Mine arrived this morning and a very good issue, All three layouts featured have something to offer. However has the mag lost its graphic artist as all three layouts show an overall shot (and unfortunately not all the track can be seen) instead of a track plan? I'm afraid I do like to see a track plan. That apart a very enjoyable read.

I agree entirely with this. The featured layouts are all very good, and "how to" articles are up to their usual quality (I found the signalling article particularly interesting). I'm also looking forward to building the free card kit. But, while having an overview photo of the featured layouts is nice (one of the things that magazine articles can often do is give a false idea of the size and shape of a layout when only close-ups are shown, and an overview helps to correct that), I do like to see a track plan. Apart from being useful for placing the close-up photos into position better than an overview, it's also really useful to see how other people have used a space that may be similar to what I've got to work with.

I'm finding it a nice read although several of the articles aren't really my sort of thing (but that is bound to happen with a magazine aiming at a spectrum of modellers) and I must say that the review of semaphore signal models, at least in the modelling area, is a big improvement on last month's colour light effort.

But one question - according to Chris's article the first flight of the GWRAS from South Wales to Devon took place on 11 April 1933 whereas this 'first day cover' (albeit an unofficial one, but duly date stamped; and not carrying a GWR Air Mail stamp - they seemingly appeared a little later as stamp No.867 was used on 22 May ) is dated for the 12th.

Yep, me too, I like to see a track plan. I was trying to work out whether the Westbury Cement layout had a run round loop to release the loco from the front of the train; the short section between the crossovers shown on page 32 doesn't appear long enough. The overview pic is a good idea but ought be in addition to a track plan IMO.

Other than that an enjoyable and good issue.

I think it relies on an 08 or such to release the train loco - it's all DCC so nice and easy. Steve is on this forum so I'm sure he'll advise accordingly in due course. Top layout. I have still yet to see the mag, but I have all the snaps in front of me here.

Sorry about the lack of track plans. Our artist was signed off, long term sick, at a stage in the process where we couldn't make alternative arrangements. The track plans will return as soon as we can make alternative arrangements.

That's fair enough, obviously there's not a lot you can do under those circumstances. Saying that I'm glad that's the reason sounds a bit dodgy, as it makes it seem as if I'm glad that someone is ill, which I'm not. But I am glad that it's not an editorial decision.

Just give me a shout next time Chris:

You've omitted the obligatory missing crossover, always spotted by one of our colleagues!

In my engineering drawing classes at school (in the good old days before CDT) I was known by the teacher as 'tram lines Leigh' because of the number of times my ruler slipped and I ended up with a double line. That skill would be quite useful now....

I haven't read it fully yet but have noticed that unfortunately the Signal SuperTest is incomplete and contains a few errors. Lochgorm Kits do some Highland Railway parts, Michael Clark (Masokits) does some GWR parts as does Scale Link. There are also some LSWR parts available from Southwark Bridge Models. As I see it also covers 7mm scale, Scale Signal Supply Co do parts and kits too.

Also some of the prices quoted (mine) are a bit out of date.

I think that its general release date is today (24th) so that will be why. Subscribers get it early.

My village shop will probably have it in March then! The local Distrbuters (Menzies, happy to name as I have so many examples of their poor service!) never seem to have the magazines I get to the shop on the correct day. But I want to use the shop so I don't live in 'another village which used to have a shop'.

Chris,

Obviously wish your artist a full recovery.

One observation about the layout overview photos - the orange arrows showing the viewpoint of the close ups were quite overwhelming on Westbury Cement and spoil an otherwise nice photo.

And dare I say it they are unnecessary on a small layout where it is fairly obvious where the close ups are depicting?

Looking forward to reading the mag as ever and thanks once again for putting it together.

I actually didn't mind the overview pictures as they gave a view of the whole layout which is something that helps visualise where everything is in relation to everything else better than a plan (which have sometimes contained minor errors in the position of trackwork and buildings).

The article on the Westbury cement works was brilliant. I was very impressed in the use of the photographs for the backscene, including the picture of the real rail lines disappearing into the distance. The signals feature too was very good as this seems to be the one area where RTR manufacturers really seem to neglect. I find it amazing that Hornby Dublo offered working semaphore (and colour light signals) out of the box in the 1950s that were fairly reasonable, if generic examples. Whereas now the only RTR products on offer are something of a backward step compared to those original HD examples.

I haven't been involved in the Supertests and I haven't spoken to GD about them, but my feeling is that, in the case of signals, they should provide coverage of ready-to-use items, supported by some coverage of major signal parts ranges. Trying to include every range that has a few signal parts in it, is going to be next to impossible. Equally, how does one compare say, an etch of signal arms with a complete working signal? I think, maybe next time we'd put a note in to the effect that 'other signals and signal parts may be available'. It was the near impossibility of providing 100% comprehensive coverage of everything that led me to abandon the Supertests several years ago. I'm glad they've been brought back but they will always have certain limitations.

I did find the orange arrows distracting overlaid on the nice overall view of Westbury. I think if you can't have a plan then overall photos are enough as you can reference the actual items in the photo which aren't always clear on plans.

I agree the supertest can't hope to cover everything but it did cover a good selection and mentioning that in the header may help slightly though I think referencing a forum, such as this that covers the UK, for further specialist info might help just as much.

I have been getting Model Rail since 1998 back when I was just 11!. I for one am glad the Supertests have made a return.

My best friend who has always been into aviation modelling is finally coming over to our hobby and my collection of Model Rail magazines had been a God send as they can explain all aspects of our hobby far better than I can and I am still learning.

Would also like to extend my best wishes to your artist Chris and hope he gets better soon. I haven't my copy yet as funds have been tight but will hopefully have it tomorrow when out grocery shopping and I can't wait! From the looks of it a great and interesting mix of topics in this issue.

I would just like to thank you for the Top Tip on alignment dowels. I have seen these before but could never quite work out how they were supposed to be fitted. Half-a-dozen step-by-step photos and a bit of helpful text made it all clear. I will be puchasing a couple of pairs for my layout.

Following on from comments re the previous issue a first radius curve appears again in the track plan - this time clearly no need for it if the adjacent Setrack point was a Streamline one like most of the others. Also in the text Modelzones 03179 is given as being a Bachmann Collectors Club model.
