Mayshill - GWR

Hello!

Thanks for the likes and comments, apologies for not responding earlier, but Christmas got in the way, as did getting our wedding sorted!

I have found a bit of time here and there to do a bit of work on Mayshill, and also operate whenever possible.

The latest minor update is to the dairy area.  I have added another low building to the left of the main building.  This was a building on a previous layout that had a wooden exterior. To match the rest of the dairy, I re-clad it with brick plasticard (not sure of the  make, might be SE Finecast), added barge boards, gutting and downpipe.

I haven't yet decided whether to have the additional small 'hut' in front on the new building or not.  I think both brick buildings need a few roof vents/pipes.

Another pic:

The next are that I would like to attend to is around the barn.

This was sort of just dumped here! I think I will create a small yard, with a stables etc.  That's the plan - not sure when it will happen!

Cheers

Jules

Another post!

Just a few shots of a couple of locos/trains.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned I had picked up a 4575 prairie and renumbered it as 4588, well here are a couple of pics:

I removed the G W R and replaced it with Great Western, the first attempt on this tank had the whole name slightly sloping down, I re-did it in the week, and I'm still not convinced the 'Western' is quite level.

Hi Tony, thanks for the comment and suggestion.

I probably  should have mentioned that the works are not quite finished yet!  I have planned either a bush or a tree to hide the join, but I need to add a vent or two to the building before fixing in place.

Nice to see some more shots Jules, and you can never have too many Prairies. If the Western of Great Western is on the slop, I can't tell from the picture. I looked a few times. I do like the shot of her sat with the very nicely weathered roof of the B set behind.

Jules,

I do like it.  The barn looks so much better with company.  I always like the fact that as you go through the countrysid you see these types of encloures, usually farm house, barn etc.

One question, can the horses get to the field behind it or is that only accessed from the other side?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment and 'likes'.

Currently there is no access from the yard into the field.  I did want to put a gate in, but when trying to arrange the buildings I was running out of space to fit it all in, so ended up with this arrangement.  Possibly not ideal, but I think it is an improvement anyway.

The daily milk train approaches Mayshill, passing over the level crossing and the farm

The brake van is then placed in the headshunt (there is a missing picture - removing it from the end of the tanks)

The two milk tanks that have already been picked up from a previous location on the branch are removed and attached to the brake van in the headshunt

Well another four and a bit months have flown by...

Activity on Mayshill has mainly consisted of operation (or playing trains!) when time permits.

I have had time to add another two wagons to the fleet.  The first is an MR 10/12 ton van (D664) from Cambrian models.  A very easy kit to put together. Just need to finish off numbering/lettering it.

The second addition is an update to the old Hornby box van, which I believe is based on a H&B railway van.  It is not wholly accurate...the underframe was again from Cambrian (RCH standard I think) so the brake gear is wrong if nothing else. I did had some spare LNER style brake hangers (the bits the brake blocks attach to), so substituted those for the kit ones.  I also replaced the roof vents with white metal ones.  I am tempted to do another one of these, but get the underframe details a bit more prototypical second time around.

I've always dismissed these Hornby vans as toylike, but you've shown what can be done with them!

Hi Jules

Good to see another update. The vans look good, I wonder if many of the MR ones lasted until the late fifties? If so maybe I need to get one!

Regards

Les

Hi Les,

According to the instructions, they lasted 'until the 1950s' for freight. It also says that they may have lasted in departmental service upto the 1970s.

So I'm sure you could justify one in some form!

Hi Jules, Just catching up and looking back it's been ages since I last did a like or passed comment. It's really come on well since I last looked so well done and more pics please.:good:

Thanks Andy,

I'll try to post more pictures!  My excuse is the room is north facing so getting suitable light is tricky!

Congratulations on the 10 years Jules, glad you're still updating.

It's strange to think how these threads persist over quite a long time, while all sorts of things happen in our lives. The internet is odd, on the one had it's very "now" and "in the moment", on the other hand it stores stuff forever!

Hi Jules

Well done on ten years!

it was eight years ago that seeing your layout encouraged me to start my own thread!

Nice to see the latest additions to the wagon fleet as ever, that Mink looks lovely.

Best wishes

Les
