Good evening everyone 

 

I assembled both of the small drawer units I bought on Sunday, I shall take them to the workshop tomorrow and make a start on filling them up. I’m hoping that this will clear some of the work bench giving me a bit more room to work. Well, that’s the plan, but we all know how sometimes plans don’t always go as you hope they do. 

 

After dinner, I had to check the boiler as it looks as though we’ve had a bit of a leak, as the back bedroom door (which is directly below the boiler) is sticking and the wall above looks to be slightly damp. A thorough inspection revealed nothing out of the ordinary, there’s no dripping water, just a damp patch near the boiler. So, I just guess I’ll have to keep my eye on it to see if it gets any worse! I hate not finding anything wrong, I like to find something tangible, something that I can say, yes, that’s the problem and The is the solution. Not doing so just means that whatever it is causing the problem is still there and will probably just get worse, pah and double pah!

Mathematics.. or rather Pure Mathematics  is something I have always enjoyed. Applied Mathematics was a chore but I tolerated it. For some reason I decided to become an Engineer which involves a lot of Mathematics. I had s3veral excellent teachers who let me roam through the various Mathematics lessons available. At uni it was only in my finals that I had to work to understand certain aspects of Mathematics  including complex variables and lyapunov Theorums. Now they were different.. and I never needed to use lyapunovs equations/ theorums in my Engineering career.

Yes, I really should investigate more but apparently Deepevali is the South Indian festival equivalent to Diwali. The Singaporean Indian community is (or was) largely Tamil from the South and it's interesting that even someone as unfamiliar with Indian culture as I am can identify a lot of differences from what I saw in England.

I keep annoying my daughter, when she starts the usual whinging of 'why do we have to learn algebra, physics blah blah blah, we'll never use it after leaving school' I tell her that very much depends on what she does in life and that I use all that stuff almost every day at work. The boy loves maths and is doing additional maths GCSE, I think he might study maths further, he seems to have limited interest in science which seems odd given he is very good at maths and that a certain competency in maths is a key part of studying science. I found that when I did my MSc especially it could just as easily have been described as applied mathematics.

Good moaning from a rather dark Charente.   It's great to see another Tom Lehrer fan around.  

 

Well I had an afternoon looking at trains andvputting the world to rights yesterday.  I also brought 16 concrete blocks home that Andy gave me.  They will become permanent foundations for water tanks in the garden.   This morning it's timm to wind up the chainsaw to dismember the tree root that was dug out during the installation of the new fosse.  Not a lot else to report so far and it's still too dark to wake the hens up.

Good morning all,

Still dark but it's dry and a bright and breezy day with long spells of sunshine is forecast.

Thursday = Bin lorries x 3 + Sainsbury's delivery.

Along with that I have a follow up hospital appointment in Epsom to see the consultant about The Hand at 09.00.

When I return I will revisit The Shed and see what else I can find wrong.  The derailing problems from the past couple of days seem to have been fixed (for now) but you can bet your boots something else will go pear-shaped.  Hmm, just remembered that I am also required to transport Herself and her books to the charity shop.  I wonder how much she'll fetch?   🤣

Soon be time to take her a muggatea.

Ey up! It is chopin day.. I must visit Moreasons so that herself, when she returns from her week away in Brussels (in search of a mega sprout🙃) is kept in a manner to which she has become accustomed.

 

Today is.. more cricket related matters then a bit of muddling. First up.. a mugadecaff.

Good morning everyone 

 

Well, we have some sunshine here this morning in England’s northwest corner for the first In what seems like ages! 

 

Breakfast is now but a distant memory memory and I have now decamped to the dinning room whilst Sheila both finishes her breakfast and then begins getting herself ready for her Zumba class. From past experience, I know if I was still sat at the kitchen table I’d be in the way. My chauffeuring services are required and after that I will need to pick up some stuff from the pharmacy that they didn’t have on Monday. Then it’s back home, but I will need to stay indoors as I have a signed for package due either today or tomorrow, but the website doesn’t say which day it will be delivered. The item in question is a pair of replacement milled brass frames for a loco kit I’ve got. I’ve been trying to get through, (with no success) to the guys at Alan Gibson for a while now. But, by some quirk of fate, a pair came up for auction on Ebay and I was the only bidder! So they are now winging their way here and at a considerably lower price (single figure instead of double) than I would have paid too.

Ben the I want out Collie appeared at boot putting on time, he then proceeded round most of the garden having found an interesting trail right from the house, quite brave for him, as it was quite dark..

My main interest at school was history and still is.. I also liked woodwork and metal work, but my last two schools didn't do those as  subjects..

 

Of history I read a book on" King Arthur" several months ago, which mostly narrowed down the area he could possibly existed, which turned out to be in or around Bristol + about 100 miles...

 

I'm currently reading another Book on King Arthur which  concentrates on the possible dates  of his existance.. It seems to be settling on between 428 and 441 for him being busy, but I'm only halfway through this book..

Of necessity it goes into the invasions or not of Saxons, Picts, Jutes, Angles, the general situation of the nations at the time in UK and Europe.

Over recent years it's been " fashionable" to say the Saxons  ( Angles and Jutes) only came over in small numbers and weren't all that bad..  However my most recent news feed reports on a major DNA survey of graves which says Saxons and co did come over in large  numbers which makes all the old violent histories such as Bedes much more likely..

 

An odd revelation in those tests a person of partial West African descent in one grave, though related to those not of that parental line, all laid out in a similar manner.. grave goods etc.. So not a slave..

 

Of sources, most " histories" of Arthur make use of Gildas, Nennias, and even Geoffrey of Monmouth. however much of what most people "know" of Arthur is Geoffrey and even later Thomas Mallory and those two lead us to Richard Harris attempting to sing while wandering around in highly polished Nickle plate armour...

 

The Book is somewhat more serious and it's true references are from various chronicles  (the Gallic for one) letters from and to Rome . Histories of saints etc.. St Germinus visiting England / St Albans in 429 having no problems, but by the 440s a monk in the West of the England / Wales bemoaning the fact he can no longer visit St Albans shrine due to the Saxons..

 

Bede, of course never mentions Arthur, however Bede's "Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum" is that of the "English" i.e. the Angles and Saxons, He's not going to glorify the opposition..

 

 

My brother is still testing positive for covid  after 18 days.. The hospital he has his cancer treatment, had already set up an area for covid carrying patients, so he can continue treatment and so far the results are encouraging. He's not unwell from the covid and is working from home. Pretty pictures later, of his cat trying to stop him WFH.

 

I've around ten  10GOhm resistors to measure.. That will keep me busy for most of the day..

 

Time to sit still and wait for the next measurement to settle.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. BIN day again today. Also its the first week of food waste bins, the council distributed the bins over the last month. The bins themselves are 'locked' by positioning the carrying handle upright, at least one neighbour has put the handle down and the foxes have had a field day. Not much sleep last night thanks to Arthur Itis and the Nurofen took its time kicking in so after my bath this morning eyelid inspection will take place. Just looked out and the food waste and the pink sacks have been collected, the pink sacks by a brand new smaller bin wagon.

Morning all 

A slower start this morning just finishing my muggadecaf. Whilst reading a certain magazine. (No not one of those magazines)

I hated maths at school but when I went to uni and did surveying it just clicked. Speed time distance calculation was also part of my CPC course for road haulage.

I have managed to book my flu jab for the same time as my covid booster. This is not being done at the Drs

I should have got my bus pass today but that will have to wait another year and who knows, possibly longer the way things are going. I get the feeling that nothing is off the table at the moment.

In Sydney the cockatoos are teaching each other how to open bins.

Its apparently a rare case of animals identifiably  passing on learned behaviour  to each other  so theres a  scientific study of it.

 

 

It hasn't spread this far yet but last week one of the cockies must have pegged that the plastic tub of plant food that was out in the deck was similar to the plastic tub we bring out with  the almonds in to feed them because the lid had been peeled off and the contents scattered across the deck as I guess they tested it for eatability.

Similarly a new pond pump in its box I'd put on the table got one  of the cockies attention going by the way the top has been chewed off to check the inside, it's on the table behind the cocky..

@BoD Went well it did indeed Warren, thanks.  Seen on time and Consultant pleased with both his surgical efforts and my physiotherapy efforts and has said no need to see me anymore unless I develop any problems.  To that end he has given me an open appointment for the next nine months which means that if I need to see him I can just phone up and not go through GP and join a waiting list.  NHS at its best so no complaints from me.

 Phil, our food waste bins are like that and it didn't take the local foxes very long to learn how to get them open.  People have tried putting bricks on them and putting them up high on big wheelie bins and that doesn't always work.  I wedge ours and our neighbours in a triangle of no less than three big wheelies.  So far that's stopped the little b#ggers.

 

Now waiting for Sainsbury's delivery which is due from 11.00 and after that I'm taking The Boss to the charity shop.  😁
