Sorting the bits that Ive been buying to make, hopefully over Christmas - but not touched them until today. Currently trying to classify them and put them in build groups and uniting like items into the diminishing supply of boxes.

I did find a whole load of adhesive tape that's other lost it's stickness or the sickness has oozed out of the ends - that's had to go to landfill.

 

As 'Bring in the clowns' has it - maybe next year.

Afternoon Awl,

First of the new doors propped up on a 1/4 inch of ply. Top marked to frame, above that cut off.

Hinges screwed on, ply removed, door now swings ok.

 

Stopped at that as paws were complaining of the cold, into workshop where the heater had bern on for a while.

Ben's ramp sanded.

After a muggacoffee, Ben took me for his long walk,  we met a very furry young GSD on the way back. Ben was a good boy and didn't run off to play even though he wasn't on the lead. He sat when I said and then followed me.

The bridge on the unmentionable now works, it now needs prettying up.

Happy new year to everyone. Hope you made it through alright, and please do stay safe, sane and sound in these interesting times.

 

Today was mostly spent tidying up some. We had a few ideas for redecorating several rooms during our time oop narf, too. One of the first projects will be improving the lighting in the dining room, as the far end of it is far too dark.

 

Dinner will likely be cheese spätzle with sauerkraut.

A walk has been taken in blue skies with a cold, thin wind. This was a good thing. But.. with no clouds overhead why did we have rain for long enough to get us wet??

My dinner was successful, I managed not to eat too much and will also be sensible about the amount of tea I have - perhaps I roll with turkey, stuffing and sausage not 2.  The wine was part of a bottle of German Dornfelder Rose.  It was the last one so I must look for some more.  After lunch I decided to do nothing so watched Singing in the Rain.  Again it is many years since I last saw it and I had forgotten most of it so it was enjoyable.  Then I made a cup of tea and promptly fell asleep.  

 

Since waking up I've had a look at the first things to get rid off and have decided what I will use the cleared space for.  That might help me actually get on with the job.  I may start as early as tomorrow as I shall not be going out until the afternoon to see the podiatrist.  When I go I must remember to take his belated Christmas bottle of whisky with me.

 

The rest of today will be the quizzes on TV plus anything else I may find to watch, otherwise I will once again read.

 

It has been fine all day so I was able to turn off the lights for a while, it makes a nice change.  It has been so dull lately.  During the day I remembered to finish the Asda order for tomorrow morning - I wonder how many things will be out of stock?

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Still haven't finished sorting out the boxes in the utility room but I'm getting there. Just had dinner, beef stew and dumplings, probably have a couple of mince pies for dessert.

Had a wander on our local beach as it was sunny though cold, we often do this, before covid we were often on the beach on our own winter or summer, today I reckon there was at least a 100 folk there, good that they are getting out and about.

Tippin' it down here but that hasn't stopped some people letting off fireworks.

Lazy sort of day reading and looking at photos in the new book, the pics are superb and the only criticism I could make is that the captions are in grey on a black background which do not make for easy reading.  However as the main point of the book is the photos that is not the end of the world.

Spent a bit of time watching some recorded rugby and also observing The Boss in removing the decorations mode.  She's not happy because I've just told her that I won't be visiting the loft for the boxes or helping her tomorrow.  My help is needed because she won't go up in the loft and I can at least put all the lights away neatly so that when it comes to next year they can be got out without being all tangled up.  Tomorrow has been designated a Shed day, there are toys that need to be played with as they have been neglected over the past couple of weeks.

Just surrounded a nice gammon steak with some roast potatoes and peas accompanied by  a glass of Jam Shed Malbec,  Another glass has just been poured.  Later on I may sample some cognac or one of my Christmas present malts.

Many friends and family will be returning to work tomorrow.  I feel very lucky that it is now 20 years that I've had to do that as Jan 31st will mark the 20th anniversary of my retirement.  That might be worth raising a glass for as well!

Our roast duck was preceeded by homemade chicken liver  Patė and followed by Jelly and cream.  I believe that there are some Christmas's cake things to tuck into for supper.

We had a walk up Glen Helen as planned - second time in a week. There was a lot more water coming down after the rain yesterday, it was nice all day here but it is now (2015) hoying it down and once again blowing a hoolie.

Whilst I was vacuuming the stairs, Sheila asked if I’d do the living room and dining room as well, so a few extra brownie points were earned. Earlier today, when I mentioned the number of stairs we have in the house, I got the number wrong, there are actually 33, plus another 7 that head down to the cellar, making a total of 40. Of these, 31 and all the landings are carpeted, the 2 stairs in the hallway that lead down to the kitchen, the hallway and the cellar stairs are all varnished. 

 

By late afternoon, early evening the blue skies had gone and we once again got some rain, oh hum. 

 

We are both having a very early night, as we need to be up very early tomorrow morning. I’ll be getting up at around 5:30 to have my breakfast, Sheila will follow me downstairs a little later. Sheila has to be at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital for 7:30, so the plan is to leave around 6:30 (hence my 5:30 rise) to get there in plenty of time. Once she has been admitted, I’ll return home and get on with a couple of jobs, which I’d really like to get done before Sheila comes home (which will hopefully be tomorrow Wednesday, if all goes well) when all such work will temporarily cease. I’m not sure I’ll have time to look in before we set off for the hospital, so I’ll probably do so when I get back home.

Happy New Year to one and all with special best wishes to all those ERs who are feeling "Below Par" for whatever reason.

 

A quiet NYE was had apart from some of the local muppets re-enacting the Somme on and off from about 10:00pm onwards.

 

New Years Day morning saw Mr & Mrs P venture over to Stony Stratford to visit friends.  The intention being Puppers and Mr Friend would then go and visit the traditional Stony Classic Vehicle Meet which is in fact precisely what we did.     This event seems to get bigger and bigger each time and there were some very nice 4 wheel & 2 wheel vehicles on display.  There was even a Bond Bug on display which of course falls into neither category 🤣 .  My neighbour and other Sunday Morning ride out friends went over "Sur leurs motos" but Mrs P's pillion days are far behind us so, we went in the car and I bumped into my mates whilst staggering round.

 

One thing that we've noticed at this gathering is how starting at ~12:30 a trickle of exhibitors leaving quickly becomes a torrent and quite soon there's hardly anything left!*     It's so big now that because of that you don't get to see half the stuff that turned up unless you just sweep round without stopping to study and admire.    

 

*  To be entirely fair; it's  a free show so visitors aren't actually being fleeced, it's just annoying that in all probability you'll miss quite a few really interesting vehicles

 

As I say, it's a bit annoying it reminds me of my involvement with the CMRA exhibition over all those years (other exhibitions are available and I suspect no different) when, on the Sunday, some exhibitors and traders would start packing up half way through the afternoon whilst paying customers were still arriving at the door!    Whilst for large exhibits it was perfectly acceptable and understandable for some of the surplus and scene setting stock to be surreptitiously removed and packed away in readiness for the off having a denuded layout with but one DMU left shuffling about or a trade stand (no names, no pact drill and all that) with just a trail of debris at ~3:00pm certainly wasn't.   Still, no longer a concern and therefore a pet hate for me now.

 

Nothing further to report so far this year but then, it's early days yet!

Back in Milton Keynes, we were lucky in having a clear run up the M1/M6 to Carlisle and back South, no hold ups or delays. I took the risk of trusting the time information displays on the M6 and went by the regular M6 rather than the toll road and went through Birmingham with no delays other than slowing down for the 50mph road works areas so saved a few quid.

 

Quite sad, I'm a rail enthusiast and love rail travel but at the moment I just can't see a good reason to play the lottery of rail travel on the WCML. I went to Carlisle station and it was chaos, this morning there was a huge fleet of rail substitution buses backed down Warwick Road in Carlisle and on the day I arrived it seemed every other train on the information board was cancelled. We made the mistake of thinking we'd use public transport last time and the nightmare experience motivated me to get a Singaporean driving license so I can hire a car. Even as a rail enthusiast and advocate of rail travel there's no way that I could recommend use of rail travel in Britain to anyone in good conscience at the moment.

 

I still find it ridiculous it's easier to hire a car with a foreign license than a British one. With a British license they demand two proofs of address dated with three months (bank statement, utility bill, council tax bill etc) and usually have a minimum period that you have held a license. My Singaporean license was issued in October, it doesn't have an address on it and I just showed my (British) passport and got a car. Not complaining about the ease of getting a car with a foreign license, just find it crazy that it's so much easier.

The Americans then reversed it with the F16 offering the pilot a 30 degree seated angle which was double the normal seated angle leading to better g-force tolerance and improved visibility.

Watched the whole of the postmaster saga tonight and found it a rather difficult watch.  Not surprised to see that compensation is still. not appropriately around.

 

Other than that, have at last completed the loft insulation and also managed to make a few boards that at some time will feature things that run on parallel strips of metal.  Was then able to spend a few days with the club helping to get a rather large seaside town layout into an exhibition state - great fun was had by all.
