Kirkby Luneside (Original): End of the line....

Recommended Posts

Hi Jeff,

I do envy you, almost all your track laying done and I'm still faffing with that bleeding Templot!!! I got better results today with a bit of chalk on the concrete floor, at least I could see if it all fitted - erm!!

I'm totally with you on the prototype -v- fictional debate but the constraints of space has always scuppered my grandiose schemes and I ended up with what worked for me at the time.

I'm going to have a clear out tomorrow and ebay a load of non-Dent material so again no modelling getting done, I need the rest before I start back at work on Monday.

Jeff, if you want copies of the Jenkinson articles just ask.

Cheers

Mike

I can across these in myTransport Diversions news letter.  The first I thought was a reduced rate book but is in fact a calender.  I thought you might be interested as it is a picture of an S&C Viaduct.  They were obviously not as good viaduct builders as you as it is straight!      http://www.transportdiversions.com/publicationshow.asp?pubid=9207

The second is a book which has just been published about the West Coast line.  It appears to be full of WTT and more interestingly coach movement diagrams, i.e. what coaches were on what trains and where they went.  I know it is not S&C but it may have something intersting in it but they may also do ones later, if they have not done so already for the S&C

http://www.transportdiversions.com/publicationshow.asp?pubid=9273

Looking at it again it was just published in December but is out of stock.  I assume they have not come in yet.  Also there is a link to others in the series, including one for the midlands.

There is nothing so complicated on my railway.  4 or perhaps 6, four wheel coaches go up the line, and then come back again. The joys of narrow gauge. :sungum:

Evening Mike.

The track is almost down - though it's taken me nearly 3 months! Nearly 40 turnouts, each with Cobalts and all the soldering/droppers etc has been a fair job! But it looks pretty reasonable.

I've sent you a PM re. the trackplan etc.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the calendar info etc. Not sure - someone will confirm/correct me - but I think the "straight" viaduct on the cover picture is Arten Gill. 11 arches, impressive!

You can always build a OO layout, if you're so inclined!

That's not bad going though is it. Once I get my new shed later in the year I will have to look at getting all mine down and it will take me a lot longer than that mainly through a limited budget that will have been blown on the shed itself. I think it will take me a couple of years to catch up to where you are now, still I've got my little BLT to keep me going whilst dreaming about the rest. :)

Cheers Jim. I can't really complain, can I? If you go back to page 5 (!!!!!) of the thread - WAY back in June 2012, I'd just started building the subframe! I planned to phase the tracklaying in, but I've got totally carried away. I seriously think I must be crazy.

Anyway, if I wanted to "have a break" for a couple of months, the "scratchbuilding club" has got me addicted! If you're interested, have a look at the 2 15 minute videos that George has posted yesterday/today on Trebudoc/Abbot's Mead. Quite superb!

I do hope you get your decorating done and get the chance to carry on with that masterpiece of a shed you're building. Please DO keep reminding me that I'm working relatively fast - if not quite in Larry Goddard's league!

You're not doing so bad Jeff. I've got 22 coaches to build this month, so I look in on this thread occasionally but you seemed to have taken a break...

Nice to hear from you Larry! Happy New Year!!

Only 22 coaches? Blimey, I wouldn't know how to build one!

I had a break over Christmas, but things are picking up now. Track almost all down, then it's electrical testing time.... However, as I mentioned in my post to Jim, I'd like to spend some time in the spring building a couple more tunnel mouths and the main station building.

Please post a few coach photos if you get the chance.

Hi Polly.

So you've been sat on your backside? good for you! You're always doing something, so you can justify a break. And some coffee!

Interesting comment about the point motors. One of the reasons I built a strong subframe and then added risers was to keep the point motors, and other electrics, away from any cross-members. It's inevitable that, with acres of space, the tiebar/point-motor position will lie atop a joist!!

Have fun with your laptop!!  :nono:

Going to be even busier - I picked up Through the Links at Southall and Old Oak Common today...er...yesterday, says she looking at the clock  smiley_to_sleep049.gifso a bit of reading to do and maybe try out the lamp on my cushioned workstation.  to_read_a_book.gif    :D

Yes, reading is a splendid pastime. If I'm not modelling I seem to be reading. Though I've got some visitors tomorrow, so I'll have to tidy the house a little!

I'm currently reading a book about Star Formation in Galactic Nebulae. Astronomy - my other obsession.

Enjoy!

Hi Jeff, I didn't get chance to look last night but I have just had a catch up and it appears that everyone is laying track, wiring Cobolts or building coaches, I feel a bit left out but I am enjoying this thread more than eve,r with all the input from all around the country and in some cases even the WORLD. I have a busy day today, I am having Mum for lunch, (hope she tastes ok) so I will be back on tonight and will probably have another page or two to read, brilliant mate keep it all coming, it is very interesting.

al the best, Andy.

I'll take your word for it, Mike. Relevant to your neck of the woods, so something I'm not "in the know" about.

I hope you're recovered after the Christmas business. Nice to see you on here again. I'll have to find something to keep you entertained!

Morning Andy,

I had a VERY late night (4ish) and consequently I've done nothing so far today - yet.

Into the bunker shortly. I'll post a couple of photos tomorrow showing the trackwork I've added over the last couple of days. It's not exciting, but I know you enjoy looking at it.

Hope you have a lovely time with your mum.

Hi all

Spent a frustrating couple of hours yesterday trying to wire the turntable up, can someone explain why a TT that was working perfectly when I took it out a couple of years ago and has been stored in its box, when I wired it yesterday absolutly defied all attempts to make it work and yet when I came in from church and went upstairs I had it revolving under its own power within 5 mins!!!!

Anyway you asked for a photo

Good looking turntable, Ian. Good to see it being used - it'd be a shame if you had a piece of kit like that and didn't employ it in your layout.

Now, the next hole - or whatever - you make, photograph it and let's have a look. It's always fun to see threads showing development. Things may go slowly, but looking back after a few months it's surprising what we get done!

Sorry it's taken a while to reply...

This afternoon has been one of those spells that could set you cursing but, in the end, hasn't!!

Basically, I've ended-up ripping-up 3 hours work. As I was checking the tracklaying, I had a brainwave on how to make that section of the fiddle yard more effective. So I'll be back in the bunker tomorrow morning to put my modified ideas in place. Since the new idea is a lot better than what I had, I don't mind!

I have to come out of "hermit" mode and socialise now - hence the curtailment of railway activity for today. Won't stop me sneaking off and posting on here, though!

Hi mate, Just taken mum home and so will do a bit tonight, I HOPE.

It is always BOTH frustrating and good when you get a new idea and feel that all the work done NEEDS to be ripped up and start again. I am sure that if in the long term it will as you say make the fiddle yard more effective then it has to be a good decision, so well done for noticing it before it was too late.

I will play another game of CATCH UP again later tonight.

Andy.

Hi Andy.

I'd fixed 2 turnouts and 3 pieces of straight track in position. All lined up etc - was quite pleased with myself. Then I thought of a way to keep 2 full trains (coaches or wagons) in the branch section of the fiddle yard while the branch service operates. It meant moving the position of a crossover by around a metre - so up came the track before the PVA had even had time to think about setting.

The surprising thing is that, because it's an improved version and something different, I'm looking forward to re-doing it. Nothing worse than ripping-up and replacing the same old thing. I think that's what kept Larry sane on Greenfield. Each time he ripped the track up he felt he was making an improvement.

I have to get this set-up to my satisfaction because once the hillside goes over the top of it, it's going to be difficult to change. Sorry - no pics. Soon!!!

Hi Jeff

Those brainwaves can be a nuisance sometimes can't they, they eat into our modelling time but as long as the end result is satisfying all is well. Some of mine just get me into trouble and I have to have a couple more to get out of it :scratchhead:

As for Georges videos, yes I have seen those and they are very instructive and it makes one tempted to build in ply, something I've not done yet.

Decorating starts tomorrow and I have permission to attend the open day at Stafford, I must have been good  Right I'd better see if I can get a bit more done to the 'masterpiece', I'm definitely doing something easier next.

Hi Jeff,

Track laying and track lifting at the same time, you'll be giving BEECHING a good name! If it makes sense go for it as I am with my viaduct.

Cheers

Mike

Good to hear about the viaduct. And yes, it makes sense. Only annoying thing is that I thought I'd considered what I was doing. The change is oh, so simple - and I should have got it right first time!

I think the S&C is acquiring a pretty good profile on here these days!
