Hi all

Well here are a few shots of the state of play on the layout as of last night. The main wiring is now complete for the bus bar and feeds. ( sods law found that I have wired over a point motor location) awaiting some plugs to carry the wires across the boards . I have at present one Class 121 with a chip in and this is working. Going to order the cobalt slow action point motors, these are cheaper than the tortoise ones so will try them on this one.

as can be seen most of the plastering has now been completed with the remainder due to be finished by weekend. Next thing to finish is the buildings and get the backscenes finished.

Hi Peter

Making excellent progress dude, wish I was there to see its progress and watch you progress onto the flocking etc. sadly we both know that will not happen, but I do look forward to seeing it working at the Llanberis show.

Look forward to many more photos you upload

Hope Wendy and you are both keeping ok.

Hi All

Well here are a few photos of the buildings to date. Having problems with my card reader so I am only able to load a few of the shots at present. Nearly all the plastering has been completed and a start made on the painting. Various small items have been completed ready to put on the layout.

The DCC side of the electrics is nearly complete with only the last point motors to fit. It is hoped the Ray will give me hand with these in the next few days. I have obtained Cobalt motors. Before the end of may it will also have fitted working signals and a working level crossing linked to the signals.

On the uncoupling side I have fitted magnets based upon Rays (Camel Quay) but I think they need some adjustment.

Hi all

The wiring on DCC I am finding is relatively simple after being shown by Ray but what I am finding is that I cannot get my head round and am getting confused is on the programming of the engines and the accessories. Finding it a bit long winded to use the hand set to change the points. On Water Mill Halt it is not too big an issue but In can understand that this could cause problems on the operational side on Glen Gillie & Loch Inch and GTD when they are converted. We are thinking of leaving the point working on Glen Gillie & Loch Inch as it is without changing.

The Class 121 chip went in straight forward and where all the comments on the site over the removal and refitting of the body taking so long it took me a matter of seconds only so I don't know if it has been altered.

The layout will be hopefully all but finished for the Llanberis show with flocking and trees and most of the buildings (I may, have not decided yet, want to put 2 further buildings on and these wouldn't be finished) but some of the finer details and little dioramas that I do most probably won't be finished.

One other feature which won't be complete is that I am making a fireless locomotive out of a L&Y Pug. Now we have gone to DCC don't know whether can get a decoder in it.

Cheers

Peter

Morning Peter, re the point changing on DCC, I stick to 16v DC and a panel now as I also found it long winded to change with the hand set.

I also had an issue where a Peco point motor stuck and that caused the Gaugemaster assessory module so catch fire, I just saw smoke coming out from under the layout, (Glen Roy) and so switched everything off pretty quickly. Luckily only a bit of chard chipboard underneath and a lump of hot smelly plastic that was once an accessory modual.

Good luck and enjoy.

Regards to all.

That's always a problem using high current devices like solenoid motors, when it goes wrong there's lots of amps flying around. The slow motion motors Peter is using only consume a few mA and if one was to fail it would just trip his NCE PowerCab.

He also has the option of using NCE macros to set up a complete route (up to 8 turnouts) with just the push of a button.

Ray.

Hi All

Well all the points are now working but I would love it  Ray if you can show me how to work them via Macros to set up the points (plead plead). Electronics have never been my strong point, failed it in my finals in 1969 and still not much further forward in 2014.

Anyway thanks to ray for sorting me out on the point side.

Below are a few shots of the state of play as of this morning. Still a little work to complete on the buildings before flocking starts.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter,

Dropped off 3 of your locos with Wendy at work this evening all fitted with decoders and tested. They all still have the default decoder address of 3 so you'll have to change them to whatever system suits you best.

I think they were the class 37, MLV and Dukedog.

I still have the 08 and 43xx to do but I'm not sure if the decoders I picked up from you will fit. I'll have another look tomorrow and let you know, I have a few smaller decoders that might do.

Next time I'm over I'll run through the Macro set up with you.

If you need a reminder on how to change the decoder addresses just shout.

Ray.

Hi Ray

Wendy brought them home last night. Many thanks for that. I also thought that I was going to be able to get you to fit all the stock  as I was told that I had won on the lotto but when I checked it was just £3 so it will have to wait.

Will give it a try on the programming of them. The NCE reference manual is not very easy to understand if you are a newcomer to DCC..It would be great if you could e.mail me a set of step by step instructions like you did on the points , they were so easy to follow.

Thanks again

Peter

Hi all

Well the track has all been sprayed now and the whole layout has been working under DCC control. Most of the painting has been completed on both the buildings and the scenery. The tar works has sofar taken about 8 hours to paint it. Next time I will paint it has I build it. Anyway here are a few shots.

Hi All

Below are a few shots of the state of play as of this morning. There will be two more buildings that I am going to make for the layout. Don't know if these will be finished  in time for the show . Will most likely end up making them at the show. Hoping this week -end to finish the legs and the fiddle boards. Then fit the back sheets and finish the flocking. Next major job is the construction of the trees. Then the finish fitting of the Kadee's  to the stock.

In placed on the layout by the bridge. It has inside the people sitting at tables, just needs the light fitting  and the hanging signs and baskets. These will be made from the outside of the Acid containers by merit.

What are you going to do for the backscene Peter?

Thought that you would want to get that underway before getting too far with the scenic work and placement of the buildings as getting to the backscene afterwards will be diffilcut and run the risk of damaging the fine work that you have already done ....

Hi Mudmagnet

The backscene is Gaugemaster and is now in place (see shots Below) most of the main buildings have not yet been place in permanite.but now the backscene is in place these will be completed in the next few days. It is now most of the small detail work to be done , which really is never complete you always find something else to add to the layout. At present am making the hanging baskets for around the hotel.

The fiddle yard boards are now in hand but have run out of backflap hinges and casement clips so cannot aline  them to the main layout.

Any way here are a few shots as of last night.

Hi All

Spent most of the day making trees for the layout on the Demo stand. Carwyn was operating the layout. Sods law the bulb blow in the River side Tea Rooms so no one could see inside and see the table and chairs and people  as well as the upstairs stained glass windows. Taking a new one down tomorrow to refit it. I also left my camera at home silly me.

Hi All

Well it was a great four days at the show  apart for the weather on the last day It p........ it down. The layout under Carwyn performed well, a few small problems on two points sticking just needs a slight adjustment. Made  a good many trees and managed to get them onto the layout as well as the hanging baskets around the tea rooms and hotel ( lost one on the way home or at the show ). Next step is to get some of the engines sound fitted. and more of the stock fitted with Kadee's.

I have seen on I think it was U Tube a magnet that is north south about 25mm -30 mm long about 5 mm wide and 1.5-2mm thick that when installed looks like a sleeper and uncouples the Kadee's great. Cannot now find it. to ask who's magnets they are. Dose any one know? Would be gratefull  for any information. I have had one quote from a magnet firm of nearly £100 for just 10 magnets .

Any way below a few shots of the show and layout.

Looks very nice Peter, Bertie seems quite at home playing Trains / Guard Dog, does he have a good GROWL when kids touch the Layout? hahha

Re the Magnets, I have used the Kadee between the tracks Magnets that can be fitted after the track is laid as on Glen Roy, and looks a bit like a barrow crossing, and I have also got some large O Gauge ones, about 2 inches x 1.5 inches that can go under the ballast and sleepers and is really powerful.

Hope that helps mate.

All the best to you all.

Hi All

We are at the Welsh Slate Museum show on the 19th, to 22th Feb at Llanberis  with Water Mill Halt  plus my demo stand. In the last 18 months with the passing away of Dave and Gerry and the the moveing due to work of Sruart to Scotland we have lost three operators so if there is anybody out there local who would like to operate the layout over the time period please PM me. The show times are 10,00 till 4.00 each day plus lunch.
