RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 I'll nominate an Eric Bogle song but better-known as performed by the Australian folk band Colcannon (not to be confused with a US band of the same name). Not available on You Tube all I can find is the briefest of iTunes samples which barely showcases the power of the lyric but you do get a moment of Kat Kraus' voice as the song opens and which was reviewed back in 2004 in these terms I have listened to Eric Bogle's "Shelter" performed by a number of artists but even the writer does not give a better rendition than this group. If the unaccompanied voice of Kraus on the opening verse does not bring a tear to your eye, you do not have a heart. http://www.rambles.n...n_stepit99.html Bogle wrote it about a Scot coming to Australia but it can be thought of equally well as a homecoming to Cornwall (in my case) from a life abroad. I make one small change to the lyric: "green and gold" (the Aussie national colours) becomes "black and gold" for Cornwall. The full album "Step It Out" is pretty powerful stuff as well. http://itunes.apple....gov/id310252815 or for those with an iTunes account go to the store, search "Colcannon Shelter" and a 2 minute clip is available on the Step It Out album. RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 Too right. I sometimes describe myself as an anarcho-individualist. Not in a political sense - more a way of life and how I feel comfortable. Some things I care passionately about while others are insignificant. Music brings out the emotion in many of us and can help define who we are. For those of us who perform it can also convey who we are to others. RMweb Premium Torper Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 The album? "Forever Changes", by Love. Came out in 1967 and I bought it then and today it remains as fresh as ever and is still my most played album. One Amazon reviewer summed it up succinctly: "beautiful haunting sweet disturbing colourful insightful unique alluring wise funny dark folk psyche rock. There is nothing quite like this album". It takes me back vividly to the summer of love, but unlike so many albums of that era "Forever Changes" isn't just love and happiness, it's also very much cynical and despairing. It's always with me - it's on my mp3 player, it's in the car, it's just one of the greratest albums ever recorded. The song? Probably "Loch Lomond" by Runrig (when Donnie Munro was still lead singer). If you're Scottish you'll probably understand why; if you're not, you probably won't. RMweb Premium t-b-g Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 Funny how folk have already brought up "The Boss" in this thread yet he also appears in the "what makes me switch off the radio" one too! For me, there are a few but if I had to pick an album it would be Bruce's "Live in Dublin" and my one track would be the long, live version of "The River" as seen on youtube. edcayton
My album-the soundtrack of "American Graffiti" because I love the music and wish I had been part of that scene. My one track is a little different-Pachelbel's Canon in D. I can listen to that for ever. Ed

Free At Last
Free Live. From 1969 when I first heard Free that sound has stayed with me since. I was never a liker of the big cult rock bands, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Yes, Pink Floyd etc., or any American Wall Of Sound rock bands. Free played clean and simple, no effects, no million notes a second widdley widdley guitar, no straight eight bass playing, no thrashing the drums. I remember a gig review from the time saying something like "After the roadies removed several tons of electronic equipment belonging to the support band, all that was left on the stage was two Marshall stacks a basic drum kit and a solitary mic stand, that was all Free needed." Be my Friend being one of my favourites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOr1stg9lds

bluebottle
Pete Seeger once said: "Any darn fool can make something complex; it takes a genius to make something simple.†Buddy Holly's best songs were examples of Rock 'n' Roll at its simplest and best. "Peggy Sue Got Married" was one of the songs he recorded at home shortly before his death; it was later overdubbed for commercial release, but, thankfully, survives in original form. hmrspaul
Until c12 years ago I'd have been with "Free at last" but now it has to be "Mother Nature" by Mostly Autumn. Awesome is stupidly overworked, but the power of this live is simply stunning. It captures the rawness, beauty, calm of the natural world superbly. RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 If I was restricted to one song it would be Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb. Saw them live at Earls Court in the early 90's. The sound, light show and atmosphere were incredible and hearing it again always takes me back. The guitar solo at the end lasts a good 5 mins.....http://youtu.be/jaoH25TaM-c
