georgeT
Morning John, Thanks for the kind words, l really enjoy the challenge of building the cheaper end kits and l get a big buzz out of tuning a few brass etches into a loco, and then adding extra details to them, l look at tons of photos of the loco l am building and then take various bits from them all and make a loco right or wrong. l have been into O gauge on and off for over five years now and have built about twelve locos all together then on a whim l sold them all (big mistake) and went back to OO selling all my O gauge to finance the venture, but l soon found out that l missed the challenge of building locos, so then l decided to return to O gauge, the first thing l bought (as a few of us did) was the Dapol 08 and a few wagon kits and then l was hooked again. l really don't think O gauge that expensive, the J94 kit cost £115 then £60 for the wheels and then £45 for the motor, that's £220 all in, and then the challenge of construction, however long it takes, or you could buy a Hornby OO West Country (sound) loco for £245 and have no say in the building. georgeT
Thanks Andy thats correct you can add whatever you want as its the only one in the world, as l said before l add as much detail as l want, to me if it looks good then that will do, Started to prime the J94s chassis giving it a coat of red primer, also l have made some inside motion bits and pieces all totally non descript and crude, but it gives the impression of something between the frames, better that none at all, you cant tell the difference when under the loco....
georgeT
Gave the loco a really good clean before her grey primer and fitting a wooden floor...

Regards I've only been in the 0 gauge game for a few months and having a great time. I can't imagine going back to 00. I agree that, because we don't acquire as much stock as 00, it works out less expensive. I do enjoy building kits and even have a second hand Slaters 1F on the to do shelf. Trying telling that to my kit drawers - I have kit's for 29 locos plus in excess of 150 wagon kits - Gulp!

georgeT
Hi John, l built a slaters 1f a few years back and l found it hard work but then l was just starting in O gauge myself, but it was a good learning curve lovely little loco, l have painted the chassis on the J94 and fitted the plunger pick-ups and it runs very nicely, will fit all the gear to the chassis next

Cheers, Peter Thanks Peter, l really love the plunger type pick-ups from ( Premier Components) and they are fitted to all my builds from now on, so much neater than other options...
georgeT
Had a closer look at my Bulleid 0-6-0 Q1 one this morning and l glad l did underneath the card was a load of very tarnished frets which contain the boiler / tender and a host of other parts it looks like there were two kits thrown together so a quick bath of boiling water and a clean with Bar keepers friend they have come up like new, the big problem l have is there are no instruction for any of them ? so l am stuck with loads of research to do......
EKR
Exactly what I do. Put the frets on the shower tray and spray them with Barkeepers. Leave for a few minutes then wash clean. Come up like new.
brossard
Another loco kit!!!??? Good heavens you are on a roll. Despite it's looks that only a mother could love I quite like the Q1. John
georgeT
Spot on John, But l thought they were lovely Hahahaha there was something big and powerful about them we used to go train spotting at Waterloo in the early 60s a lot were we saw all the W/C B/B and the M/N but the ones l loved most of all were the dirty Q1s pushing empty stock in and out of the station, also we would stop off at Guildford sometimes where you would see two or three on shed there, happy days....
brossard
Happy days indeed. I can just remember steam locos on the L&Y line behind the house in the early 60s. John
georgeT
l thought l could make a decent model out of two part crap kits but l was wrong, wish l had kept hold of my £50 quid now ? Hahahahaha

Andrew P
Looks good mate, but like Charlie K said, all kits are just an aid to scratch building. Keep it going mate
georgeT
Hello Andy, Just had a bad day yesterday nothing went right, we all have one of those days once in a while, anyway having a break from the J94 and spending time on the Q1, no steps so l have had to make them myself, now the front end is starting to look the part ?...
brossard
As Andy said, kits are aids to scratchbuilding. It is satisfying to make missing parts. The Q1 is looking very good. John
