RMweb Gold McC Posted February 22, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 22, 2012 After some great help in the track planning section, I thought I would move the layout over here as it's officially now a 'layout' rather than a plan Boards have been made for the terminus and yards section at the top of the plan below and track laying has started! The total space is 22 feet across the top, 13 feet down the side. The plan as she stands is 550 feet of track, about 65 crossings / points. Construction will be softwood frame, 9mm ply boards, with the loop boards set 4" lower than the terminus board and using Woodland Scenics 2% inclines to close the gap. I'm also planning to use Woodlands track underlay rolls, strips and sheets. Track will be Peco Code 75 with Electrofrogs, Control will be DCC with DCC accessory decoders controlling via computer control. I'm also hoping to figure out rudimentary signalling and block occupancy detection... Outline will be Irish, with a large stable of A, C, 141, 181, 201 (and soon 071 and 121) as well as a 'preserved through station and motive depot (bottom left) which will be home to the range of steam locos and preserved coaches Operations are planned for extensive passenger with Enterprise, MKIII and MK2 sets, 2600,2700 and 2900 units, as well as the odd visit from NIR sets and locos On the freight side, Ballast workings, pocket and flat container traffic, beets, cement bubbles, cement bogies, keg traffic, timbers... The layout will also 'double job' as a home for my BR Blue / Yellow Faces collection So, a picture tells a better story, so here is the sequence of events so far! And that brings me up to date - track is getting cut and pinned, foam sheet is glued down, next I plan to do some clearance tests, the do all the droppers and glue the track down, then doing the wiring for this section... Thanks for watching!

Hunslet 102
Looking good McC,that is one layout room and space to die for!Track plan looks great with plenty of running area for express trains.Looking forward to seeing your progress with the layout.Sounds like a good mix of motive power, allowing you to run a few different era's. Amiens St to Great Victoria St-we should link up our layouts! Andy
7APT7
Wow McC This looks pretty impressive, what with the length and the size of the whole thing, I'll watch with interest it's progress So PLEASE More Progress Snaps.... RMweb Gold McC Posted February 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2012 Cheers! I'll hopefully finish boards 1 and 2 in terms of tacking down all the track today, then start on the soldering for this section tomorrow!! I'm trying to stay focussed on small sections (12x2.5) at a time, to keep motivation up, and prevent getting overwhelmed by the scale!

RMweb Gold McC Posted February 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2012 Update for February 23rd. Why does everything take so much longer than you would think / expect / hope ? After about three, hours, the track in the MU sidings, running shed, and roads for platforms 1, 2 and 3 are cut and in place. Some stock have escaped from boxed to assist in clearance tests. Tomorrow hopefully will see these boards finished trackside, so I can move on to initial wiring. I've isolated all platform roads and sidings with IRJs so I can later add occupancy detection... Any feedback or comments or warnings, please do let me know! Thanks again for watching!
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2012 For perspective, the distance from the terminus buffers to the curved points in the foreground is just over 12 feet.

RMweb Gold McC Posted February 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2012 hehe, the MKIII's were in a nearer box - I'll dig up the cravens tomorrow to test with their added width
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2012 The plan for tomorrow is finish the track laying, trim the foam to fit, do some initial testing for clearances and running. Then the plan is seal the board underside, before soldering soldering soldering And preparing the points for operation, and drilling all the holes for droppers, feeds and point motors. Maybe next week then I can get the bus installed, and do the under-board soldering!
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 24, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 24, 2012 Small update today, track laying is finished to the edge of the second board and 127 and a cafe/bar mkIII in a pretty poor state have emerged Once I get these two boards wired, I'll have room to access some more stock, and can dig out a few BR blue items
Rammy
What a great looking layout and lots of space too. I wish I had a room like that! Looks like you are making good progress, but I wouldn't be looking forward to all of that soldering. I noticed the iPad in a few of the photos. Have you got some layout software on there or just keeping up to date with RMWeb? Dave
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 24, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 24, 2012 Hi Dave, I'm very lucky with the space - we moved house last summer and the attic was a big draw The soldering is going to be 'fun' :) I think on Monday I'll try and get the droppers done, then Tue/Wed set about modifying all the points, I've a batch of copperclad to replace the sleepers and remove the springs etc ... I use the iPad to keep up to date I use railmodeller.com for the Mac to design, and put the images in hi-res on the pad, so I can refer to the plans easily Thanks for the feedback - I'm a huge fan of Chadwood! Rammy
Thanks for the feedback - I'm a huge fan of Chadwood! Stephen Wow! I didn't think I had done anything good enough to have a fan. Thanks I wish my loft was fitted out like yours and then I would be more inclined to do more on Chadwood. Maybe after First Avenue is completed I will go back to finishing Chadwood. Anyway, enough about me. I'm looking forward to your updates. Dave
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 27, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2012 I'll post an update in a few hours, getting the peco inspection pit installed at the moment and cutting and tinning droppers I've also set up a website at http://amiensstreet.com to provide more details, stock lists, etc. Thanks for all the feedback! RMweb Gold McC Posted February 27, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2012 Today got an inspection pit installed under the running shed, First, the pit is glued together as per peco instructions, and then measured up in place. The Woodland Scenics foam is cut away with a blade and the four corners drilled out with an 8mm wood bit to make room for the jigsaw. Next, cut the slot with the jigsaw (observing safety ) Once done, pop the pit in an ensure a good fit. You might need to trim or file a bit here. Next, remove the web from the back of the track for this section, just cut the web and you can pop the ties off the track for this length, and then slide the remaining web/ties off the track – you’ll need to keep it to re-thread onto the rails in a bit. Now, carefully thread the rail onto the pit, feeding it all the way through, and then thread the rail back on to the end piece of tie / web. And it’s done Doing it this way also means you maintain good electrical connectivity throughout, leading to less stressful running later on
RMweb Gold McC Posted February 27, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2012 45 Droppers cut to length, and some initial soldering tests! I am also soldering the Proses Buffer stops to the adjacent rails, to ensure a good connection, and have started breaking some peco points!
