EBay madness

Can somebody clear this up for me. Why are there too many high priced loco's, coaches, and wagons on eBay. I know that some loco's etc can be rare, but for an example a recent (past 5 years) Hornby HST pack in FGW purple over the £200 pound mark, i just find it quite absurd that it is more than twice the usual price found.

And the lunacy of it is that I saw a Hornby FGW power car pack in a shop last week at normal price.

I've promised to paint an HST pink for my daughter who decided she would like her own train.  I haven't managed to find any Railmatch pink though!

I would suggest acrylics, so that it will come off again!  :)

Could the prices be so high on ebay because of the state of model shops in town centres. After model zone destroyed the toy shop selling trains which will close by x mass and the loss model zone in August we. Will just have Wilkinson in leicester.

Not even collectables are immune from the 'weathering' nonsense.... :O

Why? If anyone wanted a 'West Country' (other than to run in a 'Dublo Preservation' Setting) they'd buy the latest model surely?

A bit OTT:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KEYSERS-KIT-BR-WR-15XX-0-6-0PT-/331057004106?autorefresh=true&pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item4d1488fe4a&nma=true&si=yK%252BzK2Y4Bi6vnvXsp%252FGF%252FpfqOFo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

If the wheels are the original supplied with the kit, then they probably arent very good. I remember it being such a nightmare to try to quarter early wheels supplied with K's kits such as these, that I ended up switching to Romfords instead. The motor isn't much kop too, and you've gotta go to the effort of sorting out Walschaerts valve gear on both sides, and painting/livery. This could end up costing quite a bit in the end in both time and money!

Pity. I could have done with one of those.

Still, there's always a hybrid scratchbuild attempt .....

Why do I get the feeling it'd be worth more unweathered?

... but I can't decide whether this is expensive (for an old Mainline model) or cheap (considering it's Kit Built Repainted Mint Boxed and from our old friend Gostude)...

Interesting that the information below the pic. shows the make as 'Hornby'. As Alice said "Curiouser and curiouser....!"

The description said it was weathered by TMC.  Really?  I don't recall them doing Hornby-Dublo stuff.  And what TMC do weather is to a better standard than this.

``only paint splats on one side and a roof vent missing'' - still wants circa £20 as an opening bid though (with post)!

Has also got a broken iphone for sale!

Must ask the question. Who would want it?

This is quite common among traders who list lots of items. The name Hornby attracts more idle lookers than any other brand name and although one starts with the best of intentions it is very easy to slip up and not change the category when you discover that it makes very little difference anyway.

It does nonetheless leave the seller vulnerable to a 'not as described' rebound.

Someone with the skills to mend it!

Same reason as people buy broken laptops on there. I've bought some of these in the past, but there's not much point looking now - anything which can be economically repaired tends to go for more than I'd be prepared to spend.

Fair enough for electronic items such as iPhones, Laptops, etc. However, I very much doubt you'll be able to return the Maunsell coach in the original posting to anywhere near the condition it left the factory in. Without accepting some marks, or by weathering over it, the side has pretty much had it i'm afraid.

Also, coach vents for Hornby Maunsell's aren't the kind of thing you are going to find lying round in a swapmeet bargain bin any time soon, so i'm not sure why anyone would buy this at the price over a new coach for, say, £3 more (even less in places) from most model shops.

I am beginning to wonder whether this thread is actually an E bay selling tool. When I log onto the 'offending' listing, i get a box come up telling me how many people have looked at it ( or are looking at it ) and these seem to be in the 2 per hour category. That is a pretty high hit rate.

So....plan A. put in a duff or inaccurate listing, attract attention to it on here, wait until there are loads of watchers, then re-list with corrections. Result!!

Why go to the trouble of showing two pictures of the box and none of the item?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OO-GAUGE32-879-Fairburn-Tank-Steam-Locomotive-No-42267-DCC-Ready-ITEM-IS-NEW-/380761683364?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item58a72a35a4

Still, with a username like that it could be appropriate.

To put "New" under Ebay regulations, it must be unopened! ;)

Nor is the Body listing...

Both the same photo...

Wrong one I think! ;)

Looks to be another loco wrecker  spares re-cycler! ;)

Basically it is sheer laziness. it takes a lot of time to unwrap each item, pose it and take a decent photograph, then re-pack it. Anyway you know what is in the box, don't you ?

I would be a lot more suspicious of one bid for £59. the seller is more or less saying 'I want £60 for this'
