Well I owned four MG Maestro's over an eight year period and still own a 1991 Diesel Van. Admittedly I had them all from new and got British Leyland 'works' discount on them all, apart from the first one, the dreaded twin weber 1600, the 2.0 efi's were fliers and held their resale value very well. I had no complaints about the last three at all. Unfortunately some 'local scum' liked my BRG G reg one more than I did and it was nicked twice and raced around the notorious, at the time, Blackbird Leys Estate. I eventually traded it in for a Montego 2.0 turbo diesel ex demo which was vrtually bomb proof and served me very well for three years. I attach some images of my 4 MG's if they are of any use to your project and as I say I still have a Maestro van which i would be happy to photograph if you require. Yes quite rare to see any these days

Re Montego rear pillars, I'll have a look at ways of doing them, but their narrowness will make them tricky.

 

Richard, I know what you mean about Shapeways delivery times - they've only just shipped a model I ordered in September. On the plus side, they've been very generous with compensatory vouchers.

 

Flood, I definitely hope to have a Maestro van available by April - probably a lot sooner than that.

 

Brush Veteran, thanks for posting the Maestro photos. If you could take some photos of your Maestro van, that would be great - I'd be particularly interested in any of the roof and area above the cab that is different from on the car.

How is the glazing being done on the Maestro?

It might be possible to not do the rear pillars on the Montego saloon, and allow the modeller to "sort" the rear pillars and glass themselves. I know I would accept that as an option.

One of our club members had his BRG G reg one nicked from the carpark outside the St Albans exhibition one year - it made getting his layout home a bit more complicated than it needed to be, and the car was eventually recovered with the covers from the rear suspension towers taken off, and a suitable spanner in the boot, as if it had been nicked to provide new shocks for someone elses motor...

There's a white (Did they come in any other colour?!) Maestro Van that regularly travels up the A22 near Uckfield - I see it most evenings - but that's probably the only one I've seen regularly for several years. Used to be absolutley ubiquitous though, saw them everywhere!

I didn't think anyone outside the UK would ever have bought a Maestro, but following a request via Shapeways I've uploaded an HO version at http://www.shapeways...tro.html?gid=ug .

I bought mine from a garage in Donny who had imported it from Belgium and converted it back to RHD. Even with this extra cost it was cheaper than the list price of a 1.0l Metro. It was only when darkness fell I realised where some work had been 'missed' from the conversion process! At the time this was well known means of offsetting the comparatively high cost of UK cars.

 

I think I still have the What Car road test and BL brochure hidden away somewhere.

As an initial step towards the Maestro van, I have modified the car to represent the version with metal bumpers. These seem to have been a cheaper option, and I think it was this metal-bumpered type which were produced the latest.

To be truly accurate, the front bumper should probably be hanging off at a slight angle, going by most of the photos I have studied.

Here's a render of work on the Maestro van so far.

The rear is still to be done, and it needs quite a bit of tweaking and detailing. Plus there's another type of hubcap to do, as those on the van were different from on either of the cars I've done so far.

The drawings were very useful, many thanks Bernard.

 

I'm not sure about doing a Discovery, as the name is still current so someone is more likely to be concerned about the brand etc.

 

The van is now (hopefully) finished and uploading to Shapeways as I type.

Cough morris marina and morris ital Cough.... if you were to do one I'd have about five.

 

Lovely work on the Maestro van, I'll probably get one and paint it BT Yellow and put the bloke who used to "mend" stuff for my parents landlord when I was younger.... to be prototypically accurate I'll put him dosing off in the front seat!

Why is it that I've stuck with the BMC/Rovers all my life since 1967, and never had the problems that are being reported here? Austin A30, Marina 1.8, Ital 1.3, Rover 827 Sterling(s) and now Rover 75? And when I hve had the inconvenience of having a differen tmake (works vehicle maybe) they have been atrocious? Ford springs to mind here! Maybe its because I've always done my own maintenance?

 

Stewart, I think it's because there are a lot of myths about BMC/Rovers - most of which seem AFAIK from those who've never owned them. And all marques have their problems.

 

My family's had Austins, then Rovers since the fifties with very few problems. Current 'fleet' comprise my two, an MG ZT 190+ and a Rover 620ti and my parents have a 2.5 Rover 75 Conn SE, MG ZS 180 and their little runabout, a 1996, 214i. All maintained by a little garage in Beverley who are MG Rover specialists and all have been looked after.

 

And the subject of thisthread looks very nice indeed :)
