rovex
Just had this emailed from Hornby http://www.Hornby.com/shop/locomotives/steam-locomotives/r3074-gwr-4-6-0-king-class-king-william-iv/?utm_campaign=Hornby_Newsletter_115130_Issue_46&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=CM_hornby Is this a new new model or a rehash of the previous King. £143 seems a lot if its not a new model. Guest dilbert
It's a limited edition issue and not a 'new new' model... dilbert
rovex
Still seems a lot. - Don't think I'll bother - lol
RMweb Premium spamcan61 Posted November 18, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2011 Crikey, that's an awful lot of money for a model that would struggle to be described as 'mid-fi'.
Guest stuartp
Don't forget the posh box and the 'Souvenier Cover' stamps thingy inside. It's part of the Royal Mail Great British Railways Collection which apparently makes it worth an extra 50 quid. I notice even Hattons aren't discounting it (yet). http://www.ehattons.com/35858/Hornby_Model_Railways_R3074_King_Class_4_6_0_King_William_IV_GWR_The_Royal_Mail_Great_British_Railways_Collection_Limited_editi/StockDetail.aspx
brossard
That daylight twixt bogie and smokebox is unacceptable. It can be fixed but really, in this day and age can't Hornby do something better. John
RMweb Premium 7013 Posted November 18, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2011 Yes its the old revamped King from a few years back. The chances of a new one from Hornby judging by what is being written in another thread is minimal
frobisher
Ah, it's one of the Royal Mail special editions that we were getting wound up about last Christmas when they were announced - "not for the likes of us".

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 18, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2011 Crikey, that's an awful lot of money for a model that would struggle to be described as 'mid-fi'. Indeed - it's one which Simon Kohler admitted in a chat with me 'to be less than satisfactory in comparison with our other recent models'. But I suppose any likely purchasers of this should count themselves lucky when they could be in for an ex-Airfix N2 in an 'Olympics' special pack with a couple of teak liveried coaches (not suburbans!) for the princely sum of £204.99 according to Hornby's website - that really is taking the whatsit
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted November 18, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2011 Outrageous price for a model [mould] dating back to the 1970s.
'CHARD
This elaborate piece of marketing of one Curate's Egg wrapped in the Emperor's New Clothes pretty much sums up the debate over on this thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/44833-hornbys-future-is-cheap-toys/page__fromsearch__1

darren01
HI Would have not been so bad if they had this come out in the RR , but to put it out like this ,for that price, sums up one word "OVER PRICED " for what you get here , a box and a bit of paper . oh and a King . craigwelsh
£143 is almost up to the price of a Malcolm Mitchell "King" kit. Still got £80 of wheels, motor/gearbox and a tender to buy though plus it'd probably need a new chassis. Plus £1000 for someone to build it say. Its not quite that bad yet .
