Non-railway modelling

Recommended Posts

For the 1:35 diorama I'm building I wanted a bus of some sort to complete the scene but the only one that is available that would actually fit in is an Opel Blitz produced by Roden, albeit in an "early utility" format produced for the Whermacht from 1940. I actually wanted a civillian vehicle, but managed to find one of those kits for a reasonable price and had a look at it to see if it could be "doctored" in some way to make it more like a late 1930's vehicle as used by the Reichspost.  Luckilly I managed to pick up a rather good photo book on the subject at the Nene Valley Railway secondhand book stall a few years back so had some reference material to refer to!

Discarding the military attachments (externally mounted tools/jerry cans etc) the kit gives a decent base to work from and I've so far added a couple of extra vertical window pillars on the bodysides, together with some extra body trim from plastic strip to take the DRP colour scheme - which was actually rather similar to that used by Eastern Counties at that time!

There are a number of colour shots in that book of the exterior of vehicles of that era, but nothing of the interiors, but BR early crimson seems to look the part for that and the "wooden" seats will end up being painted a leather colour.....

I think the most difficult part is going to be concocting a front destination box to go above the front windows, but other items like internal light fittings will be a lot easier to produce.

The base for the 162 is finished (although I may add a couple of oil barrels).  Static grass, which was painted following techniques I've picked up on YouTube, has completed the corner.  All that is left is the panel line wash on the aircraft and it will be done.

Hot off the bench is a 1/48 Spitfire Mk1a from Eduard, a lovely kit to put together but I had a nightmare with the decals and I'm just glad to see this one done...

I would be very grateful if my friends on here would give my work a look:

Everything I have learnt about modelling, weathering etc I owe to a lot of people who use this site -

I have now exhibited locally, with more exhibitions to follow - a book and website are in the works too.

I still run my 1980s "Dent De Lion" layout in between visits to "The Asteroid Belt!"

I've thought long and hard over how to mount TB2 on the diorama I've been doing for her and TB4 (acrylic tubes up the rear engines, a post in to the rear fuselage or nose then it occurred to me that I could stick a tube up one of the four thrusters under the fuselage.

TB2 isn't quite finished yet but, due to a few, mostly self inflicted, issues with the decals, I'm going for a rather heavily weathered and beaten look, in my mind she's on a mission immediately after the episode 'Terror in New York City' where she is shot down by the US Navy.  I figure that she's repaired enough to fly again but still bares the scars of the shoot down...

Humber “Pig” Mk1.

1:48 scale 3D printed kit from eBay.  The model as printed is fairly basic with little detail.  The bull bars were fitted to the Mk2 so were not used.

I added more details using bits of plasticard and brass rod.

About to start modelling a station, in 1 to 1000.

Radar station that is, the biggest radar dish on site was 23m across so that's 23 mm.

But a person is only 2mm high!! (Being generous)

Pictures will appear when I've done something...

1:48th scale Inpact Martin-Handasyde 1911 monoplane. These first came out (there were 6 early aircraft) in  1966, around the time of the "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines" film, which I was obsessed by at the time.  They were later made by Pyro in the US and Lindberg. I originally made this when it first came out, and it somehow survived in a bag though mainly in pieces.  Thought I'd restore it, needed new struts and one of the engine cylinder blocks was missing as moulded another out of Milliput in a Blue Stuff mould.  The copper pipes were repainted using a very old tin of  Humbrol enamel. Rigging was EZ-line which works ok for me in 1:48th scale but I found fiddly in 1:72nd.

I repainted the fuselage to represent varnished natural wood but otherwise I wanted to keep it as it had originally been made, restoration rather than rebuild!

There we are, a part of pre WW1 aviation.

I remember queuing up with my Mum and sister in the street beside the Avenue Cinema in Belfast one evening back in 1978 to see the film Grease.  We had just moved to Belfast (Dad worked for Michelin) and the street was fenced off down the middle as the Grand Central Hotel next door was being used by the Army.  Vehicles like these were being prepared to go out on patrol.

Both the cinema (a real flea pit as I recall) and the hotel are long gone and the Castle Court shopping centre occupies the space today.

Cheers

Good to know; I wish I could find more 1/72 military vehicles of the post WW2 era available.  It seems easy to fill your military train with Shermans but if you want to model the 1970s it's much harder.

There were 6 in the series,  the Martin Handasyde, Avro triplane and biplane, Bristol Boxkite, Bleriot and Deperdussin.  All released in 1966.

They also had a 1930's range, and did a Gloster Gladiator, Fairey Flycatcher, Bristol Bulldog and Hawker Fury. They appear to have been released in 1968 according to Scalemates website. All these were in 1:48th scale.

Nice kits in their day.

Seeing the mention of the other kits they made, I realised I've got an unmade one of their kits for a Hawker Fury sitting up in the loft somewhere!
