Hi all

Yesterday the council finally gritted our road and I got a delivery of items ordered. Now working on the oil loading platforms and sorting out the drawings for the bridge over the river and the hotel at the village end. Hope to be demonstrating the building of these at the Slate Museum show in February. Will take a few photos and post them.

Cheers

Hi Peter.

So that's two 'work in progress' at Llanberis. Camel Quay is coming on nicely with all the track work now complete and ballasted. Just need to wire it up now and fit the point motors. I don't think it's going to be finished before the exhibition but most of the structure will be there and operational. There's not much country scenic to do as most of it is a Station and Quayside. I have some RTP buildings but not right for the location but will do until I get the proper ones built. Maybe you could knock them up for me at the show!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a load of pictures ready to start a thread for this but been too busy working on the layout to get them posted. May have a go over the weekend.

Ray.

Hi All

Jamie yes catching up now that we have the car back and can get to the unit/shop.

Here are a few shots taken last night. I have all the cork laid now and am ready for today to start laying the track. one point needs to be built but will do this at the slate show.

The main oil/tar building has now had the filling platform added with all the pipework. Have done some of the drawings for the road bridge and the hotel on the corner near the bridge.

Will post shots over the weekend of the track

Hi Peter

Is it my imagination or is this layout growing in size. Looks a lot longer in the last set of pictures.

I now have a thread started for 'Camel Quay' if you want a preview, although its running a week or so behind where i am at present. Hope to catch up in the next few days.

Hi Ray

No it is still just the two boards at 8ft long. There will be the two fiddle boards one at each end which will make it 12ft overall. It could have been the shots taken in dark conditions with the flash that gives the impression of longer length.

There is some more track being laid today, will post some more photos when completed.

Hi all

Have been doing some more work on the layout whilst at the Slate Museum Show this last week but didn't take any photos as Jamie took most of them and am awaiting on him to download them.

Have now been looking at the layout and after seeing Rays layout (Camel Quay) and Jack's layout at the show I am seriously considering making Watermill Halt into a DCC layout.

I don't know much on DCC so Jamie and I have been looking at the various operating systems, but I just don't know which is the best system to use ie lenz, Bachmann, Hornby or gaugemaster.

Any advice please. Eventually I would like to have a couple of sound engines but am still not fully convinced on steam sound.

Sorry about the delay in preparing the Photo's to upload to show everyone Peters progress, below are a few from when it was on Paper in Full 1:1 Scale that Peter always does before putting his hand to any hardware to turn it into the real thing... although building he may have already started well in advance... Hope you enjoy.

I will upload of few photos over the next few days of the work and Progress of Water Mill Halt...

Hi All

Well I have been busy of late doing various items around the house so not to much has been done on the railway. All the main track work on the main scenic boards has been completed in is awaiting the fitting of the electrics but I have still not made up my mind on DC or DCC yet I was hoping that some of the members might have given some advice on this but to date no one has.

In the mean time the building that I started at the Slate show has progressed a little. It will be called the River Side Inn with the timber framed building at the end called The River Tea Rooms.

Below are a few photos of state of play to date.

Cheers

Peter

First off, I would just like to declare my admiration for this layout, looks as if this will be an excellent layout!

The ballasting is very effective and looks very good. I see that you are completly covering the track with ballast first. After this what is your method for securing the ballast in place and removing the excess ballast?

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob

What I do is first is get all the track and points cut to the correct lengths etc. and dummy lay it to check. I then next remove it, coat the area where the track will be laid with raw PVA glue, relay the track onto the glue, positioned it all correctly, hold it down with the large coloured notice board pins. As I am using SMP finescale track the sleeper depth is shallower than that on commercial normal track ie PECO, Gaugemaster. Because of this I use extra fine granite ballast. This is just poured over the track with the PVA glue underneath and pressed down. It is then left for 24 hours and I then, using a very soft bristled 4" brush, remove and brush up the surplus ballast. I then have a small hand vac which is used to get the final loose ballast up. All this ballast is sieved ready for reuse. Any areas where a little more ballast is needed or has been missed has more ballast laid and secured in position with some diluted PVA mixed with a little Fairy Liquid and applied either using a dropper or a large syringe.

After this is all done the whole track and ballast are spray painted to give the required effect. This can be seen on my other layouts listed on my thread.

At present due to a big photo shoot this next weekend for Hornby Magazine this layout has gone on the back burner for a while and am just working on buildings. No doubt my 'photographer' Jamie will be recording all of this in due course.

Hope this helps

Peter

Yes that all makes sense now and the results it produces are very good!

Thanks, Rob

Have now been looking at the layout and after seeing Rays layout (Camel Quay) and Jack's layout at the show I am seriously considering making Watermill Halt into a DCC layout.

Hi All

Referring back to Post No. 62

DCC CONTROLLERS... WHICH ONE IS BEST...!

PLEASE HELP PETER CONVERT TO DCC...

As we discussed when I was up with Peter, the choices you preferred were Bachmann or Gaugemaster as you trade mostly with these suppliers... with regards to which DCC Controller was best for you as a starter or for the Layouts you use/make...

You said you want to store a possible 200-300+ Locomotives that you have but you cannot as this is impossible due to the limitations of every DCC Controller as I said there are limitations with the Maximum Number you can Physically Storage at any one time, hence why we have what is called a Programming Track, so you can Re-Program a Locomotive with a new number that doesn’t conflict with what is already on the layout, as both will move at the same time.

The Numbers can you choose from can be anywhere between 1 and 9,999 thousand for any of your Locomotives as a valid address and these can be stored in 2 Digit Numbers or 4 Digit Numbers, but this will depend on the DCC Device you chose to purchase as not all DCC controllers can Read 4 Digit Numbers, the Physical DCC Controller Device will Only Remember so many Addresses and I have Highlighted this in RED for you in the Box Below.

Personally I would go with the Gaugemaster DCC03 as I said when we were talking about it as this as a Wireless handset as standard with the option to use more Hand Sets which can also be used either via the RJ11 Cable or another Wireless Hand Set and thus plugging in more controllers as you say GTD being the biggest layout in the club and uses up to 5 operators to run it.

With that in mind the box below should shed some light on your options.

post-5212-0-58021300-1363138748_thumb.jpg

If anyone else can help give Peter, with more advice on choosing the best DCC Controller out of the options stated above, then please comment as all other club members already use DCC Controllers.

All Peter’s Layouts have only ever been DC and would be great to eventually to move them all over to DCC... so to help him move fully over to DCC on his future Layout that he builds, please comment and give any suggestions and recommendations in your own DCC Controller experience for Peter to decide on what’s best...!
