know most if not all of the answers.

Later this lead to a discussion on the future of it and the adjoining kitchen conservatory..

Result, the solid roof will be extended at the same time as the single glazed glass is replaced with double. This has been issued to me as task number 2 after retirement.

Task number 1 is the replacement of  the main conservatory, with something bigger and not rotting away..

Retirement Task number 3, is the insulation of the north ish front wall of the house.

As for bathroom refurbishment, Mr armitage and shanks has developed a couple of cracks, yours truly will be getting an identical one, to replace it as a temporary measure  before a rebuild of the entire bathroom becomes retirement task number 4..

Meanwhile SWMBO has taken a fancy to the door below, yours truly has to work out how to make it for the hole in the front of the house....

After seeing that list Bear strongly recommends not retiring.....

Afternoon All

Welcome back to GDB - great to hear from you and to get some update.

Discovered (the hard way) how many railway books not to try to put into a box before it becomes totally unliftable - and the answer is not a large one - for the benefit of my back, and that of the removal people, I'll keep it to about 20 per box - so with over 1000 books to pack, that's a lot of boxes.

All posts have been read, and some also rated - and that's the first time for months that I have been able to say that.

Generic greetings

Regards to All

Stewart

Grey is hardly new at all for mass produced cars. My parents bought new, a 1974 Holden with a white roof, chrome rain strips and a silver/grey metallic body. It looked nice when new. Metallic paint was novel in the 1970s, but this one was an early GM attempt. We lived within a few miles of salt water and the paint work deteriorated badly over time. The white roof paint held up much better.

Most of them I find very dull and exacerbated by their ubiquity. My observations were more about noticing new interpretations of grey (usually with a hint of other colours to distinguish it) that seem to be trendy.

As to Fleming's creation, the Aston Martin DB5 in the 1964 Goldfinger film was of course grey. There is a convertible Bentley early in From Russia With Love, (with car telephone) but, if memory serves, it is green.

But precisely what shade is "battleship grey"? I note that ship modelling forums seem to devote as much care and attention to that topic as people here who debate the proper shade of sage green for LSWR locomotives.*

* Or middle chrome green, or LB&SCR umber, or MR crimson lake, etc etc.

I don’t think Bond would have had any difficulty in getting the “right“ type of battleship grey for his Bentley; presumably 007 - who after all was also a Commander in the Royal Navy (in the books) - could get hold of some of the same stuff used to paint destroyers from chums of his at Portsmouth.

Following intense, but none the less delicate, diplomatic discussions between PupCam and Captain Cynical, In exchange for some - at present not disclosable - “geopolitical considerations“ from PupCam, Captain Cynical would neutralise PolyBears hidden stash of CMD (Cakes of Mass Deliciousness) - thus forcing Mr Bear to the negotiation table with Puppers (Hidden stash? Here lies Bear after a zedding session, which shall hereby be known as "Doing a Puppers" hereinafter (see what I did there?)

The Bearmobile is now gleaming after a serious wash session this morning, as are Bears' paws - if somewhat wrinkled now.

I was so pleased I thought to myself "bvgger the expense, I'll have a large chip roll and a sossie for din dins" - my plan was to visit the local village fuel station at the same time (£1-51/litre ) with a 5l can (I have a long journey coming up soon), only to discover they were shut at 11-50 (the 'net claims they're open until 1230).  Turdycurses.

Tomorrow hopes to see the BM polished & waxed....

Good afternoon all and a warm welcome back to GDB.

The Hill of Strawberries emerged from thick overnight fog in good time for us to enjoy our anniversary afternoon tea on the terrace. I even managed to scrub up a bit :jester:

I would have posted the pics but the usual iPhone vs. RMW issue means they will only show sideways.

Lord Armstrong liked battleship grey. He painted everything the company made this "colour"..cars, bridges, cranes, and even...battleships. the grey varied as it was mixed as required from black  white and another secret colour according to a very old employee at Scotswood I met many years ago..

It’s just business, I’m afraid. Nothing personal….

Puppers made me an extremely generous offer I would have been foolish to have refused.

Perhaps PolyBear would care to make a counter offer?

Welcome back GDB -watch your head  :) :jester::banghead:

Ahhh Saturday :)

POETS yesterday a success, then again why wouldn't it be ;)

Evening "Oktoberfest" get together a great success, everyone suitably nourished and imbibed.

Today, have to go slightly afar to get some concrete patch that I want to use as the local store (Home Depot) doesn't have any but their 5+ mile away branch does.

With luck will be able to patch the area around the garage door this afternoon, although I've been summoned to attend an afternoon meeting between the Mrs and Meagan (DiL) to discuss her knee surgery - I'm apparently the scribe/note taker! Why, just WHY?!?!

Later we have a local neighborhood gathering around 10+ houses/families congregating 2 doors down from us, should be fun    <hic> :drink_mini:

15 first thing, partly cloudy with a high of 25 later. Trending rather warmer than usual for October around here.

Enjoy the day.

My son has a hp printer that connects via wifi both sons laptops can print from it as can I with both phone and tablet. I pay £3 a month for the hp instant ink service ( there are cheaper rates available but it goes on volume of printing).

When it runs low on ink they mail the cartridges to you and a bag to send the old ones back.

Today is the first day I have been able to do any jobs. The post hole has been dug out or should I say broken out using my sds drill with some chisel bits as a breaker we even dug out some old brick from the gasworks that were here.

Still keeping an eye on the Mrs but she will not relax

@TheQ at least you have something to keep you going in retirement some people who have nothing to do end up dropping down dead.
