The Distant (Signal) West  has been cleaned to within an inch of its life.  Shiny bits sparkle.  Ordinary bits shine.  Job done then.  

 

I'm still paying £1.36/litre for motion lotion and took the opportunity to fill the tank today whilst in town.  I don't wish to be held hostage to price gouging on account of some shooty Houthi thank you very much.  

 

Dr. SWMBO's train is on time - which is a very rare phenomenon - meaning my Friday night is about to be interrupted in order to bring her the last 8 miles of her 320 mile journey home from work.  

 

And then it will be time for sleep followed by the weekend.  Yayyy.

Been a bit of a funny old week. Traffic seems to be very light. Not certain if that's due to no schools, everybody on holiday, working from home or a combination of all. Hasn't improved the standard of driving with plenty of jumped lights and the obligatory ninety mile an hour fanatics. Still funny sort of 'damp blanket' on everything.

Petrol here hovering between £1.36 and £1.38.

Humidity is the killer in terms of climate comfort. You can go up to pretty high temperatures if it is a dry heat and cope (noting that heat stroke is a risk at a certain point regardless of humidity, as well as the risk of UV) but even quite modest temperatures can feel awful with high humidity. When arriving at airports it can be like walking into a wall, especially if coming from a cold point of departure. Singapore really isn't a hot country, it is permanently warm (a nice 'cool' temp is mid 20's), it tends to be high 20's to low 30's which is warm but it's not especially hot but the humidity is pervasive and takes a lot of acclimatising to. Something that makes a massive difference (apart from air conditioning......) is wind. If the air is still it can be verging on unbearable to take a walk outside air conditioned malls and linkways, whereas with a light breeze it can be surprisingly pleasant. Not a full on wind, just a light breeze is transformative, it reminds me of the famous 'Fremantle Doctor'.

Yes, though SW WA is more "Mediterranean" than many parts of Australia. Summer humidity in Perth is around 40%.

The forecast was winter storm warning Friday evening, blizzard warning Saturday. Near 6:00 it started snowing. There's now a prediction for a bit of rain around midnight.

Where's that warmer less cold air coming from? The middle of the continent has a deep incursion of arctic air. It is -4°C here. The day was dry. Snow is still forecast for tomorrow, but 30 miles or so south will have freezing rain. It's not clear where that changes to snow.

 

There are blizzard warnings for the Columbia River gorge tomorrow.

In the 45 minutes since I posted this, the temperature on my patio has dropped to -5°C. Various devices suggest the temperature where I am is closer to -6°C.

 

Whatever it is, it is cold, and so far, still dry.

Interesting reading  @PupCam's discourse about the menusthat have to be navigated on phone help lines.  I detest them as well.  I scored a major victory recently by managing to navigate the Orange(telephones) system in French.  It was outside the hours for the English speaking helpline and it only took me three goes to get through to the correct place one Saturday evening.  By some miracle a technician even appeared on the Monday morning.  You can't ask the machine to speak slowly.

 

Anyway it's cold here,  cake was eaten yesterday.  This morning it's time to talk to the girls and see what pearls of wisdom young Emily drops into the conversation.  Then I'm off to Niort to collect the new sofa, which is ready a fortnight earlier than we expected.  A friend is coming up after lunch to help me unload it and get the various pieces into position. Stew and dumplings  are being prepared for this evening. 

 

Good wishes to @grandadbob.  I'm glad that you are recovering well.  @BSW01 Brian, I hope that you and Sheila are OK.  Also thoughts towards our furry friend from the Polar regions.

I can handle dry heat.. high humidity makes me uncomfortable but no worries. I much rather be warm than cold.

 

Today will include... not a lit as my slop chit for must do items has not yet appeared.... great.

 

I might get some muddling done..

Good morning all,

It's now light(ish) outside and the sky seems to be somewhat grey.  It will probably stay rather cloudy today although there is the chance of some brighter spells along with the odd spot of rain or drizzle.  1°C rising to 4°C.

I had a reasonable and comfortable night, only woke up twice.

Rugby watched and Northampton hammered Bayonne.  More matches are available today.

This morning Abbie's boyfriend James is coming round to clean the conservatory roof.  This is normally something I would do myself but am confined to doing nottalot at the moment so as not to disturb The Incision Site.  It badly needs doing as I didn't get a round tuit last year due to Ernie the 'Ernia.  I will content myself with "supervising."

Abbie is bringing  James here and then she's taking The Boss out along with Nicki and Gemma to go on a shopping expedition.  Nicki is getting remarried later this year and it seem the ladies need to go and look at/order/buy some clothes for the occasion.  They may be gone for some time.

Time to gettamoveonslowly.

Mooring Awl,

4.5 hours sleep followed by 3 hours semi dozing. 

 

Ben the I want out Collie was a bit early, I asked him to go back to bed and he did. Eventually I needed to get up and took him out. He just had a normal patrol on a dull grey day, practically no wind, temperature of +2C oh it's dropped to +1C forecast max temperature +4C

We have a west south westerly at the moment.

 

Plans for today,

Coat of paint number 2 for mast step. But in the cold, I suspect coat 1 might not have set, so it might just come into the house for a warm up.

Clean up and sand the centre console.

Muddling.

Quite a good night's sleep with two interruptions, I got back to sleep quite easily after each of them.  I am now up and breakfasted.

 

The first job is a small amount of shopping, probably in Lidl, then some fresh air, possibly at the park as the beach car park will be full, it is park run morning.

 

After that probably look at old photos, lunch and model stuff.  Not much standing as that hurts.

Good morning everyone 

 

Only just finished breakfast, after both of us having a much needed lie-in. Sheila is now starting to do small domestic tasks, but only those that don’t require bending, heavy lifting or that may create dust, but she is feeling fine in herself, just very frustrated at not being able to do what she normally does. I spent most of yesterday just sitting round waiting for my scan, so plenty of reading was managed, yesterday’s choice was ‘Rambling Man my life on the roads by Billy Connolly, which is very entertaining. It’s very difficult to stop myself from sniggering out loud as I’m reading it. Today is pretty much back to the usual, in that I’m doing the domestic tasks that Sheila can’t do at the moment, mainly the laundry etc. 

 

Whilst I was out yesterday, the postman delivered a letter rescheduling my CT scan, instead of 15 February, it is now 24 January, so I could have left my consultation date as it was! Anyway, I’ll leave things as they are and not bother changing it back now.

I hesitate to sully the hallowed realm of ER by bringing up the vulgar and frivolous topic of model railways, but it's been a bad few days for model railway news with the announcements from Hattons and Warley. I find it interesting how some are seeing the end of the hobby, the world and everything in this news, blaming it all on their own pet trigger issue (at the risk of making a huge assumption of my own, neither case will be mono-causal) and arriving at 2+2=28. The hobby will go on, model retailing will go on, we will still have exhibitions in some form. Both will evolve, but everything evolves and in some ways not evolving is a sign of stasis which tends to lead to decline. At the risk of sounding trite, we should show our appreciation to Hattons and those who did so much great work for the Warely show and rather than doom mongering see what the next step of evolution means for the hobby.

Misty moisty sortaday. 5.2C - warmer than yesterday's near 0C temp.

 

First off, good wishes to those undergoing, waiting for, or recovering from treatment.

 

Notalot doing, so making the most of the time for my toot on the flute. Gradually making advances on playing at 30 bpm. So far, I am happy with the song's first line in keeping the beat and getting the sound I want out of the notes. The second line, keeping time the priority, is getting there and was a lot better after playing 7 times continuously, 6 times in a row (42 times in all!!!), but with a few short breaks in between. Another bash is on the cards after a mugadecaf. Sometimes, I envy those who find these things so easy! Still, at least I eventually get there - so far, anyway - and I do enjoy it.

 

Mugadecaf coming up.
