EBay madness

I look at this topic from time to time.

Whilst looking at another in eBay Puzzle I spotted this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AEI-Western-Australian-Railway-WAGR-2-DO-2-XA-CLASS-LOCO-NILIGARA-BUILDERS-MODEL/371220446503?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D45731%26meid%3D1568ba44788b49c3a41a70c447717ff3%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D302279804972&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

Worthy of a look for the simple reason that the seller, who has a reputation on here has revealed a bit of his past in the comments.

Fascinating! At the same time another eye watering price for something that can only have value to someone who knew about this model at the time it was built.

That style of c**p ornament seems to be popular though, seen that style in quite a few touristy nick-nack shops; albeit that one is worse than most! Can't see the point of them myself but then horses for courses. Perhaps a market exists out there for failed brass kits, drop them on the floor then add a few extra pop-rivets and bolts and call them collectable souvenirs.

Well, Western Australian antecedents would explain his propensity for putting telephone number prices on broken rubbish and describing stuff fit for the bin as "excellent" or similar.

As for this particular item, 4k seems a bit steep and it's a bit specialist but, if you want one, where will you find another?

True, this is from long before DCC and dead chassis, but contact through the pony pivot isn't very reliable. I was assuming the Romford wheelsets were insulated both sides. however, had I done it, I would have fitted a pickup to both ponies. Even so the price would be way OTT.

EDIT

looking again it appears that there is a metal shorting washer behind the other wheel. Again touch and go contact wise.

I forgot that Triang 3MT ponies have an insulating bush in the pivot so any shorting of the wheel to axle/chassis is pointless. Unless the bush has been removed, of course, in which case the pony will flop about.

To be fair, it is a 'one-off' model and in1:24 scale rather large. However whether anyone else will  think it worth £4k remains to be seen. As to his lengthy waffle on payment/carriage, I would think a trip to Warwick is called for to collect it would be called for.

:offtopic:

Incidentally, My parents lived in Royal Leamington Spa* for years (joined at the hip to Warwick) and a weekend trip was to visit the twin town to look in the Antique dealer's windows. Warwick is full of them all with Gostude's pricing policy.

* BS name I understand because Queen Victoria visited to sample the disgusting spa water at some time. Her statue 'graces' the town. Hitler attempted to relieve us of it during WW II, but was unsuccessful, only managing to shift it a bit.

With the falling £, I'd imagine this one is a bargain to an Aussie collector and I'd imagine it will be winging its way down under, where I could imagine this being quite a conversation piece and probably rightly belongs there.

Is becoming ridiculous?

If the tissue paper adds so much value, then IMHO there are some people who really need to get a life...... Just sayin'

little pricey but then again the Class 110 DMU has been out of production for quite some time now and is still sought after as its not too bad as well as forming the basis for many a Class 104 conversion over the years.

I think that must be the most expensive one to date!   :O  At least it's a Hornby model and not a GBL for once (though the tender is from a Tri-ang Princess I think). It's not badly done (the flaking rust is rather effective), but I suspect the smokebox number plate would be long gone (or am I too pedantic?)
