Mega Rare...I only have 3 of these! ;)

Yes, it was for a starter set.

Yes, it would go with a Breakdown Crane...but NOT Victorian....more 1960s red...Black before then....

As to "Teak"...they must have seen the LNER version? ;)

I've got one of these for my Dublo crane - mine has buffers but I can't remember if it came with them or I pinched them from something else (plenty of Tri-ang junk lying around)

That is the MKIII, or 3rd version couplings!

No picture of implied box.

Excellent...but worn number! ;)

Pointless quoting the coupling mark (and getting it wrong!) as these only came with the mark III. I assume "only for the serious collector", because only collectors would want the wretched thing.

What is, 'Esso certification service'.

I wondered myself, but presumably it refers to the label/advert attached underneath, which I suspect actually reads "Esso Lubrication Service"

It might just be worth 99p for the Meccano part and the length of Track (Peco fibrebase flexible by the look of it) but not with £2.95 postage on top.

They came without buffers fitted, but the holes were still there for them....so a five minute job, insert spigot into hole , 4 times...;)

Apparently there are also the non brake ends out there...but I have only seen these in one photo in a big book....

The roofs can also vary...non brake roofs do seem to be about...the same with the "Engineers" Black and Green versions, with grey roofs.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heljan-CONTAINER-CRANE-/231088781020?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item35cdf6f6dc : And let battle commence ???? This will be an interesting one to watch, as these have fetched some pretty hefty sales figure in auctions gone by.

And they are off...........

Are Rails just taking the P**s on ebay now, surely somebody has just found 2 spare bits "body & chassis which are an incorrect formation" and thought stick these 2 together "without an interior" and see which "door handle" buys this !!!!

Wow, for 'N' gauge ?  I shall have to tell my Missus that there IS something more expensive than Swiss Metre-gauge in 1/45th scale :jester:

I get the feeling, looking at some of their auctions, that the Rails Vault is really just a skip out the back.

Where do you get 'N' gauge from? And not much of a battle yet, just one bidder so far.

The Price (£147.20) seems rather OTT or am I missing something?

EDIT Maybe I was that one's a bargain!

It's conceivable that it's the same book. I've seen a number of cases where an individual secondhand book has surfaced simultaneously on Ebay and Amazon. Mind you, in the case that immediately springs to mind, it worked in my favour, allowing me to buy an item that was over a hundred quid in one place for just over a tenner in the other. God knows what the seller was up to but I was quite pleased with my purchase.

OTOH, some publications just seem to fetch (or at least be uniformly advertised at) silly money for no readily apparent reason. But then, I buy books to read or to use, not to collect as such, so maybe I'm missing something.

I trust this rather OTT bidding is not from people, who think they are getting a rare original!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-DUBLO-OO-GAUGE-3-RAIL-TYPE-EDL7-LNER-CLASS-N2-0-6-2-SOUTHERN-2594-195-/151158541704?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item2331c04d88

It's not a bad repaint (apart from the skewed transfers - the originals aren't immune from this), but the seller is correct in saying "believed to be a repaint".

(The genuine article should have 'Hornby' in an arc on the smokebox door and large cab windows - this is the BR version EDL17. The chassis should have green wheels, the earlier couplings and a horseshoe magnet.)

Also she doesn't work!

(I've no complaint with the seller, who listed at a perfectly reasonable £4.99 + £3.60.)

David, you've found an item that truly reflects the thread title !!

As most production at Hornby-Dublo went for export, I didn't get mine until about 1952 when the set - track, open wagon, closed van - cost my parents £1 2s 6d ...........
