Western Scottish
Looking good, but can't help thinking Bachmann have missed a trick by not announcing a 3 car one at the same time. At the moment the markets split between 3 Car Hornby and 2 Car Bachmann. With just a little extra investment (they already have a 3 car one in "N") they could have taken the whole market . I've no demand for a 2 car unit but a three car and I'd bite their hand off!

34theletterbetweenB&D
And look at that nice three-arc coach roof profile of what is presumably a grounded vehicle behind the Landy. That's a lovely little modelling cameo altogether, the bridge, signals, bus, steeply rising ground in rear..

I've no demand for a 2 car unit but a three car and I'd bite their hand off! Bachmann appears to be following a common approach to DMU models - first the 108s, then the 105s and now the 101s. Initially produce a 2-car set and confirm there is sufficient interest for the model and only then invest in additional tooling to produce 3-car and/or other 2-car variants. This seems emminently sensible to me, although I too would like a 3-car set. But a 2-car power/trailer set will do fine in the meantime.

ThaneofFife
i can almost feel the warmth of the sun and hear the bird song before the clickety clack of the approaching unit......and a nose full of fumes as it trundles past.

giz
Is it me, or is the second car blue? It does look like it. It was fairly common for the early East Anglian units (both Derby and Met Camm) to have a mix of liveries in their final years.

RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 16, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 16, 2012 Personally a 3 car has no interest for me, they were all 2 car sets in South Tyneside, with some 4 car (some with the buffet IIRC) on the Carlisle services from Newcastle. I can't recall seeing a 3 car oop north, there were power twins I think on the Whitby line though.

I just applied some mathematics to your predicament, and - with some great modelling opportunities thrown in - I reckon two 3-car units are exactly what you require.

Mmm, should have clocked that one myself! can't see the buffet being done though. There used to be one on the KWVR, not sure if they still have it? Could be scanned if they do. Slobber. the penguin of doom
Think the buffet cars were the same body pattern as the trailer cars but with two of the end saloon windows painted green/plated. If memory serves, the window frames were still in situ despite being plated/painted. Cheers. Sean.

RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 21, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2012 Plated by the look of that, no 'Widney' sliding windows. The buffets were out of use by the time I travelled on one on the Carlisle line, but I've had a pint in the KWVR one!!!

RMweb Premium keefer Posted January 3, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2013 pic of blue buffet in 1979: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianews/5808808267/in/set-72157626627223211/ don't know if the buffet would still have been in use by this time. ISTR these were technically cl.111? looks like a bit of a scratch set, possibly with a cl.122 substituting for a 101 DMS
