New OO gauge Class 73

  • 3 weeks later...

Dapol show them as "released" in August, but Hatton's progress chart shows them as still at pre-production stage. No-one seems to be showing them as "for sale" in stock or imminent delivery for sure. But then, this is exactly what happened with the Hornby Blue/Grey 4 VEP - Hornby kept saying they were on the way, no-one advertised them as imminent, and suddenly they were sold out, until Hattons obtained millions (perhaps I exaggerate a little) at Arthur Daly prices and knocked them out for about half price, but sold out within weeks. Be vigilant everyone - I only pre-ordered one to see if they were so much better than the Lima ones that I should replace my entire fleet but now fear I may get VEP'd.....why is this hobby so stressful now?

I waited patiently for this from announcement right up until last month and then changed scale and continent. Sorry Dapol... I'm not particularly impatient but I much prefer the old days when something was announced and then it simply arrived in the shops a short time later. "Pre-orders", "crowd funding", "announcements years in advance of production" etc etc... nope, not for me. Humbug.

I have just bought a Hornby (ex Lima but better motor) one to repaint into Southern livery. back to old school modelling as I will add the detail myself.

Still waiting for the N scale Gaugemaster exclusive ones ordered over a year ago.

There seems to be something going on with the BR typeface used for the numbers - they seem a bit big and squashed. Now it has been helpfully pointed out by someone on a model railway forum, I'm sure it will be rectified before production :)

When I first saw the images on Gaugemaster's email this afternoon I asked myself why a class 73 in BR blue should have a high intensity headlight? The only answer that came to mind was that this particular loco had been repainted into BR blue later in its life. This contradicts with its reincarnation first as 73205 and then as 73962 (Source: Wikipedia).

That's resolved the headlight issue then and the Intercity one doesn't have one, as per the prototype!

There was mention in the Rail Express Modeller that pictured the blue one that the numbers would be altered as they were wrong, so they might be different on the final models if these are pre-production ones.

There's possibly been an error in the instructions at the factory for 73124 and 73138; the former shouldn't have a headlight and the latter should.

Was going to get 124 but looks to have a headlight and numbers a bit big. Like the inter city one now tho !!

73135 should also be available in BR blue, but there's no picture yet:

Nevermind the over large numbers on 73 102, surely the livery application is fundamentally wrong?? Look at the position of the nameplate and BR logo? Am I missing something?

Apart from the livery and headlamp issue's, this 73 just doesn't look right to me. Think I'll be keeping hold of my old Lima versions (remotored) for some time !!!

Oh dear, you're right.  As these are supposed to be pre-production models (post #384 above), let's hope the error was caught.  Otherwise it's Dutch and Large Logo versions for me at the moment.

It could be the photos on the Kernow site; they do look better in the Gaugemaster pictures, less "squashed" perhaps.

Not to mention:

1) Size and positioning of red/white stripes (too high and red should be wider than white - not equal sized)

2) Warning panel is wrong yellow (they've used an early and it should be late)

3) Lower warning panel should be higher: flush with the bottom of the side window. This would then highlight the handrails properly: there is not enough yellow showing above the horizontal handrails.

Fully agree with this comment.  There's something not quite right about it.  I had plans to sell all my 73's and replace them with Dapol ones but I think I am going to have a good look at them before making a decision.

Calm down people.......

These are "Pre-production Models" with a paint job.

It has already been stated that Dapol are aware of the issues with typeface and it will be corrected on the models that hit the shops.

I would hope that they would also be aware of the correct livery specifications and have compared them very carefully with published images and informed their production people about the errors.

When they hit the shops and they're painted bright orange and have LMS emblazoned across them, then you can complain.

But until then............
