1977joey
The canopy looks brilliant so far Mark, I really like the curved roof, adds a lot of character i think. Graham. Thanks Graham, glad you like it . I'm going to add a little more detail to the top of the canopy & fake flourescent lights below to make it more realistic. That curved canopy is really good. Thanks Gloucester Road, glad you like it Superb work right there. I am sure that canopy, if it were real, would be listed! Thanks Stephen, as in my reply to Graham, I need to add more detail to the top of the canopy as well as underneath to bring it more to life I'm hoping to get the canopies constructed for the bay platforms over the next couple of days too Good to see your going again after your set back. Why is it your 6' looks so much bigger that the 6' of my layout. Carl Hi Carl, glad you like it. I'm not sure how it looks that much bigger unless it's the angle i've taken the pictures. I did add an extra 6" to the board & in N guage that does make all the difference. I did this so as my HST, 2 power cars + 6 Mark 3's could fit properly into Platform 1, as it just didn't look right before, so the layout length is now 6' 6". Hope this helps All the best, Mark
1977joey
Hi Guys, Well another breif update....the canopies over the bays I have been dreading making because of the shape & wondering how to go about it. I managed to snap the 1st one then gave up. I've finally constructed one of them now from clear plasticard glued to thick white card scored & bent to shape. This is how it looks at the moment...it still needs to be properly fixed in place, the end of it properly detailed & painted. This canopy will be painted black between platforms 1 & 2 and the one to be constructed between platforms 3 & 4 will be a buff colour. I remember Shrewsbury in the 80's & the colours wern't matched up. Cheers for now guys Mark

Thankyou Oli, glad you like it Hey looking good! Totally chickenned out of making canopies but yours are ace What are you planning behing the station? Cheers Simon Thankyou Simon , i've done the second canopy today & have tidied up the ends so am happy with them now. Behind the station platforms & carriage sidings, i'm going to construct a raft from polystyrene to hide the storage sidings. This is where the main station entrance building will be as well as a few high street shops. All the best, Mark
1977joey
Well guys, I'm on a bit of a roll with the station now, managing to get both bay platform canopies constructed. I've detailed the ends of them so they look a lot better now, so all they need is to be glued into place and painted, especially the supports. Here's the pictures of how it looks this evening.... Cheers for now guys Mark

1977joey
Looks amazing Mark, really enjoying the progress you are making. Cheers Scott, glad you like it Well some more work been going on to the layout. This time concentrating on the area behind the station. I've built up the raft from thick card & used remaining card from the platform kits to construct the roadways. The station building needs attention as it used to be the front of a terminus on the old layout. A footbridge between the main station building & the platforms is yet to be constructed. Here are the pictures... This picture showing the brick paper now added round the card.... This picture showing what will become a road bridge at the north end of the station Cheers for now guys, Mark
1977joey
Evening Guys, Well as I have this bad lurgy thats going round & have had to leave going into work, it's given me chance if nothing else to get on with the layout. Today I've got to paint a lot of the board to mark out where scatter, ballast, roads & the river are going to be situated. The Shawbury 'Abbey' which stands prominent overlooking the layout is already on a papier mache/polystyrene mound, which is removable & from the previous layout. I still want to do more to this. The following pictures show how far i've got today. Where the river situated (made from tin foil), i have a way of making an illusion of the railway going over it, without the need to saw through the baseboard. Here are the pictures of the latest progress.... Cheers for now, Mark
Marcyg
Love it If you squint really hard, it kinda reminds me of the old Rugby layout
shanks522
coming along very nicely Mark, Especially like the picture of the 37 taken through the platform with the canopy's etc, will look fantastic with ballast etc. Cheers Graham.
1977joey
Love it If you squint really hard, it kinda reminds me of the old Rugby layout Thankyou Marcyg, Do you have a link for the old Rugby layout that you've mentioned? I'd love to see this All the best, Mark
1977joey
coming along very nicely Mark, Especially like the picture of the 37 taken through the platform with the canopy's etc, will look fantastic with ballast etc. Cheers Graham. Thanks Graham, Glad you like it I'm hoping to get more work done today, especially filling in the sides of the roadways (that are currently in mid air ) & the walkways between the platforms & sidings. May get some more pictures posted this evening depending how much work i've done All the best, Mark
1977joey
Evening Chaps, I've been working on the layout all afternoon (I love being on a roll ), doing a really messy job. Making papier mache isn't one of the nicest of jobs on a layout, but it is effective once its dry & scatter & lichen is added. I've made a road bridge over the river & also filled in the roadway from the upper level down to the lower level of the layout. I've also added the walkways to the carriage sidings & also from platforms 3 & 4 to Shawbury Foregate No1 signal box. Here are the latest pictures taken a few minutes ago while we still have daylight.... This picture showing the road bridge i've made going over the river severn This picture showing the road between the upper & lower levels now filled in Here can be seen the walkways added from the north end of the platforms to the carriage sidings This picture showing the papier mache now painted ready for scatter to be added the walkways added from platforms 3 & 4 to Shawbury Foregate No1 signal box Cheers for now guys, Mark

1977joey
excellent, it's really coming along now Thanks Martin well Guys, this post on Shawbury will be my last one for a few days now as i'm back to work tomorrow. Today i've finished with the scatter & also managed to make the road from the upper to the lower level look more realistic & not looking so much 'in mid air'. I've added fencing in front of the terraced houses below the abbey & managed to add the girder bridge over the river, this actually is just in place in front of the road bridge, but it gives the minds eye the impression of the railway running over it. My next jobs are to sort out the rear of the main station frontage building, & also to add a footbridge between it & the platforms. The track is also now ready for the dreaded ballasting Here are the pictures from this evening.... This picture shows i've added extra spacers between the platform canopy pains of glass, this makes it look more realistic for me This view can be seen new walls & fencing added next to the roadways & the girder bridge over the river A closer view of the girder bridge over the river. As its so close to the road bridge it tricks the eye into thinking the railway is actually going over the river too, where as it's actually all on the flat. Cheers for now guys, Mark
1977joey
Hi Guys, I've managed to get work done to the main station frontage building & a start on the stairs for the footbridge to connect the platforms with the main building. This is a steady progress, though although i'm working early shifts....I find it hard to get into 'modelling mode' when home after work . I've spent a couple of hours on it tonight....here are the results of the latest progress... The station front which was rescued from the old layout (origionaly a terminus). I've added an '80's style' extension to the left hand side The building in place on the layout, the rear of it now completley rebuilt. The large space between the windows is where the over bridge to the platforms will connect to it Construction of the staircase to the over bridge begins How the stairs will look on the platforms. Lift shafts will be added behind too. Cheers for now guys, Mark
Removed a/c
Great job of re-purposing the original terminus building Mark. I like how the fascia is different on the front and back.
Gloucester Road
That really does look good; i too like the different textures. Back to the previous post that bridge over the "flat" river really is effective, nice simple that really does fool the eye.
1977joey
Great job of re-purposing the original terminus building Mark. I like how the fascia is different on the front and back. That really does look good; i too like the different textures. Back to the previous post that bridge over the "flat" river really is effective, nice simple that really does fool the eye. Thanks Scott & Gloucester Road, glad you like it. I'm going to edge the roof with coping stones on the '80's' extension to set it off & make it blend in better Well guys, some more progress made today, thats the overbridge between the platforms & the main station building. I've done the stairs in 2 halves, this has saved me cutting away any canopy . One haf underneath it & the other half over. Here's the pictures of how it looks..... Construction of the bridge made from thick white card & clear styrene/plasticard... The bridge in place on the station How it looks under the canopy. I'm yet to add the lift doors to the platform building behind the stairs A view of the whole station with the bridge in place. The next on the 'to do' list is ballasting Cheers for now guys... 1977joey
Wow, that bridge over to the platforms looks like a great spotting location. Thanks Stephen I'm glad i went for the glazed effect now as originally I was going to make it solid. I'm really pleased with the effect All the best, Mark
1977joey
Evening Chaps, Well amidst the noise of fireworks, i've managed to get work done to Shawbury this evening, as well as bits over the last week when i've felt motivated. I have almost completed the ballasting on all the main running lines, carriage sidings & bay platforms. I'd run out just before doing the 2 stabling sidings at the far side of the station, tho I want to mix a little green scatter with the ballast when I get round to these sidings. I've also added Non-working flourecent lighting effect under the canopies to add more realism. I've done this by cutting up white cotton buds & sticking them to thin strips of card underneath, it looks pretty good I think Here's some pictures of the progress over this week.... View of the layout with ballast now laid making the fake flourecent lights for the station canopy how they look added onto the structure.. more shots of the station now with the ballast dry & track cleaned . My next on the 'to do' list for the station is print off the signage, nameboards & add the clocks & screens. Watch this space Cheers for now guys, Mark
1977joey
Evening Guys. Some more progress to report on the station. I've printed out all the signage for the platforms on thick card & also the station clocks. These were actually from a picture of the real original BR clocks at Shrewsbury before the LED one's came in. I cut & pasted the clock out of the picture, resized it & printed off a few copies. I then glued 2 faces back to back, superglued them to track pins & then glued to the canopy & i'm really pleased with how they look . Platform lamps (None Working) have also been added as well as flower beds to the uncovered parts of the platforms. Here are the latest pictures.... The signs for the station printed off & being cut out The clocks.... How they look in place under the canopy Lamps added to the uncovered parts of the platforms & flower beds. You can see my hand made signals which need to be properly detailed before putting into place A shot of a class 31 hauled parcels service with the clock visable just above the loco. I'm yet to add the platform numbers & 'Shawbury' nameboards, which I will do once the canopies & supports over the bay platforms have been painted. Cheers for now guys, Mark
Gloucester Road
Those signs look really good, clocks are great too. Wouldnt have thought to do that , well done.
