RMweb Premium Popular Post jjb1970 Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Saturday's hot pot lunch to celebrate the lunar New year, with beef shaba shaba and marinafed pork belly as well as pork meat balls and fish balls. The broth was spicy mala. Hot pot seems to be catching on in Britain now, if you've never tried it's worth a go.
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Good moaning from a Charente where clean clear water is appearing out of the sky. Sadly it isn't coming out of the taps as our water is off. Hope it will be fixed this morning. Beth is off to the Dr's and I'm off the The Danglies for an eye test. We had a very good afternoon at some friends yesterday. A full roast dinner with them plus there youngest daughter and her boyfriend, Hopefully the water will return to where it should be soon. At least we have plenty in storage that I can fill buckets from to flush the loos. Regards to all and of course Sundry. Jamie 2
RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted February 12 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12 (edited) Good morning all, Best wishes to Stewart for a full recovery. Dry start with some blue sky appearing along with a hint of brightness. Should stay dry with lots of sunny spells. 3°C rising to 10°C. Today's walk will be via the surgery where I am required to attend for various annual blood tests etc. Can't wait. After that nothing else planned so a visit to The Shed is a distinct possibility. Have a good one, Bob. Edited February 12 by grandadbob 7 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Hot pot means something completely different over here. Mooring Awl, 30 minutes sleep, 2 hours sleep, 1 hours sleep, 1 hours sleep, 3 hours sleep. A good total but not very satisfying with it being all broken up. Ben the I need out NOW Collie, ran out of the house to the nearest tree, before adding to the water levels considerably. He then proceeded to have a good snuffle around the garden, ground soft and soggy at the bottom but with a white crunchy topping in the sheltered areas higher up. Blue welkin, cold windless , the great fried egg is due shortly. At my first secondary school I was assessed for something, the assessor claimed to be inspecting feet but was questioning on completely different things, particularly to do with school / lesson / my interests/ etc I realized what was going on, but whether the assessment would have made any difference I've no idea, as we moved to the Hebrides very shortly after. I've never found it easy to have friends and always found myself to be an observer of people around me, rather than a joiner in. With being a moving target all my life, I've long since lost any contact with anyone from school or anyone from work life, although if there were reason I can contact people from my last job. There are people from the Sailing club I've known for 44 years, but I don't meet them socially outside of the club. Plans for today, Wedges.. I need to make some wedges, this is to stop a model radar on it's trailer heading for the floor, the model is a professionally made metal model about 2ft 6 inches long originally a sales model for Marconi. After that more muddling but 1/72 1/76 1/87 scale.. Time for breaky, porridge I think.. 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Ey up! I meet with ex Grammar School friends, and have meet ups with Uni mates and ex work mates.. must just be the way I am. @45156 I hope that your health issues are now over Stewart! Watched a bit of the Super Bowl. Shame the 49ers didn't win but such is life. Today involves not a lot b7t I may need to go to Barnsley to deliver an item which I have repaired. I need to prepare some slides for a meeting at Chester le Street later this week and do some reading prep for a Teams meeting (teams is useless.. it sort of works.. but doesn't..) Time to go and scrape the muck off and gerronwithit! Stay safe! Baz 20
iL Dottore
14 hours ago, woodenhead said: £310 for a wallet!!! Who the heck walks into John Lewis and spends that amount on a wallet? Not me, definitely not me. I could purchase a sound fitted loco for that haha £310 for a wallet? John Lewis? There are plenty of people around for whom £310 (or even £3100) is regarded as trifling, as we would regard a 5p coin as “trifling”. And as for shopping at John Lewis, it’s the equivalent of Aldi or Lidl (or even Poundland) for such. I recently saw a documentary about “luxury brands” which claimed that the people who buy these expensive things that are festooned (sometimes garishly) with makers labels (and plenty of bling) are not the really wealthy, just those with a lot, but not a significant amount, of spare cash and (of course) pop stars, sheikhs, oligarchs, and the nouveau riche. The really rich - the sort who could buy Hornby with their spare change - go for bespoke services that provide extremely high quality items made from the finest materials. I think, if I recall correctly, the example that was given in the documentary was that of what appeared to be a regular common or garden suit. Except, upon examination, the suit was shown to be made from a high quality cloth from a small woollen mill in Northern Italy that produces a limited amount of high quality cloth per year, has a multiyear waiting list and is very much in the area of “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it“ and that’s before you get to the fact that the suit is completely handmade and tailored to fit you like a glove, flatter you and wear well. The tailoring is by craftsmen who maintain a very small, very select, client list and who are paid handsomely for their efforts. Of course, the big name “luxury brands“ want to get a slice of that particular pie and do so by providing very discreet services with products not available in any of their “regular“ luxury lines; products which have, if they do have, only a very discreet logo which is usually hidden away. To maintain this most exclusive of exclusivity, access to such services is usually by invitation only (so you need to know the right people and have the right amount of funds); a bit like the Rolls-Royce stand at the Geneva Motor Show (or at least it was when I last went to the Geneva Motor Show)– access to the stand was by invitation only! After all, you don’t want the hoi polloi pawing at, and sitting on, the expensive Corinthian leather car seats, do you? Wow! That’s an impressive list of health mishaps - kudos to you for not giving in and giving up. I hope that you will continue to recover and get fighting fit again. My mother had a stroke and, like you, a will of iron - never giving up! Two years post-stroke a layman could not tell that she had had a stroke (and even I had to look hard to find the subtle tells). I hope you’ll go the same way. Anyway, welcome back to ERs (or as it is known more formally: The Forum For The Criminally Insane 😁🤣😳), we’re here to provide both a (virtual) helping hand and sympathetic shoulder! 13

RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12 Morning, from a breezy chilly 6c rock, where the sun shineth. My N gauge friend (he's very small) here - a US modeller - is the secretary of the Rolls-Royce Motor club here. I even got a go in his R-R! Some of his pals are in that social group, and by simple observation it is obvious they don't buy clothes from M&S. RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Good morning everyone Bright sunshine at the moment, but just over an hour ago it was raining! There’s not a lot on the agenda for today, although I do have to go and collect Sheila’s prescription up from the pharmacy, so I’ll also complete the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix whilst I’m out. There is also the possibility of a Waitrose trip this afternoon, but that may well be down to whether Sheila wants to go out or not. @45156 best wishes for a speedy recovery Stewart. Back later. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 12 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12 A fine bright morning, 2°C, it might reach 7° later. My share of the housework - the dusting - is done. The washing is on so now I can relax. Joanne will come at coffee time to do the rest of the house jobs, then it will be quiet for the rest of the day. I'm not sure what I will do for the rest of today. David
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted February 12 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12 Morning all. It is sunny here. I may go out and tidy the garage, or at least the end near the door. Stuff has been dumped there all winter and just needs putting away properly. I used to buy clothes from M&S but rarely now. Tony 14 1
Coombe Barton
Brtight and sunny - at least that's what woke me up. And the and appears to have dropped. However my enjoyment of it will be visual as I'm completing admin stuff ... and, unusually for me, getting stuff ready for teaching later in the term. Fortunately it's all written and only needs updating for dates and some sample data as I use current up to date data when I can. in teaching I really don't see the point of using numerically massaged examples and then expect students to tackle real world problems - subtleties are easier to recognise when presented early. I dod have one colleague some time ago who used examples of 0% return on savings, which gave students a really false picture, although mathematically correct it just didn't reflect the real world and them at all.

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Not a lot to do today so I'm taking my time, hence my lateness. RMweb Premium Popular Post 45156 Posted February 12 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 12 Morning All Many thanks for all the aupportive messages and reactions to my post yesterday - I am typing this while trying to get through to my GP where I am currently no 2nd in the queue. I have also been referred to see a diabetes specialist nurse, and have two options - the community service can offer an appointment in April, or my own DSN at a time to be advised when I get through on the phone. I suspect that it will be the practice which will get my attendance - I also want to speak to my GP about some aspects of my discharge as they were not clarified when I left hospital. 10 minutes later Got through to GP and am going there next week for a consultation re diabetes - and they can't help re discharge as the discharge letter from the hospital has not arrived. Meantime, 30747 has had to go out, as she too has a GP appointment today and will also pick up some of the shopping. It really is all go here, provided you like everything being medically related at the moment. Regards to All Stewart 5

You can be careful as anything though and the food can still take you out. Here about 5 years ago 7 people died after eating Rockmelon (cantaloupe?). The rockmelons were sold as pre-sliced halves and it turned out that despite the particular farm that they were traced back to were following and exceeding safety and cleaning guidelines, Listeria spores were borne on dust storms in the growing areas and covered the fruit skins , followed by heavy rains that turned the dust to mud, making it difficult to completely clean the skins. When the rockmelons were sliced prior to sale by the supermarkets, the Listeria was transferred to the knife blade and was deposited on the insides of the sliced melon. It definitely put a big dent in rockmelon sales for the next couple of years. Nature: if its out to get you it will, and theres NOTHING you can do about it. 2 stars.
