Platform10
Hi, I'm new to the site and getting back to model railways after nearly 30 years. Currently building an LMS 12 wheeler to be finished in Blood and Custard. Hoping to use Halfords spray cans but looking for a good match. I've visited RAF Kinloss MRC website and seen their colour match page. Problem is, it's a bit dated now as a lot of the colours are discontinued. I've picked up a Vauxhall Carmine Red as recommended but am stuck on the "custard" part. Beige does not feature very often in cars today! So no luck finding Vauxhall Gazelle Beige, or Talbot Jonquil. I was nervous at choosing Peugeot Antelope Beige as it looked a bit dark. I must say the cap of the red I bought looks much too bright, but maybe the caps are a bad match for the paint. Any ideas or recommendations would be very welcome.
Baby Deltic
There was a thread on the old rmweb about Halfords car paint colours:My link
Platform10
Thanks, Baby Deltic, Unfortunately the thread ultimately finishes up with the list from RAF Kinloss MRC quoting the discontinued colours for BR coach stock cream, Talbot Jonquil and Vauxhall Gazelle Beige. So no further forward.
Baby Deltic
Just done a google on Vauxhall Gazelle Beige. Wilco reckon they have 61 units in stock. My link Carmine redMy link The aerosols are Hycote, not Halfords, but the paint is probably an exact colour match. Karhedron
Have a look at DavidK71's coach thread here. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/38124-building-an-n-gauge-coach-kit/ He has used Hycote Vauxhall Gazelle Beige and the result looked good. Platform10
Thanks fellas, I've never heard of Hycote colours before now, so I'll chase after some. Not sure if I wasn't looking properly but I didn't see a piccie of the finished paint job on the coach being built. I must admit to being a little cautious at the sprayed aircraft wing regarding the Gazelle Beige. It looks a bit too brown in the picture, but if gazelle Beige is what everyone reckons is the colour then so be it. Thanks for your help.
Karhedron
Alternatively if you want to stick with Halfords it seems to be available from other outlets, if not Halfords themselves. http://www.rockbottombikes.com/product/2/3726/Halfords-Vauxhall-Gazelle-Beige-Spray.html Best advice I can give is to prime a scrap bit of plasticard and then spray with your chosen shade. Once dry you can hold it up against some stock for a genuine comparison without worrying about comparitive lighting etc. The RAF Kinloss MRC list seems to be the default starting point when looking to use auto paints but it could well be worth experimenting. The best way to improve accepted wisdom is to question it. Halfords do about a dozen different shades of beige as well as some creams. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCmd?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&categoryId=165505&langId=-1&action=listrefine&constraints=teq%7C%7CColour%7C%7CBeige%7C%7Csor%7C%7CPrice%7C%7C1
coachmann
Crimson & Cream, Carmine & Cream, blood & Custard yeh.......But red and beige is a new one on me. B) Might I suggest you look for a spraycan that closely matches Howes Railmatch 312 BR cream and 311 BR crimson. staniers@junct.jpg[/email]]
Platform10
Karhedron, Words of wisdom, indeed, but I'm desperately to avoid accumulating dozens of cans of "nearly there" but with one puff out of each!! Coachmann, Unbelievably beautiful picture! This shot had me going for some time (is it real?) before realising there would always be a slight amount of dirt on the bogies unless they were just outside the paintshop. I am guessing the backgound is a photo of the real thing - or am I seriously underestimating your structures modelling?
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted June 29, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2011 Can I be cheeky and bump up this thread and ask which Halfords red[?] is suitable for BR post 1957 maroon please.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted June 29, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 29, 2011 Can I be cheeky and bump up this thread and ask which Halfords red[?] is suitable for BR post 1957 maroon please. I've tried Ford Burgundy Red on my ex LNER Horsebox and it looks OK. Tried it on my Bullion Van over Halfords Red Primer and had to strip the thing as I messed up the 'passes' and it ran; should have used an air brush and proper paint!! Having said this I'd take the advice of Coachman on whatever he uses as he gets such a fantastic finish. Geoff at Comet Models also gets a very good finish too and his 'retired' colleague Allan makes a fantastic job on his coaches (Geoff may be able to tell you Allan's secret recipe?) Might be worth noting that my information (source lost in the mists of wayback) is that Hycote are Halfords paint suppliers, so you are almost certainly right on the colours matching. Phil T. Gazza
Gents, what the best Halfords colour match for BR Blue , Warning Panel Yellow, is there a chart to show what best suits whatr railway colour
HerbertHopkins
In the past, for 'Blood and Custard', I've used 'VW Tornado Red' and 'Lada Cream' (not sure if the latter is still available though). A mate, who is old enough to remember this livery told me he thought it was pretty well spot on. Several years ago, Tony Wright suggested 'Ford Burgandy Red' as a good match for BR Maroon. I've used this ever since and think it looks about right. Hope this helps.
jwealleans
is there a chart to show what best suits whatr railway colour There's a list, if you'd refer back to post 2. Larry, Railmatch would be the ideal answer but I'm afraid I find their aerosols very prone to clog and stop working very quickly. Halfords (and Games workshop) don't suffer in the same way.
Karhedron
Can I be cheeky and bump up this thread and ask which Halfords red[?] is suitable for BR post 1957 maroon please. I used Vauxhall Burgundy Red for BR Maroon. You can see the results here. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/620/entry-6200-n-gauge-k40-full-brake-in-lined-maroon-livery-tpm-kit/ Railmatch would be the ideal answer but I'm afraid I find their aerosols very prone to clog and stop working very quickly. Halfords (and Games workshop) don't suffer in the same way. I have had similar experiences. Halfords and GW both offer better value for money than more specialised aerosols and seem less prone to clogging. Halfords seem a good compromise for those who are not sure they wish to splash out on an airbrush.
Jamie
Try as I might, I can't get an acceptable finish out of any aerosol - only Halfords primers, and then probably because they are naturally matt. However, a spray coat, rubbed back to a smooth finish and topped by a very thin brushed topcoat of the appropriate Railmatch/Precision/Humbrol enamel seems to give a good result.
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted July 8, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 8, 2011 I used Vauxhall Burgundy Red for BR Maroon. You can see the results here. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/620/entry-6200-n-gauge-k40-full-brake-in-lined-maroon-livery-tpm-kit/ Well I've gone and bought some Hycote Double Acrylic in Ford burgendy red,I had an Orion in that colour, from Amazon. Will give it a go and maybe show the results. The Hycote sprays are available in 150mls so are perfect for those who don't always model their first choice period.

Halfords (and Games workshop) don't suffer in the same way. Apologies, maybe I should have made myself clearer. I was suggesting using Howes Railmatch as a dry sample when looking for a suitable car airosil as a match. My reasons for recommending Howes No.610 LMS crimson lake is on several counts. I obtained my lake from Derby Works 40 years ago. I supplied Howes with a sample when the Railmatch colours were being formulated. The No.610 is as close a match as makes no odds to the shade applied recently to the NRM 'Crab'. The only rider I would add is the final shade depends very much on the colour of the undercoat/primer. Use red oxide, not grey.
coachmann
To add to what I said earlier, I am looking at a model coach that was sprayed with Halfords car paint some six years ago. It is within the accepted spectrum for LMS lake and has also been recommended by others on RMweb.... Halford Rover Damask Red spray paint.
Michael Delamar
the link in post 2 doesnt work, can someone tell me the best halfords shade for BR blue and Yellow ends please. im going round in circles trying to find the answer.
Dr Gerbil-Fritters
Regarding clogging, I suggest leaving the can in a sink of hot water for a few minutes before spraying - it helps the paint 'thin' and atomise better. After painting, invert the can and just shoot some propellant to clean the nozzle. I'm a big fan of auto pint rattle cans for my trains and my planes.
