Non-railway modelling

Recommended Posts

The chances of me getting back to railway modelling any time soon took another blow this morning when the postie delivered a 3D printed kit of what I believe is the best looking scifi space ship of all time, the Liberator from Blakes 7, a beautiful, sleek design and yet one that also looks mean as hell.

Got her from a seller on eBay and she'a BIG girl, 6 inch rule at the front for comparison...

and with the 1/200 scale Iowa battleship I posted earlier:

This Bandai BMW 320i Turbo has been "on the go" - though much more off than on- for about a year, but apart from the rear light clusters which I still need to fit, it's finished.  Actually it's been part built for nearly 40 years since my Uncle gave it me for Christmas.  It's probably their age which affected some of the transfers, they just wouldn't stick, but I've tried using lining tape and mixed paints I already had to create the same scheme.  It won't win any awards and the close-up are cruel to my painting, but it's all free practice.  I did find one of these kits for sale, complete and unopened, on eBay for about £50.

F-100D slowly moving towards completion. Most of the paint done, and only a few pieces left to add.

I've tried to replicate the scorched finish at the rear of the fuselage, which was a common feature of in-service F-100's.

Lots of transfers for this one to match the original, so probably a few weeks to go yet.

Kit came from Evilbay, and the seller had included a white-metal ejector seat  which is a lot more detailed than the one that came with the kit.

Quite pleased with the way this has come together so far.

I have the same Klingon kit to build. Yours is looking very nice.

Qapla'!

I'm having a run on 1/350 Trek kits at the minute having picked up the Enterprise NX01, Enterprise A with the Grissom arriving tomorrow, need to get the TOS Enterprise next...

It's going together really well.  Fit so far has been pretty much perfect and it is designed from outset to be lit.  Here's a start on lighting the front windows with no attempt, yet, at light blocking or diffusing the lights.  Since I took the photo, I've diffused the lights and the bottom row now looks like the top one...

I also have the lighting kit to add to the Klingon cruiser, so good to see your progress.

I must have posted this before (probably lost in the image crash) but here is my fully-lit 1/350 Refit1701.

I have the 1/350 TOS Enterprise to do but am waiting until I find the lighting kit at a reasonable price.

F100 slowly moving towards completion. Decals are taking a wee while to do, but about 75% there. I've had to chop them about to get the right serial numbers, which was fiddly. The Decals are from Hannants Xtradecal series, which includes a remarkable range of options for the F100 given that they left frontline service with most users around 40 years ago...

Thanks

Ken

Inevitably...the to do pile just got that little bit bigger...

Agreed, I've been waiting for a decent 1/48 Westland Sea King for a long time... it looks like a fabulous kit from the reviews I've seen.

Here's my much older 1/72nd Airfix Sea King, without doubt one of the most challenging kits I've built, because the fit of parts was so ropey...just getting it into some kind of finished state was a relief!

I think they issued a re-tooled 1/72nd model a while after I bought this one.

The review/builds on Britmodeller certainly suggest it is a fabulous kit.  No doubt, over the next few months all sorts of Xtradecals, resin and etched add-ons, and paint masks will be released just to add to the mix.

Yes, the current 1/72 Airfix kit is a step above its' predecessor - and other manufacturers' I believe.  Here's a few of my work in progress HAR.3 from that latest iteration, together with a few etched add-ons...

Thanks for the advance warning - I have the 1/72 HAR.5 amongst at least three "whirli-clopters" in the round tuit pile.

As with the large scale version, sadly much of the interior will be hidden once the fuselage is buttoned up which might focus attention on the cockpit through those large - and very clear - windows, and in getting that absolutely right.  The 1/48 version incorporates the interior as a sub-assembly, including walls, floor, bulkheads etc which is then incorporated into the fuselage.  Although there has been some discussion regarding the resultant thickness of the walls, especially where visible at the doors' edges, I think it will work well in the larger scale.

I suspect that Airfix will further develop this new tooling into more variants.  A yellow RAF air sea rescue example will certainly stand out amongst the others!!

Does your to do pile include an MV-22 Osprey?  I've been watching them over the last couple of weeks in Norfolk...most impressive...(I have a 1/72 Hasegawa example in mine)...

No V-22 as I never had anything to do with them.  One programme I worked on, they were shortlisted as a Puma replacement butdropped early on.  I still keep my eyes open for an Airfix Puma kit.

In the "needing repair (part-built, bits missing, never finished etc.) are a Scout, Navy Lynx and an MBB-105. In the not-touched yet pile is a Mk6 Sea King and a Merlin; the Mk2 upgrade was my last defence job before getting out of that world.

There's a couple of Airfix Pumas on eBay at the moment but, rarely, neither Hannants nor Kingkit have any...

The Revell HAS.6 is also highly regarded as is/are Italeri's Merlin(s) - like you, also in my pile!!

We should share stories one day...

When I lack the mojo to get on with the layout, I fall back on my old hobby of building 1:72 aircraft, mainly WW2 and those I don't remember building in my youth.

Some of my recent builds.

These P-47Ds were Academy kits. They go tother well enough and are reasonably detailed in areas like the wheel wells. Decals were appalling though, Just would not stick and no reaction to Micro-sol. New decals from Kit-World. They came in a set of two, so bought a second kit.

P-39 Bell Airacobra. Heller kit from the 1960s. Typical of it's era. Poor fitting parts, little detail inside and poorly registered decals. I have in the 'to do' pile an Arma Hobby one, which is said to be one of the best 1:72 kits for this period.

P-51D. Airfix 'new tooling' kit. What can I say, just superb. No filler needed on it, Went together like a dream. Nice, sharply printed decals that went down with the minimum of Micro-sol. Found out the other day that it is reckoned to be the best Mustang kit in this scale.

Another I never got to was a B-17, probably due to lack of space in my bedroom, I hung them from strings across the ceiling.

After reading a few reviews about the new Airfix one, I bought this B-17G.

Can't remember the last time I had a kit that shouted "Build me". The level of detail is outstanding. So far I have just built the wings. The nxt three pictures show the undercarriage housing

On order is this Hasegawa B-24J. Reckoned by many to be the best B-24 kit in ANY scale. It also fetches a premium price. Though when compared with model railway stuff, especially some of my HOn3, maybe not so bad.

Also in the stash I have a Mosquito, Tempest, Typhoon, Zero, Bf109E-4, all new tooling Airfix, the Arma P-39Q, Tamiya Fw 190 A3 a (very) old Heller Spitfire Mk XVIE, Italeri P-38. Also I have a 1:48 Academy P-38. This was sold on Amazon as 1:72. When I contacted to complain/moan/whinge, they said keep it and refunded me.

So that's mine, let's see yours. And they don't have to be WW2, but they do 1:72.

Im on holiday in the caravan at the moment and usually bring a couple of aircraft kits to make a start on. Ive got that many on the go I decided to take something else instead, something that i can get further without needing to get the paints out.
Ive got a few Heller kits built and in the stash and found them pretty good in comparison other offerings of that time.

Ive completed the Spitfire you mentioned and also the Bf108, Me109F, Me163, Yak9(?) and Zero and cant remember any  issues. In the stash I know there’s an Arado 96, an Me109K, a Bachum Natter and a Saab with a pusher prop(cant remember the type) and ,probably some more.

Problem I have is getting round to painting them so there’s usually a box full at anyone time. I know theres a Douglas Invader(Revell) NA Texan, deHaviland Hornet, Mig 15 and 17, BAC Jet Provest, Wildcat. I think I’d better leave it there!

I think that Heller were the Rolls Royce of kits at the time. I have a few in the stash. A Noratlas that I bought in the early 1980s, a 1:24 Paris bus from the same period, started, then got married, kids, divorced, back into railways. Citroen Traction in 1:24, just bought to replace one I had, but stolen by one of my brothers, together with half a dozen other 1:24 kits.
